People who enjoyed the “Serial” podcast may like “Crimetown” which I just picked up via the Lefsetz Letter – it takes particular towns and explores the local history of crime. The first series is Providence Rhode Island. Great tales and particularly splendid (and genuine) wise guy accents.

Also recommended, the extraordinary Storyville boxset Death on the Staircase, available on iPLayer, following the twists and turns of a murder trial with input from the defendant and defence team. I’ve watched the first 5 this week and aim to finish over the weekend (so no spoilers by request!)
POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT:
Sounds good. Absolutely mainlined Making a Murderer recently on Netflix. Clearly it fulfilled its remit as entertainment as it kept me and millions of others watching compulsively until the end. I deliberately didn’t google any background on the series until I’d watched it all. When I did, I found enough that convinced me that the series was a partisan representation of the defence case and should be viewed as such. My abiding impression now, in the cold light of day, is that there are most certainly major problems with much law enforcement procedure in Manitowoc County, Wisconsin and no doubt in the USA as a whole, but despite the 500k signatures demanding his release the ‘miscarriage of justice’ of Stephen Avery is perhaps not as clear as the film-makers portrayed it.
It’s very good. I loved the quote “if you’re bad then you have to be really good at being bad”.
