Dry July is a concept by which we measure our pain. No seriously, it’s a thing here in Australia – is it in the UK and other places? You swear off alcohol for a month and donate $ to a charity, not quite sure how that works and I don’t bother with that part of it. For me it’s about laying off the grog for a time and taking care of my liver. I did it last year and lasted 20 days, here we are just over halfway through the month and I’m going OK. Enjoying the clear head in the evening and better sleep at night. I’m not sure I’ll make it to the 31st, but if I can improve on last year I’ll be happy.
Anyway I was wondering
1. If anyone else is doing this, and
2. If you’ve ever done one of these monthly things – here we have “Movember” where you grow a moustache and again donate to a charity. No way am I doing that.

We it appears have two months, Go Sober for October, for Macmillan Cancer Supprt and Dry January (Alcohol Concern)
We have Movember too, a group of us at school did it one year, voted for the best one by the whole school and shaved them off on stage. There is photographic proof somewhere, no you can’t see it.
Never felt the need to do it again.

Fuck that. I have a very nice bottle of Auchentoshan to help me through my 2 weeks of quarantine, and I’ve already opened it, so too late. Anyway, I’ve been drinking like a fish since the beginning of July, so what can you do?

Dry January is the thing over on this side of the planet. It seems on add choice, to have people change habits in a way that will feel like deprivation for the coldest, darkest, most miserable time of the year. I think people get sponsored to raise funds. I just stick to a fairly, but not completely strict rule of no booze on a school night through the year.

Well yes, it’s the middle of winter here in July. The thought of a nice Barossa Valley Shiraz to warm the cockles – oh be gone you evil thoughts…

Me too on the none on a school night rule. Mind you, I left school in 1979.

Before I retired that was my rule.
Friday nights, Saturdays and Sundays only, unless I was going to a midweek gig, when I was allowed a couple of beers if the bar was in the same room as the stage.

Retired from drinking? Good move

Just realised I actually left school in 1975. 1975 – 1980 I drank so much my lifetime averages are still dodgy……

We’re on Mon – Thurs AFDs then Friday and the weekend for grog, though sparingly on Sunday. Full disclosure, I cracked last night and had a glass of vino but I felt very peaky and fancied a little lift. As far as I’m concerned this is good enough.
I raised 400 quid for Movember by growing a big biker style tach a few years ago which looked rather good actually – someone at work commented that Movember is supposed to make you look stupid not cooler.

What a legend! I did Movember but what I grew was the wrong colour and I’ve never gone back to facial hair. If memory serves I think I managed to raise about £83 for good causes.

Nearly always do dry Jan, and normally one other month. Sept probably. Weekday drinking is out (inc Sunday), if I relapse on a Wed then I take Fri or Sat off.
Did Movember once as a company thing, raised far more money than anyone else and then it never happened again. And since we were taken over by a large American company the fun aspect here has gone somewhat. Work, work, work!!!

I’ve done Dry January for 35 years, mostly as an annual test because my father was a card-carrying alcoholic. In my younger days I used to make a point of being out every single night of December between London and Christmas in Dublin so January was a good time to recover. Besides there tended to be very little on. I’ve stuck with the no alcohol thing strictly through weddings, funerals and guest list free bars. I never feel particularly healthier for it. I’m not sure whether that’s a good or bad thing.
I did Movember once. My beard had many colours but immediately under my nose were two suspicious looking white lines. An unexpected side effect was that I became more assertive in a manly way, twice shushing loudmouths at quiet gigs very effectively where I might usually mutter under my breath and put up with it.

Yeah, it’s a real nuisance how, if you want to maintain a ‘tache, you need to be ever so tidy with your cocaine consumption..

I thought this was a thread about a girl I used to go out with.
