My Dad knew his dad. One afternoon I was at his house. Denis was a teenager, me a wee lad. He spent all the time kicking a battered tennis ball against the wall. I walked over and said “Gies a kick then’. He looked at me, didn’t say a word and walked away. I still sleep in a Denis Law t-shirt, mind.
He was once asked why he played with his shirt cuffs over his hands. “You ever played football on a Saturday morning in Aberdeen?”
Only 8 comments, including this one, for someone who, way after his heyday as a player was still a household name, synonomous with UK football’s golden age.
In contrast, 21 comments for Tony Slattery, who was a decent but not outstanding comedian in his day. Not in the same league as his “Whose Line Is It Anyway” colleagues Greg Proops and Josie Lawrence IMO. Pretty much a forgotten man until the tale of his struggles, in recent years.
No great controversy ever attached to Denis Law, though.
Great player, great character. An absolute hero.
Never a United fan but that triumvirate of Best Charlton and Law was something very special. All gone now. RIP
Watched a documentary on him a couple of weeks ago. Absolute gent, no airs and graces.
What a player he was
RIP, Lawman
Saw him and that great Man U side of the late-60s and early 70s play several times
At Highfield Road.
Always the one game every SkyBlues fan wanted to attend
Remember him this way
Always loved the simplicity of his one arm in the air goal celebration
Less talented and charismatic latter day strikers would do well to take a leaf out of our Den’s book

As an old Manchester United fan l saw him in his prime, and he was known as The King for a reason. What a player he was, and what sad news this is.

Controversy? What about that time he refused to play keepie-up with me? Twas the talk of Aberdeen…
