I have never had so many albums on pre-order:
Ryley Walker – Golden Sings That Have Been Sung,
Agnes Obel – Citizens Of Glass,
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds – Skeleton Tree,
The Beatles – Live At Hollywood Bowl,
Pixies – Head Carrier,
The Handsome Family – Unseen,
David Bowie – Who Can I Be Now? box.
How about you?

Riley Walker and Nick Cave.
Was sorely tempted to pre order the Marc Almond box but after watching him massacre Starman at the Proms I changed my mind.
Heard a track off The Handsome Family album on 6Music last week and may order that. Also looking forward to the Flowers in the Dirt reissues as it has much of McCartneys collaboration work with Costello.
Never. Call me cheap. But you can’t keep me away from a charity shop/ car boot as I rummage through the CDs and books. Not unusual to find books / CDs/ DVDs going for 2 or 3 for £1. Hard not to experiment when they are that cheap. Huge amount of shite out there, of course.
Sometimes. Then completely forget that I did, so it’s nice when it pops through the door.
Only after a serious amount of pre-mulling.
John Gorka – Before Beginning, Quiero Creedence – Various Mexican bands/artists tribute to CCR,
Goat – Requien, Hawkwind – The Charisma Years, Broooose – Chapter & Verse,
Anthony Phillips – Private Parts V-VIII, National Park Radio – Great Divide,
Ryley Walker – Golden Sings…, Led Zep – The Complete BBC Sessions,
Drive By Truckers – American Band, Pineapple thief – Your Widerness,
Fleetwood Mac – Mirage (deluxe),
Prince – Around The World In A Day ( this was an Amazon cock-up they priced the LP at £1.75, which they have honoured),
The Complete Stax/Volt singles – I ordered this 9 CD box set on Amazon for £21.74 but they are having difficulty finding one.
As you can see I`m cutting back on CD/LP buying, I`m now going to sort the 3 piles of books by my side of the bed, mrs birdy isn`t happy about them being almost as tall as myself.
Trying to cut back and actually listen to pile of stuff but got Ramones 40th box, Free vinyl box and The Monkees newbie on vinyl logged plus The Boss’ memoir
BTW you really don’t need that “Complete” Zeppelin BBC. Just Google ‘Empress Valley Complete BBC’ and fill yer boots
Yep, the Boss`s memoir is a must once I`ve sorted out those books!
I`m intrigued DFB `Free vinyl box`? Pray tell and can you get me one?
It’s not vinyl it’s CD but yes I could supply it
Thanks @dogfacedboy I was only jesting, much appreciated though, ; ))
Thanks Birdy. John Gorka on order.
To be truthful bunglie I`ve ordered this, what I term as, `blind`. It was recommended by `No Depression` which emails me twice a week with the latest info in `Americana`. It seems to be the kind of music I like so I`m looking forward to hearing it. Have you heard any of his other albums?
Gorka’s good. In the same sort of territory as Richard Shindell and early Jeffrey Foucoult
err, and what sort of territory do RS & JF occupy retro? It`s OK I`m going to explore.
Yes and no.
I do tend to pre order some of the deluxe boxsets – currently have Fleetwood Mac / Mirage, Simple Minds / New Gold Dream BluRay from Amazon and Yes / Tales BluRay, King Crimson / Radical Action BluRay from Burning Shed.
Nice thing about Amazon preorders is that they will give you the lowest price.
For “standard” releases I tend not to preorder so that I can see if a hi-res download will be available.
I usually buy my stuff in a shop. They would give me funny looks if I’d announce “There’s probably a record out in five months that I’ll probably going to like – I’d like to pre-order it. Now.” You may call me old-fashioned… (oh, I see you do already!)
I`d like to get my stuff direct from a shop.
There are two problems where I live, no shops and if there was I reckon the prices would be too high with the amount of CDs/LPs I buy and am trying to cut back on or even stop!
You can preorder stuff from physical shops as well as online. You always could
I suppose that makes sense, but I’m like Fatima in that I prefer to buy my stuff from an actual shop. Looking at Tigger’s list above, none of that is not going to be available over the counter from at least three outlets here in Bristol. I will order things that aren’t guaranteed to be on the shelves anyway, like the upcoming 65daysofstatic soundtrack album for the No Man’s Sky game, but I’ll still do that from a shop rather than online. It will probably change when I finally jack in urban living and make my escape to the Black Mountains, but that’s not happening any time soon.
Also, well done to everyone involved for not turning this into the usual grammatical grump-fest about “pre” ordering. So far.
Black Mountain – can recommend them. Oh sorry, I see.
Don’t Rise take orders? They are Rough Trade under an alias after all
They probably do, not that I get up that end of town as much as I’d like, but what I was trying to say was that all the stuff on Tigger’s list will be readily available on their shelves (and HMV’s, and Fopp’s) so there’s no real point to preordering it. OOAA.
Of course you are right. As my tags suggest, I’m not entirely comfortable with *pre*-ordering online. My nearest shop is in the centre of Warrington. Parking is an issue, especially on a Saturday, which is the day I’m free to go in to town. Those seven items are not all released on the same day, so require several trips. You see where I’m going? I can sit on my backside getting fatter, click a few buttons and they deliver to me without petrol and parking costs (I clump my purchases to avoid p&p).
The thing that surprises me, and the realisation that prompted the thread, is that I’ve never been so willing to purchase items without hearing them first. Takes me right back to 1982!!
I love doing that, ordering without hearing. I`ve rarely been disappointed.
Which shop is that @tiggerlion?
HMV in Golden Square.
Just Ryley and Van the Man.
For the big name stuff that I want to get on day one.
Others may get pre-ordered of the mood takes me at the time – I usually forget.
Also, being a tight git – if I can wait or week or so (A month perhaps), the price often starts to drop.
Nothing on pre-Order at the moment – the last pre-Order was Brian Eno – The Ship
The Ramones set started at 35 squid on preorder and now is around 50. But yes I often wait for the price drop three months later via all manner of retailers off and on line
Not much at the moment Bowie, Game of Thrones and a couple of other things.
Here’s Resident’s pre-order page in case anyone has forgotten anything.

Thanks – new Scott Walker?
“The Beatles Live at the Hollywood Bowl?” Fantastic!
And now housed in a cover worthy of it.
Friday, 9th September was a day “up-country” anyway. A major result.
Checking out The Fabs, I discovered Amazon are selling a 6 cd box of Stones boots, ‘Another Time’, which could be right up your street.
I don’t have anything on Pre-order. But if I did, the following CDs or LPs would be:
Various Artists – Money Maker Collection (Studio One)
Nathan Bowles – Whole and Cloven (on Paradise of Bachelors)
North Sea Radio Orchestra – Dronne
Itasca – Open to Chance (also on Paradise of Bachelors)
Jerry Garcia Band – Garcialive Volume Seven: November 8, 1976 (nice to see this series of releases up and running again)
I have all those Jerry Garcia live releases, lovely stuff. I`ll order Volume 7 once it`s out, the price always drops.
That is interesting, it looks like Yep Roc Music are taking over from where Heartbeat left off with Studio 1 re-releases in America. It seems like a long time since Heartbeat released anything. I look forward to seeing how their reissues complement those of Soul Jazz.
Oh – a new Nathan Bowles album! Thanks for the tip!
I stick to the basic concept of ordering.
I have never understood the need for the pre prefix.
Good to see you in these parts, Wheaty.
I’m using the term as Am*z*n do. ‘Pre-order today.’ I think it means, ‘order now before the release date and we’ll take your money and send it to you when it arrives.’
I don’t feel any great need to get my favourite artists’ stuff on the day of release. I’m just not that excitable, I suppose.
See also: pre-book.
Not from Amazon. I may be wrong but from reading many posts from many threads over the last few months it seems the disgust widely espoused on here a couple of years ago at their anti-union / staff policies have worn off on Afterword punters. Happy to be proved wrong?
As I am a human being I’m basically a contradiction on legs. I’m not perfect so I buy some things from Amazon but far from all. See my post above for Resident’s pre-order page.
I am far from perfect but it’s hardly Mother Teresa territory to not visit amazon.com, surely?
Residents comment duly noted though 🙂
I don’t smoke or drink so surely I’m allowed one vice?
Amen brother
Good cartoon that
You don’t drink, don’t smoke. What do you do?
Live life, love life, try not too make too many waves, look after and be looked after by my loved ones, music (listening not making) walking and working.
That fills my days!
Which of those is a vice?
None I think but I have had a Fray Bentos S&K pie and Iceland Hash Brown chips for tea tonight and that is pretty vice like I reckon.
Subtle innuendos follow.
😀
The sad truth is that Amàzon provide a second-to-none service at a very reasonable price. It takes resolve, hard work and a lot of dedication to resist their lure for any length of time.
I have to say that’s bollocks, really. Pay a bit more, wait a couple more days.
Why pay more and wait? If they don’t pay enough tax it is up to the Inland Revenue to resolve the issue. I would pay less tax if I could get away with so would we all. Don’t see the point in being self-righteous about it.
Fine, whatever works for you. I’m happy I’m not supporting them.
I was just pointing out that the right-on-brother freedom-for-Tooting attitude I recall from a thread on here previously seems to have died a bit of a death.
Do they pay tax in France, Germany & Italy cos I get a lot of stuff from the non UK Amazons
It’s not a tax issue. Thought I wasbeing reasonably clear. Perhaps not.
Year I get it but do you think Amazon will suddenly start paying their employees more and treating them better if their profits drop. It makes no difference
As a consumer choice is my only weapon. It may not change their philoisophy (I disagree here too – consumer protest has been effective elsewhere) but I feel better not supporting them.
I use Amazon a lot not so much because of price but for the delivery service. Being able to collect most things from a local newsagent the next day or the day after if I’m elsewhere for a fairly low annual fee rather than having to wait in for a courier is what makes it attractive.
I can’t really argue with you, MC. I’m not proud of myself. I do try and resist, pay a bit more, wait, but, before I know it, I’m filling my basket. It took me over twenty attempts to give up cigarettes.
I admit that I buy a large % of my music from the tax dodgers and yes because of the pricing and service. They are also very good at taking back LPs which are new and less than pristine.
However I do buy a good amount from shops, new and used. I also buy direct from a band`s/artist`s sites but only UK based, postage from the USA is as most of you know very high. I don`t buy from those who I reckon have enough in their off-shore accounts.
Ryley Walker on Tuesday so hopefully shall buy the album direct. Otherwise nothing on order.
I’m completely the other way round. Albums still to purchase include:
Blackstar
ChVrches
Natalie Merchant
Last Underworld
Grimes
Radiohead
If it’s not on emusic it goes in the ‘I’ll get round to it in a bit’ Amazon wishlist. Just about catching up to ‘Leave Your Sleep’ now. I’m too old to feel that much in this world needs to be owned RIGHT NOW.
50 plus years ago we used to pre-order the Beatles singles. I can only assume that was because the first shipments to arrive in our local record store would sell out on the same day and it could be a week or so before they got more stock.
Other than that the only thing I can recall pre-ordering since then is the audiobook version of David Hepworth book 1971: Never A Dull Moment.
More than I can remember off the top of my head.
Bowie boxset
The Beat
Beatles Hollywood Bowl
Nels Cline
Alabama 3 – Last Train to Mashville
Wilco schmilco
Only 3 of them from Amazon so I’m semi self-righteous, semi hypocrite I suppose.
I’m sure there are others, they’ll be a nice surprise when they turn up.
Which Beat is that, Neil?
The one that is Ranking Roger with a new band that sounds just like The Beat.
Walking On The Wrong Side. The album, Bounce, is out at the end of September.
That’s the one.
Nels?
Lovers – released tomorrow (5th August)
Bored in the office and Earth inform me of this…
https://bertjansch.bandcamp.com/album/living-in-the-shadows-on-the-edge-of-a-dream-casebound-4lp-sets-earlybert-bundle
The good thing about the pre-order is the surprise package turning up weeks later – I don’t think it means I don’t buy in my local shop when I visit – I just buy something else…
I sometimes pre-order the expensive stuff because the price can fluctuate quite wildly in the interim and, as commented above, Amazon give you the lowest price, and you can always cancel at the last moment if that doesn’t happen. Currently preordered the Fabs and the Led Zep…just because I can basically…and I was frankly pissed as well. Anyone else here try to avoid buying when refreshed..? Ebay is a swine for that…
Good point – getting in from a few beers…the internet is always open…
The postie has just been and delivered “Don’t Fear the Reaper” on 7″ vinyl. I cannot for the life of me remember buying this, no sign of it on eBay, turns out I ordered it on Discogs last Friday! Ah well, at least it was only £1.25 and I suppose it can go on the jukebox…
You have a jukebox? Please tell us more.
Photo of it near the bottom of the thread – just above a comment from you!
I’m surprised you don’t have millions of 7 inch singles! Did you get Spanish Stroll?
Generally I don’t, as to be honest I rarely get that first day buzz of having something new and shiny. That said, I did end up ordering the Radiohead, Public Service Braoadcasting Remixes and Case/Lang/Veirs CDs to arrive on the same day of release. And in an attempt to get their latest album, Preternatural, into the charts, Moulettes were really pushing pre-orders and I was happy to sign up for that one too. Otherwise charity shops and special offers take my sweaty pennies
