Going forward (I know) to the next letter in the alphabet, please give generously to the glossary of good taste (?) in music, film, art, books, etc of any cultural goodies beginning with ‘g’.
Getting things started, here’s a guitarist by Gauguin:

and Ghost Town:

Giants? In that case it must be Goliat…lovely song by Laleh (in Swedish).
(I’m a soppy old fool, this song makes me shed a tear every time!)
Lovely song and sweet video – such fresh complexions!
For those of us who don’t speak Elvish*:
Vad var det vi sa (What did we say)
När vi sträckte ut våra armar (When we reached out our arms)
vad var det vi sa (what did we tell)
När vi två tittade ut ifrån berget (When we two looked out from the mountain)
vad var det vi skrek (what was it we screamed)
När drömmar bar oss bortom stan (When dreams carried us beyond the town)
å en dag ska vi härifrån (On one day we here)
vi sa: vi ska ta över (we said, we will take over)
vi ska ta över världen (we will take over the world)
vi ska bli stora (we should be large)
vi ska bli mäktiga, ha ha (we’ll be mighty, ha ha)
och vi ska göra jorden hel (and we must make the earth full)
ja vi ska göra vattnet rent (yes we’ll do the water clean)
och vi ska aldrig skada (and we will never harm)
varandra mer (each other more)
och vi ska slåss (and we must fight)
ja, vi ska slåss mot Goliat (Yes, we should fight Goliath)
så tro på mig för jag vet att (so believe in me because I know)
du är modigast (You are the bravest)
Vad var det vi sa (What did we say)
som vi aldrig nånsin skulle glömma (we never ever forget)
vad var det vi såg (what was it we saw)
i soluppgången vid sjön (in the sunrise at the lake)
vad var det vi skrek där (what was it we screamed where)
på vägen hem över fotbollsplan (on the way home of football)
en dag ska vi härifrån (someday we will from here)
ni ska ta över (You will take over)
ni ska ta över världen (You will take over the world)
ni ska bli stora (You must be large)
ni ska bli mäktiga, ha ha (you shall be mighty, ha ha)
och vi ska göra jorden hel (and we must make the earth full)
ja vi ska göra vattnet rent (yes we’ll do the water clean)
och vi ska aldrig skada (and we will never harm)
varandra mer (each other more)
och vi ska slåss (and we must fight)
ja, vi ska slåss mot Goliat (Yes, we should fight Goliath)
så tro på mig för jag vet att (so believe in me because I know)
du är modigast, du kan (you are courageous, you can)

G is for Google translate…not 100% correct there Sal, and certainly lacking some poetic beauty.
But a heroic effort!
Here you go, Sal, just a little clean-up of the biggest errors:
What was it we said
when we held out our arms
What was it we said when the two of us
was looking out from the mountain top
What was it we shouted
when dreams carried us beyond our town
Oh one day we will get out of here
We said: we will take over
we will take over the world
We will grow up
we will be powerful
And we shall heal the world
yes, we will make the water clean
and we shall never harm
each other again
And we will fight
Yes, we will fight Goliath
So believe in me because I know
that you are the bravest
What was it we said
that we were never ever going to forget
What was it we saw
by sunrise at the lake
What was it we shouted there
on our way back home across the football pitch
One day we will get out of here
You will take over
you will take over the world
You will grow up
you will be powerful
And we shall heal the world
yes, we will make the water clean
And we shall never harm
each other again
And we will fight
yes, we will fight Goliath
So believe in me because I know
that you are the bravest, you’re able
Thanks, @locust – the human touch is always preferable to the machine.
Ganglians – Hair
Goodfellas (my favourite film)
Are the guns on display significant, @davidks? It’s been some time since I saw the film.
Geraldine Fibbers – Get Thee Gone
That’s new to me,@contraryarticle – but I love the deep bass drones, guitar whines and vocal snarls. Thanks!
Grandfaloon Bus – Some Kind Of Other Love
Howe Gelb & Giant Sandworms, later to become Giant Sand (lovin’ the 80’s hairdos)
Some psychedelic garage rock from one o’ my faves The 13th Floor Elevators – You’re Gonna Miss Me
Time for a spot of Hari Georgeson, I think.
Pixies – Gigantic
I’m only going to amuse myself now, but here’s Swedish comedy group Galenskaparna doing a parody of Finnish films…
Perkele!
Better post this before the proggers wake and nab it.
And while we’re progging.
Oh yes, it’s Prog Central around the Gs. I guess Gabriel stopped being prog when he was on his own. This lot certainly never stopped.
I remember seeing Gentle Giant on that episode of BBC’s Sight and Sound In Concert when it was first broadcast. Somebody posted a link to the full concert on YouTube, and I’ve watched it since a couple of times. What I never appreciated at the time was just how good they were live. So tight, and so together.
Hmmm …. there’s a band I really like, which starts with a G. The name escapes me, though. San Francisco band. 1965-1995. Famous for taking industrial amounts of drugs. Two and a half thousand gigs, traded by tapers over the years. Followed by a particularly obsessive group of fans. Famous for playing long sets full of songs with endless guitar noodling.
Ooooh, the name’s on the tip of my tongue. You must know ’em. They sometimes had two drummers, and a female vocalist who couldn’t sing very well. You can buy about 300 different live albums, all of which basically conmtain the same songs. Led by a rather hairy, beardy guitarist whose surname also began with a G.
No, it’s no good. I can’t think of the name.
Oh, come on, duco01! Can’t you get your Mojo Working? I was relying on you or @morrison or somebody to select some high uality jammage.
This’ll have to do until then, I suppose:
Some more Genesis. Entangled.
G-Stone Recordings
Home of Kruder & Dorfmeister and Tosca
Gattaca
Every idea in this film still seems plausible, more so. It works as both a sci-fi film and as an homage to film noir and, at its heart, is a superbly realised morality tale
..and how many times did I have to watch it before I copped their apartment had a helical staircase (despite the fact that it features so prominently in one of the best scenes in the film)..
Going To A Go-Go – Smokey & The Miracles

Goo Goo Wah Wah – Wah Wah Watson
Time for a little Guy Clark perhaps
And by way of contrast a bit of GYBE.
Gotta have some Grunewald.

Not forgetting Gong,
pesky tablet
What about some Rory…
Like this…
Great call. Still find watching any Rory video a bitter sweet experience these days – such a glorious performer, such a sad loss.
Un peu de Gigi de Nissa
Some garage punk from the Cramps – Garbage Man

Goa trance, courtesy of Green Nuns Of The Revolution
Gospel blues with Rev Gary Davis
and – from the sublime to …
the ridiculous
Gregory’s Girl
Egberto Gismonti and his 10-string guitar, and Nana Vasconcelos
Oh, forgot to mention the tabla player, Collin Walcott.
The Groundhogs from 1970, from the sensational Thank Christ for the Bomb. Power trio!
My strange uncles from abroad
Gogol Bordello
Generation X
John Grant – GMF
Superb video – well conceivedd and filmed, great acting performance (if it is acting (it does look very natural in places) and nicely balancing the melancholy of the song with a touch of humour.
Good Morning Britain
Not just the title of ITVs Breakfast TV broadcast, but also the title of this Aztec Camera/Mick Jones choon:
Gun – Race With The Devil
featuring Paul and Adrian Gurvitz
Later covered by Girlschool
Adrian Gurvitz returned to public consciousness in 1982 after writing a classic in his attic because he was an addict
If we ever do a thread on bands that were poised on the edge of greatness, but blew it, this lot will be front runners:
Bonus points for spotting all the lyrics stolen from other songs…I count four (but one is a little tenuous)
Won’t post the whole thing, but I always find Gorecki’s Third Symphony packs the floor at parties.
My dad’s job was not as cool as this little girl’s dad’s

Turns out there are loads of great bands beginning with G. Has Colin H posted any Glasvegas yet?
The Goodies
Never reveered in quite the same way as The Goons or Monty Python. Often regarded as a bit of a kids show,
In a way, I suppose it was being more slapstick than the others.
Not all of it stands up fantastically well today (then again there are bits of Python that fall flat too), but still worth a watch
Green Day
American Idiot is a fantastic album.
The rest of the catalogue falls somewhat short in my opinion.
Grupo Folklorico y Experimental Nuevayorquino – Anabacoa

Grant Green – Ain’t It Funky Now
Gregory Isaacs – If I Don’t Have You
Georgie Fame – Yeh Yeh

Well, @salwarpe, you started with a painting of a guitarist by Gauguin, there should be a person that shared a flat with him, August Strindberg, playing guitar:

Gasman : Odd to you.
A punk group from Sandviken (sweden) that I discovered because I wanted to buy an amplifier from the lead singer.
His solo act goes by the name Saint Jimi Crycket club.
Ones might notice the reference to Monty Python’s “The Bishop”…
