Haven’t read it yet, I’m on the dog, but a few talking points here, I’ll be bound.

Musings on the byways of popular culture
As I said, I’m on the phone…
An impossible task but irresistable – we all love a list, especially here. I’m amazed at how many of those albums I own – the man’s got taste!
As I recall, Elton John was mightily annoyed by this list at the time, probably because he wasn’t on it. But it’s OK, they’re great pals now… (Elton produced EC’s TV series)
I hadn’t clocked that this was actually over 14 years old…I wonder why it suddenly popped up now? It would be interesting to make a Spotify playlist, though I might draw the line at 8 vols of Anthologie de la Musique Arabe…
Re: Costello and EJ
And when Elvis and Elton finally got together to do a duet on that “Spectacle” TV series, they played a song highlighted in Elvis’s List of 500: David Ackles’s brilliant “Down River”.
I’m amazed to see Italian reggae band Almamegretta there. They’re friends of friends of mine from Naples. Last time they played near me I went backstage. The fog of weed smoke was overwhelming!
D’ya know what? I think it’s a great list: his tastes cross over into mine heavily. I know nowt about classical, but feel I may now have a place to start. A few conceits/music snob motifs add to the joy, as I am have many too, that I believe in entirely, even against proof to the contrary.
But I wouldn’t have Abba in the house.
I’m surprised there are so many “Best Of” albums.
Gary, when I was in Naples a few years back I managed to find a decent record shop. Almamegretta was one of the bands they suggested to me. Rather good too. You move in exalted circles!
Doesnt like Sting does he.? No mention of Diana Krall, although it was 14 years ago.
On the other hand, Elvis’s previous partner, Cait O’Riordan, gets a look-in with “A Man You Don’t Meet Every Day”
I’m told they’re quite pally with Massive Attack, hence the occassional use of Italian in Massive Attack songs (“Mi chiamo 3D, si, sono inglese, no sunshine in my life ’cause the way I deal is hazy”).
