I wonder it there are as many song and album titles I suspect there are including the word ‘dog’. And if there are, what does this say about western civilisation? Perhaps it is even the animal species that is most mentioned in this way?
I’ll kick off with a few diverse examples as we begin to investigate this phenomenon.
How much is that doggie in the window?
I wanna be your dog
Walking the dog
Does “Puppy Love” count?
It’ll pass
But ‘bitch’ is only allowed if it refers to a canine not a human.
swank ylno dog
But if you intended to have an “a” in “swank”, shouldn’t you then change the “k” to a “g” ?
Having chewed that over, think you have a point
Good call!
Dog Eat Dog
There’s several artists done a song called that, but I suspect only one of them has also recorded Coyote.
Stiff Little Fingers – Straw Dogs
Pink Floyd – The Dogs Of War
Cat Stevens – I Love My Dog
Lobo – Me and You and a Dog Named Boo
The Boxer
Melon Collie and the Infinite Sadness
Ruff Justice
Bowowow
Johnny Be Good Boy
Radio Wag Wag
Sorry, pushing the boundaries too much. I’ll have to disqualify your submissions.
Dog Man Star
Hound dog
Rock and roll dalmation
Hit the road Jack Russell
Canine to five
Whippet by Devo
Aargh! Okay, anything to do with dogs then.
It’s the AfterWord way, @chinstroker
Diamond Dogs
Fall Dog Bombs The Moon
I Wouldn’t Treat A Dog (The Way You Treated Me)
Does Lassie Lie Near Me (trad. Scottish) cut the mustard?
Pig Dog Daddy: Boiled in Lead….. “Do the boogaloo”
Bird dog Everly Brothers.
Old Dog Blue: David Johansen
Then of course there’s the ones about dogs but don’t mention dog: Old Shep
How about Rin Tin Tin Machine?
T. Rex
Shep Woolley
Old Yeller Magic Orchestra
Let’s also not forget the Woof Trade record label
There’s always Cujo Boxers…
… or if you prefer Canine Inch Nails.
Collar Blunstone
Wag Not Wag
The Beautiful Snout
Dane Fogleberg
Houndgarden.
Chihuahua! Heat.
Spaniel Johnston
The Lurchers
Flippin’ eck Tucker… “Chihuahua! Heat” has floored me. Can’t beat that.
Lead singer of Great White was called Jack Russell.
Busy man he kept wicket for England 50 odd times too.
Dogs and indeed Dogs Part 2 by the Who…
I have quite a few albums by the excellent Aussie band ‘Dog Trumpet’
Tull (in their Dire Straits phase) – Dogs in the Midwinter…
Their Dire phase
IMHO it’s a very good album.
I’d pretty much given up on them by CoaK
they won a Grammy for it though
Green On Red – Hair Of The Dog; does that qualify?
The Dogs Meat Man: Thomas Hudson (a music hall song though technically it’s about a man)
Anyone for Barkness on the Edge of Town? Anyone? Nobody?
Prancing In The Park?
The Wild, The Innocent & The E-Street Muzzle.
Pavlov’s Dog, a great but sadly neglected band.
Hmmm…that rings a bell.
Arf!
Woof!
I stumbled across Kathleen Edwards Dogs and Alcohol only a few weeks ago.
Bands, The Winery Dogs and Riverdogs had self titled debut albums.
‘Mutt’ Lange produced a fair few records as well.

Track Dogs contain at least one member with extravagant whiskers on their muzzle.
Me and you and a dog named Boo
…then there’s this…
Love Me Love My Dog by the original Alvin Stardust, Pete Shelley, not the Buzzcocks one.
Didn’t Cat Stevens love his dog?
Uncertain if Rabbit had views on Fish. Or, for that matter, Fish on Rabbit. We know Budgie liked Horse.
Black Dog
Black Eyed Dog
I can’t hear Black Dog without thinking of Ana Matronix in a van.
The Dog, the Dog, He’s at it Again
Blind Dog at St Dunstan’s by Caravan (as coined by Noel Coward – I’ll let someone else elaborate on the story behind the phrase)
Coward to his niece on seeing two dogs in the ‘act’
“The doggie in front has suddenly gone blind and the other one has very kindly offered to push him all the way to St Dunstan’s.”
However why is it a ‘Blind Dog AT St Dunstan’s’?
Good one.
Anything by Billy Bragg, The Bard of Barking.
Not to mention the whole genre, if that’s the right word, of Poodle Rock.

*pulls finger out of ear*
Wild Rover
“René and Georgette Magritte with their dog after the war” – Paul Simon
One of my favourite Manics songs.
They also did “Damn Dog” which is from a film I think, but it’s nowhere near as good.
Oh and on the silly front, Spaniel by Elton John, and Terrier by Twinkle spring(er) to mind.
Will keep an eye out for the inevitable “Cat” thread over the weekend.
Drowned Dog Black Night.
Think this one is ostensibly about a greyhound.
My Girl by the Hoodoo Gurus. Great song too.
Warrens not-at-all cynical ode to the record business…
Massive Attack – Danny The Dog
Anything by Joe Cocker-poo.
We’re All Off To Sunny Spain-iel (translated) by Sylvia Vrethammar

Here are a couple of my favourite dog sub-genre….dog demise https://youtu.be/RVcPwwqAEgQ?si=7Y4XJoQj9AnBYsNy
And this!
Old Shep
I can’t see the word Shep without immediately saying “get down” . Must be my age……
Never mind these no hits, nobodies, what about the greatest pooch performers? The Beagles.
Alsatian Divorce by Steely Dog
Unfortunately, for all of our furry chums, the day must come. (I was waiting for this one on Sunday but it never arrived..)
(Japanese Breakfast – In Hell)
Bravo all. Do I get some dog food in my hamper?
Forgot to mention my favourite example: How come my dog don’t bark when you come around? (Dr John)
@chinstroker
I hate to spoil your planned enjoyment of your hamper, but…
Did you hear about the dyslexic agnostic insomniac who woke up every night wondering if there was a dog?……………..I’ll get my coat.
God Dog: The Incredible String Band
Or Dog God if they are the subject of the “joke”

Chi Wah Wah – George Harrison
Happy Jackal – The Who

A couple from recent releases

and older ones..
Alberto Y Lost Trios Paranois – Old Trust
The Damned – The Dog
Richard Dawson – Dead Dog in an Alleyway
The Selecter – My Collie (Not A Dog)
Not so many songs with cats in the title…
But why, I ask? There must be a reason why other tame animals don’t get mentioned as much as dogs do. The human/canine relationship would seem to be profound.
Well, quite: and, of course, my comment was made as someone who shares their house with a cat.
The cat threatened you until you made that comment didn’t it?
Well, we had an exchange of views – but no actual threat…
Sticking strictly to the ones containing “Dog”, I have a lengthy list of song titles. As there are over a hundred posts in the thread now, I’m disinclined to check which ones have already been mentioned.

Good grief. This has now far surpassed my expectations. Could there be more dog songs than love songs!
A thread containing just songs called Hair of the Dog would still be pretty busy.
Green on Red get my vote but the Nazareth and Bauhaus ones are bangers too. And I bet there are a few more.
