I love a bit of organ-thunder and the sheer power of this piece is just amazing.

I remember wandering through Whiteley’s shopping centre in London – the “Muzak” was the 1812 overture. As the place was almost empty it filled the huge space. Thrilling.
King Crimson (1980s version that James Blast detests).
This still sounds like the future to me, over 30 years later.

Only just finding time to wallow in last year’s retro release.
This is a 1970s amateur cabaret duo who recorded an Elton John medley for a privately-issued album. Don’t laugh: it’s not camp, but extraordinarily intense and uncanny, like some avant-garde project on ESP records. I heard it on an compilation of obscure private pressings , and someone else has donated it to Youtube.
A synthimesizer with soul. I remember hearing this for the first time and thinking “it’s the future”.
Now it just sounds like everyday music from Blake’s Seven.

Sigur Rós specialise in extraordinary music. This one’s called Glósóli and is one of their less dramatic pieces.

This is extraordinary, though maybe not in the way you meant. It’s from an Irish-French duo that a friend of mine saw in a pub around Galway somewhere. Then there is something that sounds extraordinary to one world, yet as normal as hell to another. Maybe if you’re from Brittany, this sounds like elevator music. Maybe.
