I suggest less of a shock than Alice Cooper a few years ago. I missed him, but I’m told he went down a storm. Fairport’s clever trick is to book a big name ‘heritage’ act for Thursday, but not sell day tickets for that day only.

The odd thing is that Thommo is in the UK at the time and playing various festivals with his band. There was a Croppers shaped hole in the schedule (as well as spaces for theatre gigs, assuming you don’t bring a band across the Atlantic only to play on a few consecutive weekends) but no sign of a band gig in Oxfordshire.
He is over most summers, it seems, but only plays at “significant” anniversaries. I suspect the remnants of his old band don’t like him stealing their drizzle every year.
Yebbut … there’s a new band album and tour (or at least festival dates so far) this year. It’s not a case of him turning up, but playing to what would be probably his biggest, and almost certainly his most adoring, audience of the tour.
All his adoring will probably be, like me, signed up elsewhere. I’m hitting Towersey, which has a stonking line-up, especially in the smaller and lesser heard names. http://www.towerseyfestival.com/wp-content/uploads/TF18-LineupPoster.pdf
(The Monday tbc is/are the Shires, whom I hadn’t realised are now that “big”)
And those who still go to Cropredy will still invest in the new RT record when it comes out whether he is there or not.
To be fair, Sloop John B is a folk song isn’t it? Brian Wilson was supposedly doing the “last ever” Pet Sounds gigs 3 or 4 years ago though – his ‘people’ are properly taking the piss now and it irritates me that they have to sell him off the back of one album when the old boy could easily do a really good festival set without playing anything from Pet Sounds .
Oh…and the fucking Levellers – I invoke the Lighthouse Family rule – zero merit and a totally wretched band who should fuck the fuck off. Worse than the Lighthouse Family in fact as…to be fair…I would eat a sandwich made by members of the Lighthouse Family.
Well, maybe not one made by the bass player as he looks as if he may not have washed his hands recently, but they make a decent enough racket and put on a good show. I like ’em, but then again, I never quite understood why the inoffensiveness of the Lighthouse Family inspires quite so much passion. Decent singer and the 3 songs I have hear, admittedly broadly the same song, isn’t so bad.
To be fair it’s never said it is a folk festival, Reunion for the first few years then the Cropredy Convention.
Attended last year as it was the 50 th but see no need to go again.
With regard to Thommo from my vantage point on the disabled platform I saw a steady stream of people leaving as he played on the Friday night.
As the present iteration have been in existence for the last 30 years give or take a few minor adjustments, then there will be those attending who are there for ‘ their’ Fairport and previous lineups mean nothing.
I’m afraid that the trio of Thompson does not do anything for me, I feel he needs someone to bounce off. Enjoyed his playing with his son in law James Walbourne four years ago.
Cropredy last year was the first time I’d ever seen RT, and I had always been an agnostic, but I thought he was terrific! I have walked out on the Levellers at Beautiful Days, but that was as much to do with the crowd to be honest. Friday dies look to be a rum day, Kate Rusby apart, but I committed early so will make the most of it! Anyone else going..?

I forbid you, maidens all, That wear gold in your hair, To come or go by Carterhaugh, For young Mike Love is there.
God only knows where the time goes.
Quiet Joys of Brother Records?
You’re on form!
Very good!

Nope, not enough to entice me….. Barely an hour of decent music per day.

I can’t abide any of those dogs-on-strings people. Ghastly.
Concur with the Doctor on the Levellers. Fucking wretched.
The line up has not interest to me – it looks like a time warp.
I bet they haven’t washed their dreads since I saw them at Glastonbury in the 80s.
*shudders*
Wonder if they were anywhere near Salisbury just recently?

RT is playing Beautiful Days this year…
Now that is a coup….
Poacher turned gamekeeper or what!
