Just been listening on Spotify. The quality is much better on youtube. I’m listening on ‘very high’ on spotify 320? It says HD quality on Youtube it’s much better.
Is this 5 CD collection instead of the usual box set that comes out at this time of year – it should be up to #5 and I believe would have covered the Tin Machine years (or which I see there was a live release last week).
Any idea what happened with the usual box set series ?
I think this is this year’s release as I can’t see them releasing two boxes around the same time, and presumably chronological order will resume in the future.
A Tin Machine-period box is in the works, but has been delayed by certain Tin Machine band members. From what I’ve heard the Bowie estate/Parlophone considers them as session musicians not as 25% band members – claiming (proof: the sleeve art) the first TM album is a Bowie album named “Tin Machine”. Maybe they should check out a couple of Bowie interviews from the time…
Well, he has a point.
On the original Tin Machine album the musicians were listed as “Tin Machine are:…”.
On the 1999 remaster it’s “Personnel: David Bowie… Reeves Gabrels…etc.” And the spine reads “David Bowie: Tin Machine”.
Losing 25% of a Bowie album is not peanuts – just ask Frank Black who stated that the royalties for Bowie’s Pixies cover virtually equalled everything else he earned from music in his life.
DB was clearly aware of this. Tonight might not be a very good album, but it did its job of keeping Iggy off the streets.
I look forward to TM being reassessed properly the way that NLMD now has been – and not just because of the 2018 version, no matter how spiffy that is.
It should come as no surprise to members here that the most intelligent comment over on the SDE website post is from the honourable Colin H about John McLaughlin’s involvement. Everyone else is just moaning about it not being a Tin Machine box, and one silly fool is saying he is boycotting all Bowie releases from now on.
* sigh *
I say this every time, but the Toy version of this is one of the greatest things in the DB catalogue. Play the two versions back to back to get the full effect.

“Jeremy” Hunt Sales I’ll wager. Brilliant at drumming, brilliant at being a copper-bottomed wazzock.

Not exactly cheap at £85.99 on pre-order from the tax dodgers. At half the price they’d have my order already but that’s too rich for me.
