Probably the biggest influence on Nottingham’s built environment is an architect who was born Fothergill Watson, his first name being his mother’s maiden name. After his father Robert died, he changed his name to Watson Fothergill to maintain his mother’s family name, clearly believing there were sufficient other Watson’s around.
