Jonathan Trott announces his retirement from international cricket – not a surprise, but a sad way to end a distinguished career nevertheless.
A mistake to try and return – esspecially as an opener and not in his preferred number three position?
Echoes of the situation Marcus Trescothwick found himself in a few years ago.

Indeed, not a surprise and he goes with my best wishes. He did a fine job at no 3 for England, so who was the genius who decided that he should play as opener and not try Lyth as an opener in the West Indies. If he was going to play in the Ashes, he was always going to be targeted by the Aussies and to try him as an opener seems daft to me. There seems to be a hell of a lot wrong with the national team at the moment.
The one that baffles me is Jos Buttler. A very talented batsman, so let’s put him in at number eight, where he can bat for, ooh, ten minutes while the tail collapses around him. Pffffttttt.
Actually the one that really baffles me is Peter Moores. If the last couple of years have shown anything in Test cricket, it’s that an excellent coach is vital. Australia went from mediocrity to excellence almost as soon as Lehmann was appointed, early days yet but the WI are looking to be on an upturn again with Phil Simmons and Curtly Ambrose, yet we go back to someone who had already failed once. Pffffffftttt.
Sad to see Trott leave like this as well. Playing someone who is attempting a return after his well documented troubles out of position, and moving him into the most stressful batting spot…..pffffffttt.
The thing about Lehmann is that he’s Australian vs Mickey Arthur the previous coach who’s South African. Those cultural differences seem to make a difference at least with the Australian team.
It’s certainly going to be a tough twelve months with NZ and the Aussies at home followed by Pakistan and SA in the winter.
Get rid of Moores, bring Pietersen back at No.3 and get Ballance to open with Cook.
To be fair in five out of the last six innings he has just about been an opener given Trott’s form.
It’s only a matter of time for King Kev to return…
Please no.
The man’s poison. He should really be a tennis player, then he wouldn’t have to put up with team mates who aren’t as good as he is. (in his mind, anyway).
Time to look forward, not back.
Many things wrong with this tour.
Taking uncapped players and not giving them a game. Terrible team selection in general. A chairman who can’t keep his mouth shut. Trott and Broad’s batting (as Swann says, hard though it may be, Trott looks more and more like a sympathy pick). Stokes’ bowling. Now we may have a very conservative new “head”.
It’ll be a long summer at this rate. We’re years behind the game.
Well, I’ll go along with getting rid of Moores. Promoting Ballance to open would be just a big a mistake as putting Trott up there was. GB has never opened in his life, don’t start now! Adam Lyth should play, as he should have played in this series. He deserves the chance on form alone.
I still don’t see that there is room for Stokes and Jordan in the same team, it should be one or the other, although both have lots of work to do. If they are not going to play Adil Rashid, then I suppose Tredwell is the best we’ve got. Moeen isn’t ready to be the front line spinner.
It will be interesting to see what happens if Strauss gets the job over Vaughan. I would have preferred the latter; a much better captain and I get the impression that he’s the tough character that’s needed at the top. We need a bit of a shake-up in how we play the game and on TMS Vaughan has always come over well. I have nothing against Strauss, he seems like a decent chap, but suspect he’s been picked because he’s more establishment. I hope I’m wrong.
Read recently that Jason Gillespie had knocked back coach of Sth Australia job in anticipation of getting the England coaching job.
Some people are reading too much into it, Junior. He’s happy at Yorkshire, we’re happy with him in charge. He’s going to coach the Adelaide franchise in the Big Bash next winter, but wasn’t interested in the job with the 4 day squad.
I reckon Vaughan might end up being relieved that he missed out on the new job. With a tough summer and winter ahead he might be happier keeping his role in the media.
The Trott fiasco is a case in point. How could he be thrown back in to the team in the foreign role as an opener? It seems to be forgotten that as well as the much publicised mental issues in Australia, there was a bigger problem with his technique. How a team like England, with it’s plethora of backroom staff and coaches, could allow him to play the 3 Tests in the Caribbean with such obvious technical flaws as those he displayed beggars belief.
We seem no closer to getting a front line spinner than we were when Swann retired, so it is hard to see a bright future over the next year.
My three pennies worth.
Sad, but predictable, end for Trott. I hope he continues in county cricket and scores many hundreds for years to come (much like Trescothwick).
Can’t see Pietersen returning. He needs to score massively in the county game just to be considered. Past reputations should mean nothing. He needs to improve his fielding as well.
Stokes, Jordan and Ali all need to work on their bowling. I know it’s early in the season but “potential” won’t win the Ashes. England need a 5 man attack all guns blazing.
I can’t help thinking that if Swann had played in the Windies England would have won 3-0. He’s such a huge loss.
Looks like Vaughan’s got the job. I think that will be good for England cos he’s English. But fuck, what a chaotic situation for the country that invented the game in the first place!
