The big man has died. Perhaps better known as a writer of great soul music (just ask Aretha), his songs liven up every party. He had a great ‘gutbucket’ voice. It makes perfect sense that his backing group were called The Goodtimers.
Let’s celebrate the joy the man liked to spread by posting your favourites. I’ll start with the obvious one, See Saw.

But he seems great – will explore in detail: many thanks!

His first three albums are well worth checking out (Mercy!, See Saw and The House Of The Blue Lights).

Not his song (for a change), but perhaps the best version of a great Allen Toussaint song.

In fact, The House Of The Blue Lights, from 1969, is an overlooked gem. Recorded with The Jefferson Lemon Blues Band it provided the template of a sleazy, blues sound for Layla and the Jimmy Miller Stones. It’s quite some distance from the party soul of Stax. Certainly, Ron Wood was listening. After Don’s stroke, he participated in a tribute album to help raise some cash.

Alias, how nice to see you back!
Due to it being Carnival I’ve been listening to quite a lot of Latin music this week. Which made me think of your enormous knowledge of that field.
Things are looking very promising for the maiden voyage of the good ship Afterword.

It’s great to be back. I shall head over to your excellent Carnival thread and contribute.
