Long before Jonathan Ive there was Dieter Rams. Before Apple there was Braun. I still have this alarm clock. It is unmistakably Braun, looks cool, totally practical and never goes wrong.
What classic design do you cherish? It could be a machine, an item of clothing, anything really.

or
Okay, it’s a fuckin’ Raleigh Chopper!
You know what James? I really wanted one – very badly – but it was the rich kids that got them. They were bloody expensive in 1971 let me tell you. As well, my Dad saw them as a sign of the end of civilisation as he knew it. That and Coca Cola and suede shoes.
Me too. I had goes on my mate’s, never had one. My little brother had the little one – Chipper?
Chopper was the posers bike, and now occupies that “rose tinted” remember Spangles and Clackers era.
The Grifter – now that was the bike to cherish.
Looked like a motorbike, weighed about a ton and was virtually indestuctible – unless it got run-over by a Removal Lorry (which happened to a friends bike – he cried for about 4 days)
For sheer design brilliance, I nominate the Brompton folding bike. It still amazes people who haven’t seen one unfold before.
Denied, because stupid small wheels 🙂
Easy, my Mondaine Swiss Railway Watch. coming up for a decade old and on its fifth battery and strap etc. Recently went through the washing machine on a 40 cycle and is still working just fine, though
Is this the one?
nope it’s not working
I’m sure it’s that one.
Is it THIS one?
No it’s this one.
God i amuse myself
I had one of those clocks. Classic. Here’s my design classic which I cherish – my Strat.
http://i1094.photobucket.com/albums/i449/charlieboy14/strat_zpssiavtsvt.jpg
And I suppose I can have two? My Tele.
http://i1094.photobucket.com/albums/i449/charlieboy14/tele_zpsxwvh62pu.jpg
Twang, old boy – is that Tele a Jerry Donahue model?
Indeed it is Fitter.
Very nice – I have an Omniac, but I always fancied the original Fender – great colour, as well…
Don’t have one. Often fancied one, but they’re too heavy, sadly.
Mean to be answer to Steer not you Fitter!
Don’t be shy Twang. Where’s the Les Paul?
Sorry to hi-jack, here’s mine instead. True design classic, as is the SG

Here’s a true design classic:
Oh yes, women. Nice one, God.
Ooh Nice!
It’s all here;
Is this in it:
Still not working – just imagine a Vulcan Bomber
When Brookster (whatever happened to him) did a similar thread on the first AW site, I posted the trad nail clippers, as they are so useful. But they were recently knocked into a cocked hat by this sublime little piece of engineering –

Brookster was with us over on FB but hasn’t returned here yet, Sal.
Pop down to Bavaria, buy him a beer and get him back on board!
Automotive Design – thats what makes me salivate.
Examples:
Ford Granada Mark 1

Triumph Stag
http://i1062.photobucket.com/albums/t490/Rigid_Digit/Triumph-Stag_2929511b_zpsveeeoelh.jpg
Jaguar XJ
http://i1062.photobucket.com/albums/t490/Rigid_Digit/jaguar-xj6-l-4_zpsp82xsrpz.jpg
Never owned any of the above (probably not likely to), but I do own a Jag X-Type which follows the look of the classic XJ (even if it is a Mondeo underneath)
You can stick your Ferraris, Lambourghinis and all those other snorty loud supercars – these were the posters that adorned my bedroom wall as a kid (along with Iron Maiden, Samantha Fox and that tennis player scratching her bum)
are they a “great” as this on though?
http://i1062.photobucket.com/albums/t490/Rigid_Digit/austin_ambassador_1_82-880x420_zpsjyhtbumo.jpg
The Austin Ambassador
(the 1983 / Y Reg model is the one to go for)
It’s a model I revere.
I’ve no doubt mentioned before that my taste in cars was probably formed by my childhood collection of Matchbox cars, but I tell you what, Jaguar may as well have thrown away their design book after the XJ was released.
My brother met the photographer of that Tennis Player scratching her bum – he went to Birmingham University apparently. Wonder how much he made in royalties because that poster was on every teenagers wall in Britain at the time or so it seemed.
Ladybird books.
Pathfinder shoes with the compass in the heel.
Invisible ink for the budding spy.
I’d love to see the one with the tennis player scratching Sam Fox’s bum. Was it Ilie Nastase?
The faithful Tag Heuer watch – 25 years and counting (or ticking!)
I’ve owned 2 tags. Ever had yours serviced Bargey ol’ boy?
Not yet – only replaced battery.
did you get it done properly – at a Tag dealer – or just a high street cobbler type? Mine needs a new battery and I’m loathe to splash the cash in a poncy jeweller’s.
The first time at a proper dealer as they reseal the back to make it watertight again.
Subsequently just at high street place at less half the price on the grounds I’m never going to dive to 200 metres!
Resealing and pressure testing is par for anything supposedly water proof/resistant, but my Tag lasted about 2 years, stopped, battery replaced, then they realised it was seized, upon which I was told “of course, they need a full service every two years”. I did that once, then I gave up. It sits in a bedside drawer unloved.
Then I went for a Citizen which was very disappointing (completely unusable crown), and since then a cheap Lorus which hasn’t missed a beat in over 5 years.
Two from me – my Swiss Army knife and my Bialetti stove-top coffee maker. I use them both every day and can’t imagine them performing their respective tasks better.
I was going to pick the Quad II valve power amp: but I’ve decide to go for my Quad 44 preamp – an absolute classic! …and tone controls that really work….
With half a mind to diffusing the testosterone on this thread (amps, cars, rocket launchers…), I will venture to add the Le Creuset 30cm casserole.
We use ours several times a week. It’s thirty years old and a design that’s maybe twice as old. Indestructible and magically the right size and shape for cooking pretty much everything.
To diffuse the namby pamby, bien pensant, woolly, lefty, girly oestrogen of Mooosey’s thread, I would like to nominate the Ducati 916. Hoo-Ah! Yippee- Kayaa Muddy Funster!
…confirming that this thread is basically about mid-life crises.
I think my contribution fits right in.
And mine.
“Fits right in”, you missed that one missus
Nope.
I’ve got one. It does what a watch should do. Clearly. Tells the time. No stopwatches or other crap.
Mondaine Swiss Railways watch, that is
FFS this reply thing is driving me insane. That was supposed or respond to Steerpike.
Me too!
It’s OK on a proper PC but on the shitepad it is completely hit and miss.
Is THIS the one?
The Silicone Pink Classic from Ann Sum…… WHAT?
I wondered what was causing that static on the radio….
A Fred Perry cotton pique polo shirt.
First had one as a 12 year old in the last knockings of the Mod revival in ’82. Still wearing them now.
Often copied, never bettered.
Dualit toaster. Clockwork timer and a lever to get the toast out. Our is relegated to my work unit as “it doesn’t do thick bread very well.” Wrongity wrong.
And they can be repaired. We’ve got a four-slot (ooh-er). One element gone in 15 years. Took me 10 minutes to fit a replacement.
I too had that Braun alarm clock, had it for years and then lost it.
Here are a few from me.
– Airfix models.
– Hornby train sets.
– Ordnance Survey maps.
– The old Penguins with orange/white covers and line drawings. They’ve lasted and age well.
– Batsford images on those old guidebooks.
I also have a pair of Church’s brogue shoes which are an absolute delight to wear (so they should be given the price), they feel like slippers and look very stylish, feel like a right Major Thompson.
I worked with someone who wasn’t particularly wealthy but he insisted on wearing Church’s brogues. He maintained that putting them on a shoe tree and looking after them will mean that they last for decades – thereby justifying their price.
Not for me. I would neglect them.
Before I became a lawyer I managed to convince a fairly well established partner in the property sector to go for coffee with me so that I could pick his brains as to what the career really involved.
He was a lovely chap, spoke to me for a while and gave me two or three pieces of advice. I can’t remember any of them now (particularly as I’m not a property lawyer), except that he told me that in order to be taken seriously I should invest in a good pair of Church’s.
Bollocks to that. Anyone with more respect for footwear than intellect doesn’t deserve decent legal representation.
That is an idiotic thing for him to have said, but they are comfortable and further suit me because I largely have the intellect of an adolescent. But at least I’m no city slicker.
I prefer Trickers. Church’s are for city slickers.

*waits for someone to post a picture of a box of Swan Vestas*
I don’t smoke anymore – nearly 2 years solid without a lapse now, longest time since I was 14. But I still gaze longingly at Zippos. Bloody gorgeous things.
this could light your fire…maybe make a nice album cover too?
The Jigger.
One way up, its a sinle measure. Other way up is a double – either way a gaurenteed way of ensuring exact measure, and hence optimum enjoyment of your chosen spirit

The corkscrew is a generic design classic in its own right, but the Waiters Friend variant is like the Swiss Army knives of Corkscrews – it does everything you want it to.

If we’re doing aircraft, the Swedes have always had their own design aesthetic
