Farewell, maestro. Best concert I ever attended was Ennio at the Royal Albert Hall. He played all the hits, but the two that left me literally gasping with emotion were Abolicao (not one of his most well-known, but a staggering tune) and, of course The Ecstasy of Gold. Here’s the latter being performed in Venice. It’s jaw-dropping.

I’ll raise your Ecstasy of Gold with this one performed by Yo Yo Ma. One of my all time favourite pieces of music, full stop (as I have mentioned numerous times on this place ;-))

An absolute giant of film music. Surely best known in the UK for those unforgettable spaghetti western themes – he will forever be linked to Clint’s ‘man with no name’ character – but his more recent theme for Cinema Paradiso is simply beautiful and a favourite of mine.

Just one of the great ‘modern’ composers. He wrote such beautifully evocative tunes often for very violent films – the juxtoposition was brilliant. The changes in this are magical from Barryesque twangy guitar intro to a gentle waltz time choral section and then the main melody.

Yoyo ma and Chris Botti

This for me. Remember watching it when it was first shown on tv (probably a bit too young) – the whole title sequence is simple but brilliant, and it’s made by the music.

Doubt he or his family care too much what killed him, and a fall may not be a great way to go. RIP, a legend.

One of several shiny ingredients in musical magpies New Order’s ‘Blue Monday’
Chrisf says
One of my first thoughts on seeing this thread was that “I wonder how long it will be before someone mentions Blue Monday nicking the bass line”. And I even bet with myself that it would be you that posted !

That’s a bit tenuous.

Openly admitted by Mr Hook……

Good for him. I don’t hear the association that much. I think he might like to steal but he’s not anywhere near bowie’s filching ‘On Broadway’ and turning it into ‘Golden years.

I have been playing a lot of Morricone lately and had just put The Good, The Bad & The Ugly on this morning when the news alert popped up on my phone. A bit of a spooky moment but unfortunately I do not have any Dominic Cummings records to test whether the magic works again.
When I was a kid, the Man With No Name trilogy had a mythical status, probably because of that theme , and I always wanted to see them. When I eventually saw them on the BBC, his music was one of the main highlights. Same goes for Duck You Sucker and Once Upon A Time in the West.

Without wanting to generalise too much, Italian film composers often have a gift for melody greater than most – Nino Rota, Bruno Nicolai, Riz Ortolani, Piero Umiliani, Pino Donaggio, Piero Piccioni to name but a few, but Morricone was an extraordinary talent even by those standards – this is my favourite piece, from a movie I’ve never seen:

I loved the theme of TGTBTU long before I saw the film. Hit single!
Mrbellows says
I’m in that camp. I don’t think we were allowed to see it when it came out. I believe it was only for adults to view but the music was so great that it seeped into everyone’s consciousness at the time.
Twang says
No. I was 9. My M&D went and my mum said it’s very long and slow and people leave each other out in the desert. True but not accurate.

The obituaries have reminded me of a good bit of trivia. Amongst Morricone’s primary school classmates, circa 1937 or so, was one Sergio Leone. They didn’t have much to do with each other after that, until 1963 when Leone hired a young composer to score his new film. You can easily find their school photo online.
