Very sad. A great and unique talent. The statement he released about his terminal condition was brave, humble, humorous, and spiritually inspiring.

I was bought Camembert Electrique for my 17th birthday by my mates at school. It was meant as a piss-take for long reasons I won’t go into. What was funny was that I was genuinely made up to receive the album but their intention had been to take the mickey. There was something about living in North Wales in my late teens and early twenties, frequenting lock-ins in rural pubs and regularly camping in the hills and woods around us that made Gong an essential part of the lifestyle even as we embraced the thrill and the rush of early Smiths, JAMC and The Fall.
I loved the whole pot head pixie/flying teapot whimsy and the electric Camembert album is the one I know and love (Gilli Smyth – I am Your Fantasy – sigh!)
I saw Gongmaison once and they put on a great show. Daevid Allen seemed to be someone who remained true to himself and credible whilst being the archetypal hippy – lovely man.
