I’ve no idea whether these Radio 1 DJ mix sessions are still going on but the best of them are well worth revisiting. Perennial favourites of mine are :
Greg Wilson 2009 : https://soundcloud.com/gregwilson/essential-mix-greg-wilson-mix-for-bbc-radio-1?si=8222008e70bb4ddcb00945a4c183d4e7&utm_source=clipboard&utm_medium=text&utm_campaign=social_sharing
A great mix of disco and early techno.
Laurent Garnier 2014 : https://soundcloud.com/laurent-garnier/essential-mix-bbc-radio-1-5-apr-2014?si=fca2629c16934098aa143f384ecf775c&utm_source=clipboard&utm_medium=text&utm_campaign=social_sharing
Exotic beats and loads of obscure electronica.
Todd Terje 2013 : https://soundcloud.com/toddterje/todd-terje-essential-mix-2013?si=ab4ce48031f242d59b9895a279c2e0aa&utm_source=clipboard&utm_medium=text&utm_campaign=social_sharing
A very eclectic mix of everything from Herb Alpert to Men At Work. Warning – contains Gerry Rafferty.
Anyone else have any favourites?

Good luck with this thread Mr Jet…
I’ve written “We could do with a box for links” on a postcard, which I’m going to send to The Mod’s suggestion box. Anyone got a stamp?
Mmmm. Sorry about the links but I couldn’t see how to annotate the links in the box with the DJ’s name etc.
Yes, there’s only one box in the ‘Post to the Forum’ thingy. You could either use the HTML editor (per Sal’s suggestion below) or post one in the OP, using the box, and the others in reply to yourself.
Try these:
Greg Wilson 2009
Laurent Garnier 2014
Todd Terje 2013
You need this simple html to make links work.
@salwarpe. Many thanks for this.
A pleasure – I’m a third into the first one and it’s a great listen.
It’s probably my prejudice but when I hear or read ‘Essential Mix’ I think of some terminally slick and over produced slab of ‘beats’ smoothed intro-d by an uebercool radioonedeejay. Any mix that has Rufus and Chaka Khan – Ain’t Nobody is doing right by me. Not sure I’d put it right up next to WFL though.
Nice also that someone has put the playlist in the comments.
my Garden mixes are essential
and so are my Skylarking mixes!

shameless mix plug, but hey they might be more interesting and many are certainly cheekier than anything that gets played on R1 like the JMN series
sorry mum
I am on for this as one of the holders of the mix love @jazzjet – had Balance 032 on my year end best
Ofs. More later on. And the Garnier album as my album of the year. Just essential selections or any mix?
Pretty sure we mentioned a David Holmes essential mix cd not so long ago. Anyway, here’s his radio 1 mix of soul and funk tunes (voted mix of the year in ’97 by Muzak magazine, in case you cared).

I’ve seen him DJ this sort of stuff a few times
and seen his techno sets too. Much prefer this sort of thing.
I was going to post exactly that set @pawsforthought instead here’s
John Digweed from 1995
Portishead also 1995
Future Sounds of London from 1993
And a more modern one, Yotto from the C21
And this is a stunning piece of music journalism, possibly the best I’ve ever read about mixing:

Made we want instantly to put my copy of LATLRT very loud
Still on Essential Selection, almost, this contains one of the greatest mix moments ever, Born Slippy into At The River. Jaw dropping.
I could go on…but will leave the unbelievers with a completely different type of mix, this is a quite astonishing (hype I know but it’s worth it) mix through 50 years of minimalism.

Reich, Patrick Moraz, Can, Young Marble Giants, John Carpenter – that’s what I call a banging selection.
The original Essential Mix
