The recent article in the Atlantic contains a number of corroborated reports of Trump’s attitude to war veterans and his challenging of the nation’s unquestioning attitude to previous wars and conflicts.
He avoided military service as a young man and is seemingly perplexed over why on earth a young person would give up their life for their country? I mean…what’s in it for them?
Interestingly, Fox News has backed up the article and provided further evidence of his disdain for people like McCain and Bush Senior who actually saw military action and lived to tell the tale.
On this one, I think Fox News has decided that backing Trump on this issue is against the mood of the nation and provides them with a credible lifeline if there is a change in the White House in November. Weasels, the lot of them – but if it helps to get him out of there, GO Fox News!
His alleged description of war prisoners and the dead as “losers” is appalling and thick. Disrespecting those that were in active service is also reprehensible.
He is naive to think that his own popularity will override the innate patriotism of the American people. “Thank you for your service” is said to military people in shops and cafes all the time.
I am all for jumping on any bandwagon that lays into the ridiculous old twat but as a lifelong pacifist I do tend to agree with some of his positions.
Would I have tried to avoid National Service? Yes.
Would I have avoided active service in Vietnam? Yes.
If this is the issue that loses him the election then that’s great. It’s also possible that this episode also raises questions over how we treat those people that were pointlessly killed or injured for their country. You can salute/wear a poppy all you want but the best way to honour them is to look after them and then never, ever, do it again.
