I like my pop stars to be auro-didact intellectuals who are big fans of music, and accidentally fell into rock n roll (however defined). It used to be common back it the days of books, and going to events rather than watching them on screens. Having a cultural hinterland is now less common, and the musical genre is the hinterland, which sabotages the fresh blood of new or different ideas slipping in. Entertainment may continue, but an artist encapsulating a number of sensibilities and remaining engaged in artistic curiousity … Far fewer than before.
