A friend sent me this, which has apparently been going viral on twitter (or some other social media platform)…
If this has embedded correctly, it should be the Lana Del Rey version of this meme as and example.
So as a little fun for the weekend, pick your artist, select your albums and then let the arguments begin…..

Jonathan Richman/Modern Lovers
Divides the fandom – Surrender to Jonathan
Greatest of all time – Rockin’ and Romance
Locals favourite – The Modern Lovers
Mental Breakdown – I’m So Confused
The one everyone forgets – It’s Time for Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers
Either love or hate – Jonathan Goes Country
Fan favourite – I, Jonathan
Overlooked masterpiece – You Must Ask the Heart
I’d probably have nominated Rockin’ and Romance for most of the categories but thought I’d mix it up a bit.
Superb and faultless
Thank you @tiggerlion It’s my chosen specialised subject. I gave it some thought.
It shows. Well done
Just tried a Paul Weller version. Many choices for each category, just honing them down.
For “Mental Breakdown” though, pretty sure my choice is Heliocentric – never got what was going on there.
Although considering his whole career, that award probably goes to Style Council’s last (unreleased at the time) album Modernism: A New Decade.
He was either in another world at the time (did he really believe it would restore Style Council’s waning popularity?), or just seeing how much he could p*ss Polydor off
Kate Bush:
Which divides the fandom – The Red Shoes
Greatest Album of All Time – Hounds of Love
Locals favourite – Aerial
Mental breakdown – The Dreaming
the one everyone forgets about – 50 Words for Snow
Either you love it or you hate it – Never For Ever
Fan Favourite – going to go with Lionheart here over the first album
Overlooked masterpiece – The Sensual World
Someone on the Twitter thread explains ‘locals’ as the more casual/civilian fan, so I wouldn’t think Aerial would fit the definition in this case…more likely The Whole Story.
And I think Kate and the fandom cognoscenti would argue that The Dreaming is when she was able to really allow her creativity to flourish with no filter.
That was what I assumed for my Thommo Local’s Choice below, ‘the one with VBl1952 on it.’
Agree with most of that but would have Whole Story as Locals favourite and Aerial as Fans favourite
I don’t think this can be applied to Steely Dan, which I believe is interesting in itself.
There are poor misguided types who don’t like any of their music & there is fierce debating among the faithful of what is their best. But, looked at overall, all the albums are considered excellent. Pretty unusual.
FWIW, I like Lana Del Ray which prompts such withering eye rolling pity from my 2 daughters ( of the ‘old fart trying to moderately up to date’ variety) it has to be seen to be believed.
I could have Gaucho in every category.
That is an *excellent* point, well made!
Easy:
Divides the fandom – Two Against Nature
Greatest of all time – Aja
Locals favourite – Pretzel Logic
Mental Breakdown – Gaucho
The one everyone forgets – Katy Lied
Either love or hate – Everything Must Go
Fan favourite – Countdown To Ecstasy
Overlooked masterpiece – The Royal Scam
Hmm. Your confidence was your undoing, Tig. Here’s the right list:
Divides the fandom – Gaucho
Greatest of all time – Countdown To Ecstasy
Locals favourite – Can’t Buy A Thrill
Mental Breakdown – Everything Must Go
The one everyone forgets – Live Album – can’t even remember the title
Either love or hate – Katy Lied
Fan favourite – Pretzel Logic
Overlooked masterpiece – 2VN
You might have a point about Can’t Buy A Thrill.
This dovetails quite well with my choice and we can therefore consider it done. Next!
Can’t fault that HP. I love Katy
Three against one is not fair.
*stamps little foot*
I maintain it can’t be done, but if gun to head the correct list is:
Divides the fan base-Everything Must Go
Greatest of All Time- Aja
Locals favourite-Katy Lied
Mental Breakdown – Gaucho
The one everyone forgets- Can’t Buy A Thrill
Either Love Or Hate- Two Versus Nature
Fan Favourite- Pretzel Logic
Overlooked masterpiece- Alive In America
Let’s try the Richard (and in some cases Linda) Thompson version
Which divides the fandom – Henry the Human Fly
Greatest Album of All Time – Shoot Out the Lights
Local’s favourite – Rumor and Sigh
Mental breakdown – 13 Rivers
the one everyone forgets about – Across a Crowded Room
Either you love it or you hate it – Front Parlor Ballads
Fan Favourite – Mock Tudor
Overlooked masterpiece – Pour Down Like Silver
Across a crowded room is bloody brilliant – Mock Tudor would be high up my list just for Walking the long miles home. But top has to be Bright Lights for me. Don’t much care for Front Parlour ballads and Amnesia is the one most people forget lol.
Sadly I missed the pun for Amnesia, which isn’t like me at all. Maybe because it’s a firm favourite of mine, and where I came in with Richards catalogue after seeing him for the first time at Cropredy in ‘87.
Waht does ‘Locals favourite’ mean?
The one nearest to you on the shelf.
See my comment above.
Neil Young – you could choose half a dozen for each category, and still have plenty left. I’m not even going to try.
Lucinda
Divides the fandom – Spirit Meets the Bone
GOAT – Car Wheels on a Gravel Road
Locals favourite -Sweet Old World
Mental Breakdown – Good Souls Better Angels
Everyone forgets about – Ramblin’
Fan favourite – Lucinda Williams
Overlooked masterpiece – Ghosts of Highway 21
Love it or hate it – This Sweet Old World
No World Without Tears
Yup, fantastic record. As is Essence. And Blessed. Which category to put them in though? Any of them could be Fan Favourite I guess
Blessed is often overlooked for some reason I can’t fathom.
Live at Filmore is excellent too but don’t know where I would put it.
This only really works where there are 8 or more albums in the catalogue.
For the Sex Pistols, it’s basically Never Mind The Bollocks in all boxes. Maybe Great Rock n Roll Swindle in the Divides box.
Overlooked Gem? The Professionals – I Didn’t See It Coming
I saw the OP and just assumed it was Lana’s release schedule for the next 8 weeks.
Might as well go big:
Divides the fandom – Let It Be
Greatest – Abbey Road
Locals fave – Sgt. Pepper’s
Mental breakdown – White Album
One everyone forgets about – Yellow Submarine
Either you love it or hate it – Let It Be
Fan favourite – Revolver
Overlooked masterpiece – With the Beatles
That’s the Dave Clark Five done, next…
Fine choices, no real argument there. But …
for me, overlooked gem would be Help (yes, really)
Yellow Submarine is a compilation put together without The HJJ’s input.
Like Let It Be, then.
Abbey Road has a number of good songs on side 1 but also 2 pretty poor ones. Side 2 is wonderful, but the much vaunted medley does contain some fairly average unfinished efforts. It’s brilliant of course but nowhere near their best
OK I`ll try Sparks…. my own personal view
Divides the fandom – Lil Beethoven
Greatest – Indiscreet
Locals Fave – Kimono My House
Mental breakdown – The Seduction of Ingmar Bergman
One Everyone Forgets about – Balls
Fan favourite – Hippopotamus
Overlooked masterpiece = Introducing Sparks
….or not.
There’s very little to discuss here. I think I’d have gone for ‘Interior Design’ as the one everyone forgets about.
I’d swap Lil’ Beethoven and Indiscreet
Freddy Steady Favourite; Hello Young Lovers.
Divides the fandom – Some Girls Wander by Mistake (many stopped after this)
Greatest – First and Last and Always (obvious in spite of multiple versions and unreliable production)
Locals fave – Floodland (what everyone knows)
Mental breakdown – A Slight Case of Overbombing (stopped making records after this)
One everyone forgets about – Gift (different group, sort of)
Either you love it or hate it – Vision Thing (horrible)
Fan favourite – BBC Sessions 1982–1984 (nostalgia fest)
Overlooked masterpiece – Reptile House (the true dark heart)
reckon you could use Vision Thing for “divides the fandom” and “mental breakdown” as well
I would just classify 1990-Present as the mental breakdown. 32 years since the last album. 32!
Depeche Mode
Divides the fandom – Exciter
Greatest – Violator
Locals Fave – Catching up with Depeche Mode
Mental breakdown – Ultra
One Everyone Forgets about – Some Great Reward
Fan favourite – Songs of Faith and Devotion
Overlooked masterpiece = Black Celebration
well – as usual, the answers (are)
Which divides the fandom: Tin Machine
GAOAT: Hunky Dory
Locals favourite: Lets Dance
Mental breakdown: Low
The one everyone forgets about: Reality
Either you love it or hate it: Lodger
Fan favourite: Scary Monsters
Overlooked masterpiece: The Next Day
Just a couple of quibbles from me:
Fans favourite – Stationtostation
Everyone forgets – Buddha Of Suburbia
😃
Ooh – I was wavering on Buddha as the ‘everyone forgets’ but find it gets mentioned by pretty much everyone on the podcast!
But ‘everyone’ on the podcast is not ‘everyone’. The people you talk to are mega-fans.
Locals favourite aka civilians favourite that their publicist tells them to drop into conversation: Ziggy Stardust
Tigger, please – it’s STATIONTOSTATIONDAVIDBOWIE
…..standards are slipping…
Just a couple of nudges. It was obviously past your bedtime 😉
GOAT: Clearly STS
TWEFA: Hours (Reality had a tour and a bit of a double live LP)
Good point!
Divides the fandom – SP EAK IN GI N TO NGU ES
Greatest of all time – Remain In Light
Locals favourite – Little Creatures
Mental Breakdown – True Stories
The one everyone forgets – More Songs About Buildings And Food
Either love or hate – Naked
Fan favourite – Fear Of Music
Overlooked masterpiece – Stop Making Sense
SP EAK IN GI N TO NGU ES – oh, you… 🤭
😉
My OL would be TALKING HEADS: 77….
…or More Songs…
Divides the fandom – The Name of This Band is… (You’re either disc 1 or disc 2)
Greatest of all time – Remain In Light (no debate)
Locals favourite – Stop Making Sense (It was everywhere for a few years)
Mental Breakdown – Fear of Music
The one everyone forgets – Naked
Either love or hate – True Stories
Fan favourite – Little Creatures
Overlooked masterpiece – The Name of this Band is…
Divides the fandom Techno pop
GOAT The Man-Machine
Locals favourite Computer World
Mental Breakdown all those Expo 2000 mixes but not really it’s Kraftwerk
Everyone forgets about the Mix
Love or hate Tour De France
Fan favourite Trance Europe Express
Overlooked masterpiece Radioactivity
Everyone forgets Kraftwerk 1 & 2 and Ralf And Florian. Even Kraftwerk themselves.
Spot on, especially the OM. Beautiful record.
EDIT – the breakdown is Electric Cafe. They lost their confidence making it and have never got it back, hence endless* reiterations of their back catlogue.
*endless….
Divides the fandom – Manifesto
Greatest of all time – Avalon
Locals favourite – Flesh + Blood
Mental Breakdown – Country Life
The one everyone forgets – Siren
Either love or hate – Roxy Music
Fan favourite – Stranded
Overlooked masterpiece – For Your Pleasure
…or, to put it another way…
Divides the fandom – Roxy Music
Greatest of all time – For Your Pleasure
Locals favourite – Flesh + Blood
Mental Breakdown – Manifesto
The one everyone forgets – Siren
Either love or hate – Avalon
Fan favourite – Country Life
Overlooked masterpiece – Stranded
At least we agree on a couple. How did you get those black x’s in there?
@Tiggerlion
Very hard to carry out this exercise on Roxy – every album is perfect in its own way (similar to Kraftwerk or the Dan)…if you hadn’t put Avalon as greatest of all time, I might have left this one alone…
(ps: I don’t get the black x reference)
I can see little black boxes with an x in them scattered around your post.
That’s weird – I can’t see them! I cut and pasted my list out of Notes – maybe some unexpected artefact?
Ah … these are special hidden characters/markers in your native text editor that have somehow been passed across.
See it sometimes at work copy and pasting in spreadsheets or code.
Hit and miss, and no reason for it as far as I can tell.
Some Unexpected Artefact….. Depeche bootleg…..?
…you may see strange characters ..
I was going to suggest Avalon as the locals favourite because I thought it sold millions but on checking the stats it did all right but not as big a seller as I thought. As you were.
Divides the fandom – Catch A Fire
Greatest of all time – Live!
Locals favourite – Exodus
Mental Breakdown – Survival
The one everyone forgets – Soul Revolution, Part II
Either love or hate – Rastaman Vibration
Fan favourite – African Herbsman
Overlooked masterpiece – Kaya
CAF divides the fandom? What the actual….?
Too much Rock???
Maybe… but anybody who doesn’t like CAF wants the thick end of a ragman’s trumpet.
Legend divides the fans, I would say. Some would say it’s sanitised civilian fluff. Bollocks of course.
The very fact that Catch A Fire is available in“with the guitar solos” form and “without” suggests it’s apt.
I would have Burnin’ rather than Kaya, but maybe it’s not so overlooked..?
It could well be the GOAT but some fans dismiss it as not real reggae. And, yes, they deserve the thick end of ….
Beach Boys
Divides the fandom – Love You
Greatest of all time – Pet Sounds
Locals favourite – Endless Summer
Mental Breakdown – Smiley Smile
The one everyone forgets – CATP-ST
Either love or hate – LA Light Album
Fan favourite – 15 Big Ones
Overlooked masterpiece – Today
Smile is surely the definition of mental breakdown
Yes – that, and Alexander ‘Skip’ Spence’s “Oar”.
…and Madcap Laughs…
And Kevin R’s My Beauty
Well, you win the white carnation…
New Order
Divides the fandom Republic
GOAT Technique
Locals favourite substance
Everyone forgets about Movement
Mental breakdown get ready
Love or hate Brotherhood
Fan favourite Power corruption and lies
Overlooked masterpiece Low Life
Hmm…interesting
I think of Republic as an undiscovered gem.
(It also falls in the marmite category)
Republic would be great if released just as Regret.
I would swap Low Life and Technique
I am with Chris on this one.
My view on this
Divides the fandom Republic
GOAT Low Life
Locals favourite Substance
Everyone forgets about Movement
Mental breakdown Get Ready
Love or hate Brotherhood
Fan favourite Technique
Overlooked masterpiece Power Corruption and Lies
Pink Floyd:
Either you love it or you hate it – The Final Cut
Greatest Album of All Time – Wish You Were Here
Overlooked masterpiece – Animals
Mental breakdown – The Wall
The one everyone forgets about – More
Which divides the fandom – Division Bell
Fan Favourite – Meddle
Locals favourite – Dark Side Of The Moon
An alternative formulation…
Divides the fandom – Ummagumma
Greatest of All Time – Wish You Were Here
Locals favourite – The Wall
Mental breakdown – The Final Cut
The one everyone forgets – Saucerful of Secrets
Either love or you hate – Atom Heart Mother
Fan Favourite – Animals
Overlooked masterpiece – Obscured by Clouds
If you want to underlook OBC: https://falsememoryfoam.blogspot.com/2019/04/in-private-email-roger-waters-writes.html
Why does anybody send HP a private email? It’s about as private as pasting photographs of your knob on bus shelters. Which isn’t allowed… apparently.
In a private email, Moose confesses to “feeling strange urges … is not love under any guise a good and honourable thing? … must I live with guilt?” etc. etc. (Full text on request).
I wrote all that on vellum and you’ve gone to the bother of typing it all out? You’re making a rod for your own bat*
(*oop, wrong thread)
Hmm, one could chop this many ways, but here goes:
GOAT: Sign ‘O’ The Times
Overlooked Masterpiece: Lovesexy
Love It Or Hate It: Diamonds and Pearls
The One Everyone Forgets About: Graffiti Bridge
Divides The Fans: Batman
Fan Fave: Parade
Locals: Purple Rain
I’d swap the GOAT and Fan Favourite…and the OEFA, which could also be the OM, is The Gold Experience. I agree though…so difficult.
No place for Around The World In A Day?
The one everyone forgets, or overlooked masterpiece, surely?
I’d say The Rainbow Children is the one that divides the fans. Basically, I think any “artist finds religion album” will do this.
You’re right about Lovesexy.
Todd Rundgren
Album which divides the fandom – With A Twist
Greatest Album of All Time – A Wizard A True Star
Locals favourite – Something/Anything
Mental breakdown – Initiation (esp side 2)
The one everyone forgets – Faithful
Either you love it or you hate it – Todd Rundgren’s Utopia
Fan Favourite – Todd
Overlooked masterpiece – Hermit of Mink Hollow
Thought about switching those last two
I seem to have arbitrarily limited my selection to the pre- “big break” albums – a case could be made for one or two of the post-2005 albums as overlooked masterpieces, but I’ve done it now so I’ll leave it as it is…
Divides the fandom – The Quiet Zone
Greatest of All Time – Godbluff
Locals favourite – Pawn Hearts
Mental breakdown – Vital
The one everyone forgets – World Record
Either love or you hate – Aerosol Grey Machine
Fan Favourite – Still Life
Overlooked masterpiece – H to He
I do like the idea of a VDGG “locals favourite”. I shall look for Pawn Hearts when I’m next in Sainsburys…
They don’t sell ‘that kind of thing’ in my local Sainsbury’s, but you might find it in the centre aisle at Aldi next door.
Up with that kind of thing!
Careful, now…
Just shoe-horning them into the boxes I’ve been given, man…although, well may you laugh…
I picked Pawn Hearts as local favourite because it often seems to be the only one that anybody has heard of!
It’s in the seafood aisle.
….or on the top shelf?
On reflection: we’re now beyond 150 responses. How many of the other Local’s Favourites named above and below are available in your local Sainsburys? Eh? Eh?! Answer that and stay fashionable!
Pretzel Logic: Taste The Difference
‘Our’ Sainsburys as of last week has no cds, dvds or vinlys. They still have food and gin, though.
@fitterstoke forget World Record…. never!
T’was the my entry into the VDGG/PH world, caught the tour in Manchester, bought the album as a result and never looked back, and almost 46 years later shall be in Manchester on Tuesday hoping something(s) are played from World Record
@Bogart
Well, I’m with you, of course – Godbluff/Still Life/World Record, taken as a block, represent probably my favourite music of the last 50 years. However, using t’ Afterworders as a sample, VdGG mostly stopped after Pawn Hearts…hence some of my placings above. I didn’t see them on that tour – but the NY Beacon Theatre show from the 1976 tour has been a favoured b**tl*g for years, so I know roughly what you heard.
I was planning to be at the Manchester show myself on Tuesday – however I am no longer able to go, due to circs beyond my control – I am seriously envious of you…and I look forward to your review!
@fitterstoke Fair point, well made!
I purchased an import copy of PH from Robinsons in Salford , not long after buying Quite Zone, got it home played it, played it again, then played it periodically over the years, but just couldn’t get it. Then saw play Lighthouse Keepers at the RNCM in 2013 and suddenly the album made sense.
Shame you won’t be at the show Tuesday, as for a review, how do you put the sound of VdGG in to words….
@Bogart
I believe they played Masks!
Here’s something from the Birmingham show on Monday…
Big Elt:
Divides the fandom – Rock of the Westies
Greatest of all time – Captain Fantastic & the Brown Dirt Cowboy
Locals favourite – Greatest Hits
Mental Breakdown – Madman Across the Water
The one everyone forgets – Empty Sky
Either love or hate – Blue Moves

Overlooked masterpiece – Tumbleweed Connection
I’ll be brave:
Divides the fandom – Goats Head Soup
Greatest of all time – Beggars Banquet
Locals favourite – Sticky Fingers
Mental Breakdown – Their Satanic Majesties Request
The one everyone forgets – Between The Buttons
Either love or hate – It’s Only Rock And Roll
Fan favourite – Exile On Main Street
Overlooked masterpiece – Aftermath
You’ve changed your tune on Aftermath. ..
I kept overlooking it. It’s a lot better as a double album:
https://tidal.com/playlist/2bd5f0e4-c30e-4be8-9c69-749e8d76537e
It’s just a lot better without Going Home on it.
I’m pretty much with you Tigs, although their are loads of candidates for the one everyone forgets!
I think the real overlooked masterpiece is the RS first album. It showed not only a different way of playing and sounding, but also of being (in the 60s), alternative to the Beatles’ prettier melodies and harmonies. This was a different notion of ‘beat group’ and this was the occasion of its beginning.
I’m inclined to agree. You argue the case very well.
Let’s ditch Aftermath (vastly over-rated 😉 ) and replace with the debut.
Nearly went for that one
Divides the fandom – Mighty Like A Rose
Greatest of all time – This Year’s Model
Locals favourite – Armed Forces
Mental Breakdown – Goodbye Cruel World
The one everyone forgets – Wise Up Ghost
Either love or hate – Almost Blue
Fan favourite – Imperial Bedroom
Overlooked masterpiece – The Delivery Man
Looks about right but I’d have King of America as fan favourite
And IB as GOAT
Genesis:
Either you love it or you hate it – Genesis (“shapes”)
Greatest Album of All Time – Selling England By The Pound
Overlooked masterpiece – Duke
Mental breakdown – The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway
The one everyone forgets about – Abacab
Which divides the fandom – And Then There We’re Three
Fan Favourite – A Trick Of The Tail
Locals favourite – Invisible Touch
Not sure on the Love/Hate one – could be Foxtrot ?
My vote for Love/Hate would be Lamb. Simply because I hate the damn thing. I’d like to whip off its windscreen wiper.
I think you’re confusing it with the first PG album…
Arf!
I think you’ve forgotten about the one that everyone really forgets about : Calling All Stations.
Let’s try Joni…(not easy, to be honest)
Divides the fandom – Mingus
Greatest of All Time – Blue
Locals favourite – Court and Spark
Mental breakdown – Turbulent Indigo
The one everyone forgets – Taming the Tiger
Either love or you hate – Don Juan’s Reckless Daughter
Fan Favourite – Hejira
Overlooked masterpiece – For the Roses
That seems about right – but as you say, not easy…
I’m tempted to make “Hissing of Summer Lawns” GOAT and ”Blue” locals fave – controversial!
That was actually precisely my first draft, and then I changed it. Court and Spark or Hejira could equally be GOAT
Aye…difficult when GOAT is actually a run of albums rather than a single LP…
Well navigated!
I guess this has to be done…
Divides the fandom – Inarticulate Speech of the Heart
Greatest of All Time – Astral Weeks
Locals favourite – Avalon Sunset
Mental breakdown – Latest Record Project Volume 1
The one everyone forgets – What’s Wrong with this Picture?
Either love or you hate – Wavelength
Fan Favourite – Veedon Fleece
Overlooked masterpiece – Hymns to the Silence
The one Van Morrison forgets – Tupelo Honey
Yes, which also makes it arguably the overlooked masterpiece
Given its lengthy gestation, largely forgettable follow up (Wavelength) and the two or three years of grudging 45-minute (if you were lucky) live shows that followed it, Period of Transition is surely VTM’s mental breakdown album.
As Nick Kent wrote at the start of his review at the time “what we have here is a most distressing set of circumstances…”
My own take on Van would be
Divides – Common One
GOAT. – Veedon Fleece
Local Fave – Astral Weeks
Mental
Breakdown. – Period of Transition
Everyone
forgets – Anything after Healing Game
Love of Hate. – Hard Nose or Days Like These
Fan Favourite. – Too Late to Stop Now
Overlooked
Masterpiece. – Poetic Champions Compose
Can anyone clarify the difference between
Fan Favorite and Local Favourite
Love or Hate and Divides the Fans
Fan fave is, er, fan fave. Local fave is the casual/civilian supermarket shopper’s choice, he says not at all condescendingly.
Divides the fandom – Wavelength (divides his career, too)
Greatest of All Time – Astral Weeks
Locals favourite – Moondance
Mental breakdown – Transition
The one everyone forgets – Blowing Your Mind
Either love or you hate – anything post Warners (TBH, IMHO, IMS etc.)
Fan Favourite – Veedon Fleece
Overlooked masterpiece – Hard Nose
@Chrisf
He’s also done his best to get everyone to forget the one he did with Linda Gail Lewis (the name of which i struggled to remember) – So you Win Again
The eight Eurythmics studio albums. Doesn’t really work, to be honest; several interchangeable options here.
Divides the fandom – We Too Are One
Greatest of All Time – Sweet Dreams
Locals favourite – Be Yourself Tonight
Mental breakdown – Revenge
The one everyone forgets- In the Garden
Either love or you hate – Peace
Fan Favourite – Touch
Overlooked masterpiece – Savage
Good shout for Savage.
I always decided whether a Eurythmics song was good or not on whether Stewart was playing a guitar, if he was then it was nearly always a dud. They were a great electronic band and a crap rock band.
NO HITS!
Divides: Give ‘Em Enough Rope
GOAT: London Calling
Locals: The Story Of The Clash Vol 1
Love Or Hate: Sandinista!
Mental Breakdown: Cut The Crap
Everyone Forgets: Black Market Clash
Overlooked Masterpiece: Combat Rock
..thought this was going well, but I don’t think The Clash fits fans’ favourite and am not keen to change the others..
I think that the ninth category is The One That Isn’t What People Think It Is. For the Should I Stay Or Should I Go Number One Hitmakers, it would be Combat Rock.
SISOSIG was originally released as a double A with Straight To Hell. When it had its jeans-pimping re-release, was STH still on the other side, does anyone know?
That would be cool – like the way Billy Bragg has a number one record because he was a double A with Wet Wet Wet on the Beatles tribute single..
Sadly not. It had ‘Rush’ by Big Audio Dynamite II (i.e. BAD minus everyone except Mick Jones) on the flip.
In the rest of the world, to promote the The Singles comp it had This Is Radio Clash and London Calling.
B-side by a different band? How bizarre. Like having a Sex Pistols song with Jah Wobble on the other side.
I play their Top 10 hits 1977-85 compilation on a loop, it is never ever off the CD player… every single minute of every single day… THAT is how much I value them. It’s on right now.
Must be pretty much their biggest fan, and, as you know, I don’t do dodgers.
Divides the fandom – On The Corner
Greatest of all time – In A Silent Way
Locals favourite – Kind Of Blue
Mental Breakdown – Live-Evil
The one everyone forgets – Someday My Prince Will Come
Either love or hate – Get Up With It
Fan favourite – Round About Midnight
Overlooked masterpiece – Nefertiti
Nice…
Tempted to make Jack Johnson the Fan fave…
Also, just about any LP in the run of Second Great Quintet records could be classed as overlooked masterpieces…Nefertiti as good an example as any.
So was I.
Speaking of which, we need @colin-h over here to do the honours for the Mac.
Blimey.
Another artist I honestly don’t think can be broken down like this.
But In A Silent Way as GOAT when it cowers beside Bitches Brew irrespective of any other albums?
I salute your cajones & unmitigated audacity whilst disagreeing 100%!
Cheers!
😄
👍👍👍
“ In A Silent Way as GOAT when it cowers beside Bitches Brew irrespective of any other albums?”
In the words of Moose’s Afterword T-shirt mentioned below: “wrong but interesting…”
I’d put Bitches Brew as the Mental Breakdown.
It sold a shitload of copies at the time but I’d say that most who bought it at the time did so because of the cover art and the music press hype. I bet most of them only played it a few times and wished they’d bought two other albums instead.
In A Silent Way is a lot more playable by the non-hardcore.
Miles is too difficult an artist for this type of categorisation as there are at least four separate career phases, possibly five, to consider and all have their highs and lows.
Divides the fandom – Monster
GOAT – Lifes Rich Pageant
Locals’ Favourite – Out Of Time
Mental Breakdown – Around The Sun (but I like it)
The one everyone forgets – Collapse Into Now
Love or hate – Automatic For The People
Fan favourite – Murmur
Overlooked Masterpiece – Up
There are people who hate Automatic For The People?
A lot of hardcore fans look down on it because of its ubiquitousness and as it represents their furthest move away from their cult/indie/college days.
Doesn’t that divide the fandom?
Love or hate is a division, is it not? 😏
Don’t hate it, just not too bothered about it.
I prefer New Adventures In Hi Fi
(but then I may be slightly mad)
Some strange choices.
Automatic is clearly the greatest of all time. Monster is probably the mental breakdown one.
Disagree. The promotion of ATS was all about Peter being pissed off with the musical direction and Michael struggling with writer’s block. Monster was written deliberately as a reaction to Automatic and to be played live and loud in stadia.
I think Monster is when they forgot what made them great. Regarding ATS, stuff after Berry is not really the same band.
Divides the fandom – John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman
Greatest of all time – A Love Supreme
Locals favourite – Giant Steps
Mental Breakdown – Ascension
The one everyone forgets – Crescent
Either love or hate – My Favorite Things
Fan favourite – Live At The Village Vanguard
Overlooked masterpiece – First Meditations
Locals My Favourite, shirley. The title track became his Streets of London/Stairway/Dancing in the Moonlight etc. Of course just because he had to play it didn’t mean he had to play it for 25 minutes, but Trane gotta Trane…
I understand that “ridicule is nothing to be scared of”…
…so I’m going to suggest Ballads as the Overlooked Masterpiece (overlooked because no ‘sheets of sound’ or Coltrane compositions; masterpiece because it has some of the finest jazz ballad playing on record to date, IMHO).
I’d like to nominate the Duke Ellington album for that spot.
I pondered Ballads and Olé (much better than Sketches Of Spain) and Africa/Brass. In the end I chose the one Coltrane himself overlooked, re-recording it less well and not bothering to release First during his lifetime.
@fitterstoke I’m with you on Ballads – was playing it only yesterday. It’s a beauty.
Is Lush Life an overlooked masterpiece? Doesn’t seem to get talked about much. I love it for the title track, and also because the lack of a piano on all but one track means there’s nowhere to hide for JC and Chambers.
Lush Life used to be on a twofer CD with (the Prestige) Coltrane. Terrific value.
There’s a 5-Original-Prestige-Albums CD flimsybox available, with Soultrane, Lush Life, Dakar, Bahia and The Last Trane. £11.99 from Amazon

No Impulse box yet, as far as I know.
There is The Classic Quartet – The Complete Impulse Studio Recordings, all of their eight albums presented in chronological order. It does not include the albums with a different line up than just the four of them. It’s incredible and costs £30-40.
I probably agree re Lush Life as an OM – but I’ll stick with Ballads as my own answer…

Divides the fandom – Western Stars
Overlooked masterpiece is Magic. Think most love 1975-85 while accepting a full concert release from 78, 80-81 or 84-85 would have been preferable
I’d have Tom Joad as overlooked masterpiece.
I considered TJ for “divides the fandom”! It’s definitely now to admire rather than like.
@dai the amount of online moaning about Live 1975-85 is incredible. You’re right that almost everyone thinks it should have been a full show release, but after that people still aren’t very happy despite it being four hours of the greatest rock n roll band ever. They should have used this recording of this song instead of that one, you can hear the overdubs, why is this song the 1981 version when it was much better on the 1978 tour, why isn’t the 78 pairing of Racing In The Street into Thunder Road here*, Jon Landau had too much to do with the song selection, why aren’t there more unreleased songs, where are the cover versions, blah blah blah
Also, despite Wrecking Ball being the best record he’s made in the last thirty years, the overlooked masterpiece should really be Tracks but not sure if it counts.
*this is actually a legitimate complaint afaiac
Interesting take on Wrecking Ball, wrong but interesting. I would put Magic and The Rising well ahead of it, maybe Devils and Dust too. It’s better than Working on a Dream and High Hopes though.
One that splits the fans is actually Seeger Sessions, some loath it.

Surely Bandwagonesque for local’s favourite, or possibly GOAT?
That’s a fair point. Though maybe in the fan favourite (though not mine) spot.
Surely Endless Arcade is the divisive one, being post Blake. (I love it)
Post Blake? Post Love, shurely…
It was late, mixing my Normans and Gerards
I agree about Endless Arcade being the divisive one, for the moment anyway – with a year or two’s distance, I could see it as the Overlooked Masterpiece…

Either love or hate – The Song Remains the Same

Overlooked masterpiece – Physical Graffiti
Hmmm … Physical Graffiti = overlooked? Overlong maybe, but not really overlooked. Personally, I’d swap In Through The Out Door to overlooked masterpiece (I think it is), and add Coda as the one everyone forgets about.
Just wondering if II might be the locals fave “cos it has the Top Of The Pops theme on it”
Fine by me, re PG and ITTOD. If II becomes locals favourite, then IV should be GOAT
Nahh…IV is definitely locals fave…Stairway trumps TOTP with the locals…
Personally, I’d have Graffiti as GOAT and II as fan fave.

Can’t argue with that. But to be honest, you could pretty much put any of their albums in any of the categories and it would work.
Though you are definitely correct about Shiftwork which is where I came in to the weird and frightening world of the grüppe.
Good choice. I would put Wonderful and Frightening World in there somewhere ( as overlooked?) and Perverted by Language as the forgotten one.

Controversial re Voyage!
Oh, believe me – on the fan pages, it was very divisive, particularly on release. Many loved it from the off, but others moaned incessantly about how ‘disappointed’ they were. A few of the naysayers have come around as the songs have become more familiar, but others remain unimpressed, even citing the lack of Michael Tretow’s engineering as a weakness, even though his absence was never a choice.
@black-type
You are clearly more of a fan than I, very well informed indeed!
My sister’s partner is Swedish and some years ago played me some of Michael Tretow’s albums which he owned on vinyl. They sounded awfully a lot like ABBA.

Loves or hates: Soused
Fan favourite: Scott
Overlooked masterpiece: Climate of Hunter
Yeah not bad. But I just could not quite see Scott 4 to be greater masterpiece than Tilt or Climate. A conservative choice, surely?
Yes, that’s fair. There is the chanteur Scott, the experimental Scott, and the MOR Scott, and I’m not sure how to best put them together. Don’t like the “mental breakdown” category either tbh, but those are the rules.
MB would be his material between Til The Band and Nite Flights when he was on the piss and not giving a monkeys.
Moviegoer is divisive – some find it naff, others rightly point out how bloody good his singing is.

Overlooked masterpiece: Where are You? (overlooked because no-one knows where it is, arfity-arf)
Very good – especially Where are You…at least as good as Wee Small Hours and Only the Lonely, but doesn’t get the same level of acclaim…
The first Frank album I bought on the back of a ‘reappraisal’ in the NME, circa 1985.
I’ve been through two phases when I convinced myself that Watertown was some kind of lost pop masterpiece, but I’m okay now, thanks. I’d have She Shot Me Down as OM, one of the great Solitary Drinker albums.

Locals: Hot Rats (the only one locals will have heard)
Breakdown: Thing Fish
Forgets: Orchestral Favourites
Loves or hates: Shut Up n Play Yer Guitar
Fan favourite: Burnt Weenie Sandwich
Overlooked masterpiece: The Yellow Shark
That’s a mighty fine list, Fitter, apart from omitting One Size Fits All or indeed anything from the ’73-’74 touring band.
Thanks, Mike – I take your point about the 73/74 band, difficulty of picking 8 from a catalogue of HUGE proportions when many of them fit in multiple categories…
Which example of that band would you choose and where would you place it?
I’d replace Burnt Weenie Sandwich, great though it is, with One Size Fits All.
Outside of the UK and Western Europe I’d replace Hot Rats, which flopped badly in the USA at the time, with Overnite Sensation because that one sold well (for a Zappa album) everywhere.
This is why this thing started with Lana: it only properly works with artists who have done 8 albums.
For Zappa we’d have to come up with about 130 categories.
The one where the funny songs are actually quite funny: Them or Us
The racist one: Thing Fish
The one that sounds musically not so much like Frank Zappa as Frank Sidebottom: We’re Only In It For the Money (1985 version)
I’m feeling rather pleased that I don’t listen to Frank Zappa (although I do have a number of his albums – of course, BONGO FURY is Beefheart really).
Thing Fish was Zappa’s shot at an off-Broadway musical and was a mis-step in that there was no likelihood of it ever being performed. Far too heavy-handed.
The racial stuff is a very dark lampooning of American racial stereotypes and how, in particular, black people were portrayed at the time in mainstream movies and stage theatrics. White so-called liberals tended not to react to the subtle but undeniable racism in those fields, so Zappa exaggerated it to the max, threw some twisted eugenics and conspiracy theory into the mix and shoved it in the faces of his almost-exclusively-white audience. No wonder it flopped.
It needs to be remembered that the band members enacting the grossly-exaggerated racial stereotypes were educated black people, aware of exactly what they were doing and why.
@Moose-the-Mooche
“This is why this thing started with Lana: it only properly works with artists who have done 8 albums”
Yeah: but The Afterworders get really invested in a knotty problem like this – me included – after all, it’s only leisuretime, isn’t it?
That reminds me – no-one’s done the Softs…
There’s part of me* thinks an artist shouldn’t be allowed to do more than 8 albums.
(*the goose-stepping, staccato-voiced part)
Aha! Another thread…pick a prolific artist/band – which eight albums get saved, the remainder to be consigned to the void in perpetuity…
Do it Stokey, and watch the chicken roll in…
I’m just glad of the current supply chain issues – the thought of 3 hampers worth of Corsair was making me regret starting this…….
You’ll end up like a one-man harvest festival (TMFTL)
You’re right about The Grand Wazoo.
He’s also right about The Yellow Shark.
I’m not sure Filmore divides fans, simply because I’m not sure any Zappa fan actually likes it.
I like it more than Francesco Zappa and I’m pretty sure any Zappa fan would concur.
Agreed – and I don’t like Fillmore. Francesco Zappa is a senseless waste of plastic.
Well to be fair, you can both prefer Filmore to Francesco Zappa and also not actually like it. I’d argue that “Better than Francesco Zappa” isn’t exactly a ringing endorsement.
Maybe I’m wrong though and it’s more popular than I thought. I always had it down as a bunch of crappy groupie routines plus a half decent rendition of Peaches en Regalia.
Come to think of it, I think I prefer Francesco Zappa.
I clearly stated above that I don’t like Fillmore…I don’t enjoy the crappy groupy routines either – so why do you think that maybe you’re wrong?
The 2 redeeming features of Fillmore are Happy Together and Tears Began To Fall. The rest is pretty puerile stuff, as is most of Just Another Band From L.A. Those two albums were pretty much the entire stage show of that iteration of The Mothers.
Francesco Zappa is a series of lacklustre performances of lacklustre compositions by an 18th century composer of no great repute, who had a similar name to Frank, on his newly-acquired Synclavier.
Jazz From Hell was a much better example of what he could produce from that beast of a machine.
LA and Filmore…. imagine following Zappa for the three-four years before, finally getting to see him live and getting that. Poor sods.
The worst thing is it sort of sets you against the Turtles, which is wrong because they were brilliant.
XTC
Divides the fandom – Go 2 (early jerky era LP that routinely ends up as the last favourite XTC album on lists but I’ve know some non-detractors.
Greatest of all time – Skylarking (just really super, super girl)
Locals favourite – Drums & Wires ( the one with Making Plans For Nigel on it)
Mental Breakdown – Mummer (quite literally in this case, as Partridge recovers after getting off the hamster wheel (and valium) of touring for good)
The one everyone forgets – Wasp Star. Has its moments but their final (sans Dave Gregory) album wasn’t quite the swansong that its immediate predecessor Apple Venus would’ve been.
Either love or hate – Oranges & Lemons (challenging double album that for every fruity pop single to enjoy, you also have to eat your greens too).
Fan favourite – Black Sea. A robust, concrete block of an album.
Overlooked masterpiece – The aforementioned Apple Venus. Only overlooked by the general public, but if we’re honest, most of their albums have been overlooked.

Piece of Minds biggest failing is it’s not Number Of The Beast.
You are absolutely correct with that last sentence.
Ian Dury
Divides the fandom – Lord Upminster. Ian’s first solo album with Sly & Robbie. Bit short and a bit of filler but gave us The Body Song and Spasticus Autisticus.
Greatest of all time – New Boots And Panties. Solid 10/10 classic.
Locals favourite – Juke Box Dury. Collection of the non-album featured early hit singles and b sides, , so an album of fresh material in its own right, but to the layman, this is all you need.
Mental Breakdown – Laughter. Ian’s come down album that dealt with his alcoholism, mental health issues and traumatic childhood.
The one everyone forgets – 4000 Thousand Weeks Holiday. Ian pops his curly haired bonce over the parapet again in 1984 with The Music Students and loses his way a bit with whimsical wordage and tinny jazz funk.
Either love or hate – Handsome Kilburn & The Highroads record a rag tag of musical styles that includes music hall, C&W, pub rock, ska, folk and calypso. Not for everyone.
Fan favourite – Do It Yourself. Some of his finest lyrics hidden in the wallpaper sleeve. Musically imaginative to boot.
Overlooked masterpiece – Mr. Love Pants. A brilliant return to form IMHO. Mash it up, Harry!

N by N West is up there. Most stuff past The Birds inc Torn Curtain is not up tp his earlier standards
Bloody good Television track tho’.
Does anyone hate The Birds? it’s my favourite Hitch. Released a few months after I was born, it was one of the first scary films I ever saw. Perhaps the first. Freaked me out. The playground scene. And the dead woman’s eyes. Totally freaked me out. Made me the man I am today probably. And more.

*tiptoes away in the manner of a silent-movie villain*
Bingo doesn’t divide the fandom. His articulate contributions are welcome by everybody, even when they’re bonkers wrong. And KFD’s the least hateable contributor in the history of the internet. The others are all present and correct. Mental breakdown made me chuckle. Where am I? And who are you?
Not everybody appreciates KFD’s exotically themed Tubethreads – I do by the way.
Modesty forbids me from congratulating you on your irreproachable judgement and impeccable taste, Moosey, but surely the Afterworder everyone forgets is … you know! Him! What’s his name … ooh … Y-Fronts? … famous for being the second most handsome man on the Afterword … ooh … it’ll come to me in a minute … nope. All gone.
See, there you are, jumping in assuming it’s all about you, when the GOAT is clearly the HP formerly known as Bob.
I’m sorry – you are …?
Too many HPs, not enough Daddies.
There are only eight slots, and every penny won’t fit them.
Hur, hur and thrice hur
“Wrong, but interesting…”
Yet again, I am denied a shoo-in for “the dullest” category.
Mental breakdown… are you George?

Statement of fact.
F***** sue me!
The case for the prosecution rests, m’lud.
HP=hedgepig, oder?
In the old, old place (Word blog) there was actually an official poll done where you voted for your favourite contributors and the winner got a rosette. If I remember correctly it started off quite jolly and then it turned into a furious flurry of flouncing.
Excellent!
I’ve still got that rosette, actually
I think this is the saddest thing I’ve read for some time.

The one everyone forgets – Fourth
Either love or you hate – Softs
Fan Favourite – Seven
Overlooked masterpiece – Fifth
Interesting. I disagree violently with some of this, but can’t come up with anything better.
THAT is interesting…
I just can’t imagine a universe in which I’d find Third in a supermarket rack, or even known at all outside a very small nerdographic – more a fan favourite? I don’t think anyone’s forgotten Fourth because Wyatt’s still there. And I reckon Bundles is more a fan divider – even a cut-off point – than the much-loved first album.
All reasonable points…so why couldn’t you come up with anything better?
Locals fave – where the band are a bit…er…esoteric, I’ve been assuming a slightly more specialist group of locals: if you’ve heard of the Softs, you’re probably aware of Third, even if you don’t know all the rest (same with VdGG and Pawn Hearts) – I agree, not one for the supermarket.
Not sure the later jazz-rock fans are big on the first album…
I don’t think jazz-rock fans would get on with anything pre-Bundles. There’s nothing remotely rockist about Fifth. Six gets a bit forgot, doesn’t it? Seven is rightly loved. And Cockayne is just nightmarishly horrible – everything the Soft Machine were not.
Cockayne is a dreadful album…
First is furthest removed from any type of jazz, pure or hybridised. Like Piper…I almost treat it like a different band from what came after, hence “divides the fandom”.
I suppose the Phil Howard side of Fifth is the closest they got to free jazz: after that it was a slide toward jazz-rock, for better or worse, when the former Nucleus players arrived. Personally I really like Six and Seven: so for me, I suppose the “feel” started to really change post-Ratledge, not always in a good way…

Surely Parallel Lines is the GOAT AND locals fave though?
But Eat To The Beat is fantastic!
ETTB has the Ringo song, though so 9/10. Well, 11/12.
Four songs are worth at least double, making it 15/12.
I was listening to Side 1 of Parallel Lines yesterday and just marvelling at the attention to detail (the Chapman production, but also the playing) to every song. I would say here that uniquely both albums are both GOAT and Locals Favourite. Can’t get a fag paper between them. Both have one track (Sound Asleep and I’m Gonna Love You Too that stop them being 12/12).
The Hunter is a top Mental Breakdown shout.
One look at the cover is enough.

Not bad for a first attempt….
MATS isn’t divisive for me, I know it’s poop.
I think it’s pretty good, which proves how divisive it is.
@h-p-saucecraft
I know!
What is it that makes it a good album for you? For me it’s all too similar, directionless, weak. Comedown is decent enough I guess, typical Church jangle but that’s about it.
It’s “pretty good”, which isn’t the same as “good”. Not that keen on it. Couldn’t think of an album that qualifies – I don’t listen to anything post-Starfish, and that not much. I do rate Seance higher as the years go by, though but.
(And no, before you ask – I haven’t skyped the Great Man for a while. There was clearly some problem with the last Church album, the one that didn’t come out).
Well…
Post Starfish, you do get GAF of course. And P =‘A, their magnum opus of course. Otherwise, their late period displays a bit too much driftage for me. Miami is a corker though.
Now you can’t just leave that last comment hanging there. Was there a great lost album or is that we’re apprehensive about the first one without MWP and PK?
You know too much and must die. I don’t make the rules.
That’s really no answer @h-p-saucecraft.

This is very good, but to be honest for Overlooked Masterpiece I would make a case for pretty much his entire 60s output. The records he made before Music of My Mind seem to be ignored to a bewildering degree these days. Look at the tracklisting of Greatest Hits Volume 2. God almighty.

This was a tricky one in places, as so much of the Duke’s most vital work was done in the decades before the advent of the 33rpm long playing record.
No Newport ’58?
Prolly the biggest LP of the Duke’s lifetime, by rep at least.
I think you mean Newport’56, not Newport ’58, Moosey.
Newport ’56 (i.e. “Ellington at Newport”) was the performance and the album that reignited the Duke’s career. It contains the legendary version of “Diminuendo and Crescendo in Blue” where tenor saxman Paul Gonsalves drives the crowd into a howling FRENZY with a solo lasting 27 choruses.
There is, admittedly, an Ellington live album called “Newport 1958”, but it’s nowhere near as famous as the epoch-making ’56 set.
Nice.

In the newsagent over the road from where I used to work, the man behind the counter kept the magazines he “checked personally for quality” displayed prominently on a shelf at eye-level behind the till. So you could not go in for a can of harmless fizzy pop/Mars bar/40 Bensons without glancing over his shoulder. He always used to keep 40+ (the title worked on two levels) at the front.
I can remember my colleague Tom buying a mag from there featuring Ginger Spice in her previous career.

I actually think “masterpiece” is a bit of an exaggeration in both cases (Atonement being the only out-and-out masterpiece in the McEwan canon) though I’m a big fan of both Cement Garden and Child In Time – but I reckon Child In Time is the more overlooked.

Now then. I’m focusing specifically on birdsong. What’s your angle?
I hadn’t picked up on your musical angle so I just went with my long-held opinions on the birds of these islands. Unfortunately we don’t have nightingales here in Ireland. I can’t recall ever hearing any in my London days and I’ve been to Berkley Square.
There was a red kite hovering above us at my lad’s last – and final – home match. When I went to retrieve the ball from over the hedge behind the goal, it swooped down and tried to catch my brushed steel tea flask. I suppose it thought it was a grey rodent. That was the highlight of the game, which they lost 12 nil.
Have you considered becoming a children’s author?
Yeah – how can you call yourself dull, fentonsteve, when you come up with a top story like that?
I overlooked the blackcap today, as one has been frequenting the garden feeders. Very pleased to see it.
Not many years ago, they were solely migrants, but round our way, they started staying all year round about twenty years ago. Amongst my bird-watching chums, seeing a Little Egret was a major ‘tick’, but now I can see half a dozen on my daily bike ride. Great White Egrets, Glossy Ibis and Spoonbills now regular visitors.
I love the way they start off having a chat with themselves before breaking into song.
Saw a couple of spoonbills fly overhead last year, a decidedly odd looking bird. The glossy ibis seems to have been making its presence known this year.
Join us again next week as Hubes sees a Bird Of Paradise fly up his nose.
Ah oh sauceness one we know a song about that.

(and is best left forgotten to be honest)
Then there was the rather splendidly titled Flogging a Dead Horse
I got that cheap in about 1986, and not being able to afford NMTB the first side was manna from snotty heaven, especially with all the Swindle hits on the other side. In fact it’s the best SPs vinyl compo ever released (Department of Faint Praise)
“Spunk” should be in here somewhere, shirley? I’d put it as GOAT.
Ewww, TMI dude….
