The Rescue Rooms, Nottingham
Fabulous night watching Courtney and a very accomplished 4-piece band (gtr/bass/drums/keys). She has a beautiful voice and calm presence. The voice is reminiscent of Emmylou Harris at times, but that is no bad thing. She is no copyist, and the material is really strong. She can also be soulful and raw.
She showed her indie/rock influences at times, strapping on a 335 for some of the later numbers, as well as playing piano.
Material was focused on the latest album and also an Honest Life (Title track as a solo encore), great versions of Long Road Back To You, Two Cold Nights In Buffalo, Rough round the Edges, Kindness Of Strangers etc. Also a good version of ‘Chain of Fools’ as an Aretha tribute.
Fantastic night, great performance, great atmosphere, devoted and enthusiastic audience. What more do you need.
A mixture of ages, quite a lot of couples of various age range. Very warm and receptive. Devotees who knew the lyrics and materials.
Minor Note: One pair were unfortunately removed by bouncers early on, she was drunk, shouting, talking and harassing other members of crowd. He was belligerent with rather large bouncer.
It made me think..
Nottingham has some great venues for smaller/medium sized shows. It’s a shame I have to drive 50 miles from W. Midlands to see quality acts in quality venues. CMA is going to be big soon.
