It’s the word game de nos jours. Highly addictive, an enjoyable 5 minutes of fun every day. I love the fact that it’s not trying to sell me anything, it’s a very simple construct, and it is necessary to wait 24 hours for the next puzzle. It’s also very Afterword in its concept – does exactly what it says on the tin.
In case you’re wondering, I’ve solved 14 words in 14 days, one after two attempts (luck, not skill), 3 after 3 attempts, and the majority after 4.
https://www.powerlanguage.co.uk/wordle/
I’m afraid today’s word put my nose out of joint when I didn’t get the point.
Applause!!
Yep – another fan here. I’ve been doing for about a week and have 7/7 so far with the majority in 4 or 5 tries.
Thing is though we are all doing in the house and its getting a bit competitive – who can get in the least try etc
That’s an almost identical result profile to mine. I like that everyone plays the same game, so people share the censored results in social media (to the despair of those who don’t play), and because there is one word a day every day it only takes a few minutes instead of trying to draw the player in to adverts with ‘rewards’.
Not very good at it, but got today’s in 4.
First go today – 4 attempts to crack it.
Intrigued and will keep going now
This is certainly making wavs on Facebook with people posting their results.
Thanks for explaining it.
I wanted to know more and the Wiki entry was very useful. I learnt that the game uses US spellings e.g. favor not favour.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wordle_(video_game)
And no one makes any money out of it!
https://www.theguardian.com/games/2022/jan/04/wordle-why-inventor-of-fiendishly-addictive-online-game-doesnt-want-your-money
There was much pearl-clutching when the first US spelling came up, even though since the inventor was American it was bound to happen.
He’s from Wales but lives in New York and devised it for his American partner.
Me too, 13/13, 8 of them in 4, 1 in 3, 2 in 5, 2 in 6. Mysteriously, my best and current streak is 10, yet I haven’t lost any out of 13.
Only annoyance is that your record doesn’t travel with you – you seem to have to be someone else on your phone. Unless anybody knows better?
I’d never heard of it before today and now it’s everywhere. Seeing how popular it is I think I might have a look but deny doing so in order to maintain an attitude of haughty superiority and aloof smugness, which I’m very much looking forward to.
Aloof smugness. Asmoof lugness. Bismuth bigness. A smooth budgie. Loofah Tubman. Ahooo Werewolves of London.
As you were.
I do. And you can copy your result to social media to show everyone how lovely and clever you are.*
As I’ve been doing for a week or so. I might stop that now because it makes my feed look a bit tiresome.
It’s a good little wheeze of a game though.
*Happily it doesn’t blow the game for others and show the answer. All it is is a graphic representation of how many goes it took.
That’s my one and only beef with Wordle. Nice that it’s free and not ad-supported. Rather tiresome when your FB feed gets fuller every day of people’s Wordlebrags.
I’m an awful show off. My friends – including some fine souls here – aren’t. It must cheese a bit.
Well, maybe you should wash it more.
Yep. Great fun.
I add an element of competition by doing it on the toilet in the morning. Which can you finish first?
At my age, usually the word.
Ah, a chance to repeat my under-appreciated joke from the books thread: Wordle with your turdle.
It was a slow burner, but deserves a big hand. 👏 👏 👏
Wordle 214 3/6
⬛🟨⬛⬛🟨
🟩⬛⬛🟩🟩
🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩
Played 17, 6 after 3 goes, 6 after 4 goes, 5 after 5 goes
I always start with the same word.
So do I, though I’ve recently changed it thanks to a suggestion for a better one from Our Friend on the Mekong.
I go with TEARS – the three most used consonants and two most used vowels.
FEAST or MOIST.
Oho*
*On loan from MTM
I changed from GREAT to TEARS this week (and probably not for the last time).
STERN, on the basis that there are far more consonants to parse, and I can evacuate my vowels in the second word.
Or possibly PARSE.
IMHO using the same word to start with is not Corinthian. Even worse is using two unrelated words for your first two guesses.
No doubt there’s a method which means you can solve it every day in three goes. Bah and humbug.
ps my only “2” so far was “favor” ..go figure
I always start with STARE which of course is an anagram of TEARS.
Fluked it second go today. Might have to buy a lottery ticket.
I use STARE, which is much better than TEARS.
As of today, played 12, won 12 (five 3s, three 4s, four fives, so nyer).
I’ve played 11 with a 100% streak. Two 2s, one 3, four 4s, three 5s & one 6.
I start with a different word every day.
My old pal Ben has been using his programming skills to come up with some Wordle Tools.
Work in progress.
http://www.bennewsam.co.uk/Words/WordleTools.shtml
Now I’m a player, I’m planning on starting each with PINTS
(you can sense where my thoughts and priorities lie)
ARSED
I do now. I started with APPLE and got it in 3. But I can see that APPLE is not a great start word though.
Better than APPAL, though.
It took me a few goes to realise that letters could be repeated.
You were not alone there.
As I have since discovered And not always in pairs.
Yeah, that can catch a person out.
Got it in three today- lucky with my second guess.
Personally I haven’t been tempted, but I did have a go on https://sweardle.com a couple of times.
Much easier as it only uses 4-letter words, and even then only a reduced subset of 4-letter words.
PISS in 2. Hurrah!
It’s basically a word version of the classic 70s game Mastermind. I’ve played 13 and managed to get them all even that very tricky one two days ago. Today was my first time getting it in two. My go to starter words are raise, arise or naive although I vary it a bit.
Oooh, Mastermind…. that chimed in my memory banks there… I remember that game. I used to think it was connected to the TV show of the same name.
Regarding Wordle, I can’t say I’ve really been tempted. But I do find it fascinating how much it has caught on. Seems like EVERYONE is doing it at times. Kudos to the inventor, particularly as they haven’t felt the need to plaster it with ads or cash-in (although, as is the way with these things, I’m sure that will come).
I don’t mind puzzles as such, but it occurs to me that you could potentially write a computer program that would complete this more effectively and consistently than any human, just by targeting common words and vowels and working out probabilities and all that. (Not meaning to imply that I could write such a program: way beyond my capabilities! Need to make that clear). But you know what I mean? As soon the notion hits me that “a computer could do this better than me” then I tend to switch off. I’m probably the opposite of competitive. I’m relentlessly defeatist.
I wrote a version of Mastermind back in “the day” that I was very proud of at tbe time. Don’t look for it on your app store, this ran on Windows 3.1
Wordle sounds a bit shit to me if it’s just a cross between Mastermind and Hangman
I got really into it, so I downloaded a fake version, WhatWord, where you can play as much as you want. I’ve turned out to be slightly better at WhatWord than I am at Wordle, which considering they’re the same game is a bit annoying.
Apparently, ‘soare’ is the best start word — whichever version you play.
That’s my starter. But I like the look of TEARS from @chiz.
I used STARE today, previously I’d used rouse.
IRATE can be good
I start with BEACH because I find it a bit cheering.
I use a different starter word every time. Whatever is in front of me when I sit at the table. Today was ‘sauce’. Previously used ‘table’ ‘apron’ ‘plant’ ‘chair’, etc.
*Hamper for Mr. Shaker.
I do OK – I start with TRADE and if that doesn’t strike gold, my second one is BONUS.
Ironic that these winning words represent the exact opposite of what’s happening in Brexit Britain – yes indeed ladies and gentlemen.
SPOILER: Today’s word is JIHAD.
That really is a spoiler – chrome-plated.
In three this morning MUTHERFUKKAS
So that’s Brain 3 Bowels 1 so far this week
Do please keep us up to date with this, Chiz, I can’t be alone in wondering how it’s going to play out. Perhaps some strong coffee would help?
Could perhaps Chiz post updates as a sticky?
Certainly sounds better than the other way round.
He’s gone very quiet – is he all right in there?
Turdle Update, Friday:
Very bad start, only had a P
Tried an E! and an R! but nothing to show for it
Third effort produced three grey cubes
And by then I’d finished the Wordle.
*polite Rotarian dinner applause”
I’m here, all weak
Very good…
*pushes sandwich to one side*
What with the winnits talk on the Class thread, there’s no avoiding the conclusion -this town is turning into shit.
turning?
Afterwordle.
Big fan
Also enjoy Absurdle, which can be played as often as you like.
– Ignore that it says wordle in the link –
https://qntm.org/files/wordle/index.html
It’s so quiet on here I think Wordle has swallowed up the Afterword.
Good thinking, DCI @Moose the Mooche.
I was trying to figure out why anyone would create such an app where no one will earn any dosh.
Now I’ve got it. It’s a gigantic smokescreen to keep the finest minds in the country occupied, so that they pay less attention to the shenanigans in Westminster.
Spoiler! Today’s word is BORIS.
I found out that there is an archive so you can play all the games you’ve missed.
Today’s word is certainly another name for him.
Or a comment on us?

Got today’s in three, from STARE.
Get in, my son!

I dropped one before feeling like one.
So did I (get it in three, that is).
*attempts arthritic high five with Mike, falls over*
King of my thumbs!
Does nobody appreciate my Shakespearean wit?
You wicked person.
I appreciate it now you’ve pointed it out. Does that count?
Please do not speak of country matters.
That’s a fair thought
Three here as well. Doesn’t normally take me that long in the morning to find it to be honest…
Got it in three today. My first two words were “extra”, and “proud”. I’m thinking of making it into a t-shirt!
Lulsies.
PB for me. In 3 today. Shame people are posting hints and words on this thread.
Why would you come on here before solving your daily Wordle?
I don’t any more, but the way Wordle is working is that people do share their attempts on social media etc in a way that cleverly disguises any of the words/letters attempted.
Yeah, I’ve seen that, and there are a few AWers who do that on FB. Fair play to them, I have done as well, but I recognise and respect Mike_H’s view of it being tiresome, so try not to do it too much any more.
Whereas this AW Wordle thread seems like a perfect enclave to show off and share nerdy wordy puns, which I love.
I just send it to my daughter in our (light hearted) daily competition.
Ok will stay off this thread. Bye everybody, will miss you all.
Oh @Dai! I hope I didn’t chase you off?
Yes @salwarpe all your fault 😉
Have you gone yet, Dai?
A stigma I will have to bear till my dying day.
(I thought flounces were a Facebook thing).
Four today. Made me grimace.
Not once, not twice, nor thrice, but…
May the fource be with you.
Four is the magic number
😬 I’m telling Dai you said that
you are a sneke and i diskard you uterly chiz
Made it in 2 today and not a guess due to getting 2 letters place correct and one in wrong place.
There’s an Italian versh too. https://pietroppeter.github.io/wordle-it/. I find it really hard even though my Italian’s pretty fluent and all the words end in vowels. Today’s answer is “disto”. I got it in four but had no idea what it meant until I looked it up. To be distant, apparently. Translation site https://context.reverso.net/translation/italian-english/disto helpfully provides the example “Neanc e la b la n tte disto lie questi mes aggeri dal loro dovere” which means “No glom of nit can stay these mes engers abot their duty.”. So I’ll be using that.
Got the word today in four despite a very scant knowledge of Italian.
All the words end in a vowel – Australian Wordle.
See also the Spanish version, el Wordle-o.
… and the Welsh – Wyrdll.
And the Kenneth Williams version: Nurdle.
And the Dorset version – Durdle.
Today’s (Mon 24th) is AN ABSOLUTE BASTARD and took me five shaming goes, narrowly avoiding that dreaded bottom rung. Tell you what it is, though but, I think he’s onto us with that TEARS combo. I do. Bastard.
3 for me, he said smugly
And just to add once more, I start with a brand new 5 letter word each day cos to do it any other way is what Boris Johnson would do ie cheat
‘Oo’s a gubboy den? ‘OO’SAGUBBOYDEN? YOU ARE! Yes, you are! Ooooooo!
You need to listen to more Cocteau Twins, bluebell.
5 here too. I had 3 letters on line 2, one in the right place, but it was still tricky. I think I’ll start with JIGGY tomorrow…
I got it on the last possible attempt. I never want to go through that again.
We’re here for you. Have a hug, big guy.
Thanks.
OK
OK.
That’s enough now.
I said that’s ENOUGh.
Bloody hell.
*sulks*
No glom of nit can stay these mes engers abot their duty.
Onto us, you say? It’s a conspiracy!
Alas, my hilarious reference to that day’s word – KNOLL – fell on stony ground.
As did my Cocteau reference, above
It’s a sare fecht and no mistake.
Boris Johnson would deny he’d ever played Wordle.
Or if he inadvertently had, he hadn’t realised at the time that it was Wordle.
He explained all the rules of Wordle carefully to 65 million people, then didn’t play it because nobody had told him the rules.
First time today, started with ROADS, got it on the 4th line.
I was in DEEP TROUBLE after 2 lines today, floundering about without a gameplan, thanks to a couple of shite guesses.
But I’ve gotta say that I turned it around in stylish fashion, romping confidently to the solution on line 4. It certainly brightened up a dull Monday, anyway.

Oh… light my fire, man!
Got three cubes from TEARS but ended up still taking four goes.
You should be using STARE, like me.
Who RATES that?
Me. I got it second go after a brief STARE. 😀
I would’ve used it but I was brought down by a TASER.
I couldn’t be ARSET*
(*) say it out loud
ar-set …. arrrrrr-set … nope. Still not getting it.
Maybe a prayer to St Rea will help.
Yesterday’s was an absolute bastard !
Yesterday’s is so yesterday.
It was. Not sure I’d have got it without a ‘JFK’ clue from a mate.
It was KNOLL. Knoll knoll knoll knoll. KNOLL. After 24 hours it isn’t a spoiler any more.
In four today (26th) – should have been three but I was a bit out of sync.
(I don’t see why there’s any need to start with a different word when you’ve found one you like – it’s like opening a chess game with e4 – perfectly Corinthian.)
My thinking is get 10 quite common letters in the arena and you’re more likely to get it.
Once, my opening word was quite close to the solution so I didn’t bother with the second one.
Three. I was mildly synced – had the final 3 letters on 2 but took a wrong turn.
I started with DOUBT for a change. That was a mistake. So I’m ignoring that one and calling today a three
Try BURQA tomorrow, chiz.
Good advice. It’s bitter out.
“I’ll get me burqa”
What’s the best word for guaranteeing zero return on your first guess? I’m saying it’s QUILL
SYZYGY

Good point. I loved the word so much I didn’t stop to count.

Read somewhere that Willie Wordle (think that’s his name) says anybody who gets it in one or two is lucky and that’s not the point. Feel far more satisfied with a four or a five cos that means you had your brain working for a few minutes.
Apparently somebody has already crunched the numbers and the worldwide average is 3.84.
I don’t even bother actually doing it anymore. I just google “today’s wordle answer” first thing every morning..
I’m surprised you can manage that, Gar! At your age.
Yes, in those crossword puzzle books I just look at the answers at the back and write them in.
Rofl.
Wasn’t there a story about some bloke on a commuter train who supposedly did the Times crossword vey quickly every day, only to confess at some point that he just put in random words (and letters), just to troll people?
I’ve heard that as a thing to do when waiting to be interviewed with rivals. Exchange pleasantries, whip out The Times and breezily complete the cryptic crossword in the manner you suggest.
Wheels come off if someone asks what the answer was for 12 down.:..? I could probably write a whole episode of Terry and June based on this.

Well done, apparently there are 12 possible words that have those last 4 letters so some luck would be involved.
Yes. Got it wrong twice, got the right one on the 5th row.
I got caught out with this one. Last four letters correct on the second line and still failed! A lateral thinker would have figured it out but I just kept trying possible first letters until I ran out of road. I had a run of 24 days as well. I fucking hate Wordle…
In NZ the new Wordle clicks over at exactly midnight. Is that the same everywhere else?
“Yes” he says with misplaced overconfidence.
Midnight in Blighty too. (Our midnight.) The site has a .co.uk address, so it must be local time everywhere.
Also at the oasis, presumably.
It’s all over.
“It’s all over.” Not necessarily. Well, not for a while, anyway.

Second miserable 5 in a row. As Mike says, even if it stays free it won’t be the same on NYT
I have the NYT sudoku bookmarked and go straight to it without any unwanted importunings from others “on the game”. Fret not.
I’m a NYT subscriber (€3 a month), play Spelling Bee most days. Then I flick to the Arts Reviews and Cooking and 33 other rabbit holes. I don’t want Wordle there as well!!
I just went to Spelling Bee for the first time. The letters for today are MOYHGL and all words must use T and be over 3 letters long.

I note chiz has quietly backed out, hoping nobody would notice, after getting the Cone Of Shame for cheating on 243 and scoring a disastrous 7/6 on 244.
I think the place has a leaner, more streamlined look that I’m liking a lot.
Close! I got 6/6 yesterday but lost my 45 day streak this morning. Fun while it lasted.

Once again, we have cheap, showy guesswork masquerading as accomplishment. Give me an honest four or five any day.
In my email this morning to all my friends (where all = 3) I added a postscript
“Actually a guess on 2 is nowhere near as rewarding as a triumph on 5”
This does you enormous credit, Lodey.

Caulk and shake seem to have been the controversial ones recently, for different reasons. Not sure if it really has got more difficult. FWIW, my average has gone up from 3.8 after 10 goes to 4 after 40.

The offensive words include slave, lynch and wench apparently. Lynch would be a tricky one.
Black, white, spade, honky, woman, and manly are also deemed offensive. It’s Health & Safety gone mad.
Meanwhile, on Twitter…
“I got today’s in 4 but I tentatively put it in thinking “surely not??” I really didn’t know what else it could be with the letters I had left. It’s not fun any more.”
This is a fair assessment, from the Graun
“To complete the puzzle in four guesses seems to be the par score for Wordle. Doing it in three is a jolt of satisfaction, in two is smugly pleasurable, and in one is pure luck. But failing to do it within the allotted six is a wretched study in self-recrimination.”

The problem is with chiz is credibility, frankly. Ever since that bad business where he used other chaps’ work to finagle a deuce, one can’t help but raise an eyebrow at his “run of good luck.”
He finagled a deuce? That’ll look bad on his DBS form….
Actually I’ve finagled a couple of 1/6’s out of the oh-so-clever clues HP leaves lying around. It’s not my fault he’s up 11 hours before I am.
“Oh-so-clever” – Love the Dai meta reference.
Is anyone else finding that looking at other people’s graphical word map things and trying to figure out their path to Wordle enlightenment is almost as absorbing as yer actual Wordle itself?
Are we still doing this?

@Mike – I think we’ll see the weak-willed, the cheaters, the showboaters and the bandwagon jumpers fall by the wayside. Those noble souls with commitment to the cause will endure. Silently keeping to the true path without expectations of gratitude or celebrity, for no other reason than to do a Good Thing, no matter how small, how seemingly pointless, how perhaps profligate with the precious and diminishing resource of time allotted to us in these, the final days of Human Civilisation on this dear and sadly abused planet home we share. We shall Wordle until the End of the Worldle.

Ten minutes! Luxury!
I only started my Wordle trip yesterday, got a 4 and was quite pleased with myself. Unfortunately I hadn’t realised that the same letter can appear twice. So after 4 tries today I was faced with a word that only had one vowel in it, one commonly used consonant letter, and the rest to be made up from consonants that mainly get a big score in scrabble. I resorted to google which pointed out the error of my ways. I’d have been a long time staring at it otherwise

I have a modest proposal. Since @boneshaker is heading for a sixth undelivered hamper, and has clearly given up any attempt at thread curation, shall we start a new thread just for the tight little band of us sheltering in the basement?
