Seems to be a particularly strong selection at the moment from Emusic, possibly as the majors shrink and more and more artists make the kind of recording deals they can pick up. I have on my to-download list new albums from:
Pet Shop Boys
Primal Scream
James
M83
Explosions In The Sky
Joe Bonamassa
Black Mountain
Yeasayer
The Field
Bob Mould
And recent downloads have included:
Polica
Basia Bulat
Bloc Party
School of Seven Bells
Cavern of Anti Matter
Emma Polloock
Nazca Lines
Shearwater
Tindersticks
Not sure what the long-term business model for mp3s is, it’s telling they have recently introduced their own streaming/playlists app. But all power to their elbow while they can keep going.
Ooops forgot the new Mogwai too, Atomic.
Not forgetting the recent Lucinda Williams and Eleanor Friedberger…. and M.Ward….and the final Richmond Fontaine album. I’d agree that it’s been a lot easier to use up my 90 downloads in recent months. I stumbled across the lastest Carrie Rodrigues album yesterday as well that I somehow missed a couple of months ago.
Indeed, e music have just kept on giving for a while now. Just wish they had a better search section than picking a name, any name. OK, works for brand new, but back catalogue hides very deep sometimes.
It does help to give it that vibe of a vast, badly arranged record shop though.
it does indeed – probably unintentional too – but I’ve found some incredible stuff on there that I’d never have come across otherwise. I like it as a ‘taking a punt’ option and the subscription model and the limited catalogue just encourages you to dig deep. I’m not sure how it survives post Spotify/Apple Music but I suspect it has a loyal customer base of diehard eMusic heads like me who love having a monthly quota of weirdly random music discovery
Interesting to know how many are on grandfathered accounts from a decade back – like most here- and how many subscribed in the last few years since the rise of streaming. Wikipedia says 400,00 subscribers
I have a contract for 42 tracks a month. Yesterday I downloaded Black Mountain and Besnard Lakes. I note I have another 75 albums ‘saved for later’. I can recommend checking out Rich Hopkins who had. Rootsy Tom Petty-ish sound.
Bloody predictive text. For ‘Had’ read ‘has a’
