I forget who it was but I remember seeing a band in the 80s who had a good show at somwhere like Hammersmith Odeon. They did an encore – which I am sure was planned/expected and then went off. The house lights went up and then after a good 10 minutes they cane on again for a second encore. So we came back in again. After the second encore finished I left, convinced that it really was over. But I heard from some other people that they came on again but to a crowd of a few dozen. A treat for diehard fans? Perhaps – but this kind of thing annoys me. I’m not sure if New Order still have a no encore rule – but I must say I find the whole ritual rather tiresome. I think one encore is the best way to go because some concertgoers find that fun. Do it once – perhaps two songs and then bugger off.
If I really think about it my beef was more that the houselights came on but they still did an encore. A total breach of gig etiquette.
What did you think about this very important issue?
