Is anyone else playing Connections, the new time waster from the New York Times Wordle page? Its similarity to the board round in Only Connect has not gone unnoticed.

Anyway, you can access it from the menu button in the top right of the Wordle page. Join in if you’re playing too.

  7. I like it. It’s very pretty. I particularly like the lavander. Or is it lilac? And the sky blue has a Mediterranian quality that delightfully offests the sun yellow. I fear I shall tire of it eventually, but for now I am enraptured.

    I think I prefer this to Wordle and all the variants (which I gave up on months ago) – is that those are all educated guesswork. This is more like a crossword puzzle, What I’d really like is a Round Britain Quiz-style puzzle

    • I haven’t tried the game yet as I don’t feel adequately prepared, but I can’t help noticing that your attempt differs to all previous attempts in a not altogether unpleasing manner. Also, if Hubes’ self-analysis is anything to go by, you seem to have added two extra exclamation marks to the game’s appraisal. (Not that there’s anything wrong with that.)
      I’ve so far seen the comments “Perfect!”, “Great!” and -my particular favourite, for it implies such hope and promise for the future- “Next time!”. I’m curious to see if it ever comments along the lines of “Say wha?” or “Get serious, dang fool!”, or even a simple “Yo!”.

    • I got the first group relatively easily, which made the second group easier to find.
      The third group seemed to fit together which was lucky as I couldn’t think of a connection for the fourth (a surprise when I found out).

    All correct although I wasn’t aware of one of the names on line four. I have to admit rarely getting 4/4, well first 3/4 because the last line as we know reveals itself. There’s too many Americanisms in this game for my liking.

  124. I haven’t forgotten the game – it’s a highlight of my waking up routine. But it’s only worth posting something when I completely fuck up, which I haven’t done recently. It hasn’t been too insular American in more than one category for a while. With ‘pub crawl’ today, it was positively Dick Van Dyke, as I think Pip in the Archers might say when comparing Toby to Stella.

    I really didn’t know what was happening here at all.

    Edit: A note for Hubert. Like the wordiply thread he promoted with the plumbing post, this Connections thread is unseen on the front page apart from occasional appearances in the recently updated column.

    So how did I find it so easily?

    By going to the ‘Track’ tab in the menu and selecting ‘Posts you’ve commented on’.

    Very satisfying – ambiguous enough to make it a puzzle, but each line solved slowly reduced the options enough to make the guesswork incrementally a leetle easier.

      • Connections isn’t friendly to those of us with short-term memory issues. I remember a link related to baseball (oh God) and cool kids slang words (have pity on us!) – both memorable because I got them wrong.

        Googling the answers now I see the other missing link for me was words with ‘lucky’ as a prefix and it wasn’t baseball, but ‘Tinder’ actions – now why would I not know those…

        The one I got right was present wrapping and for everyone’s* delight, here are the slang words

        FIRE, LIT, SICK, TIGHT.

        Is that somebody with a sickle and a hood walking my way?
