As some may know around here, I’ve had the great pleasure of being involved in creating a Dick Gaughan box set this year, with tremendous crowdfunding support.
But as well as that forthcoming box set (for general release in February 2026), we’ve created a cheaper offering (on LP/CD/DL) available to the general public – ‘Live at the BBC: 1972-79’.
The vinyl version is available for pre-ordering at Last Night From Glasgow. And as of today, the CD version of the release is available – stock is in – from Talking Elephant Records, run by my good pal Malcolm Holmes, prog-rock panjandram and doyen of the East Anglian Morris Dancing scene.
The album comprises 10 songs from BBC master tapes – a fabulous snapshot of Dick’s work in the 70s – taken from the ‘R/evolution: 1969-83′ box set but mastered and pitch corrected exclusively for this LP & CD by Eroc Ehrig. Both formats include essays by myself and guitar legend Martin Simpson, no less, plus rare 70s photos. The LP version includes in an insert a near-facsimile reproduction of Fred Woods’ 1974 ‘Folk Review’ interview with Dick.
Talking Elephant will also be making the album available for download via their Bandcamp page (it isn’t there yet). This will be the ONLY part of the box set contents that will be available for download.
The thinking behind ‘Live at the BBC: 1972-79’ is to give some ‘new old’ Gaughan music to vinyl buffs and, in the CD and DL formats, to make at least something from the box set generally available to people who can’t afford the full set or new listeners who might want to ‘take a punt’ on Dick Gaughan’s music in the wake of recent (and hopefully forthcoming) media coverage.

For any interest, here’s a review of it wot I wrote, @Colin-H having been kind enough to send me a copy.

Sensational stuff, Retro! Though it’s very nuanced. I’m not sure – did you like the album? 😀
I see that “Dick Gaughan – Live at the BBC: 1972-79” has made no.2 in Ian A. Anderson’s 2025 chart of ‘Best Compilation, Reissue or Historic CD’ on his Podwireless music podcast.
Pipped at the post by Marianne Faithfull! Oh well.

And there was me thinking Ian A. was one of the Faithfull…. er, hang on…
