As in @ColinH and his fight to get and give Dick Gaughan his rightful acclaim and some recompense, well documented previously, attention is drawn to Sept/Oct’s R’n’R (née Rock’n’Reel magazine. In it is a fascinating article and interview withy each of them, updating to what was, at time of publication, the current state of play. It is a good read and has you think well of each of them.

I guess I ought to buy a copy.
Can you get it in Smiths, er, I mean Jones?
I’ve never heard of that mag I’m afraid, and I doubt it will turn up in the village shop, nestled between the TV tattle mags, Farmer’s Weekly, Horse & Hound and several subspecies of Land Rover mag.
Sometimes. I subscribe because it was hit and miss as to whether a copy would turn up. I like it as it is a little more roots oriented than Unshod and Boho, which I just buy on the hoof. Lots of folk, country, blues etc.
I’ve just bought the current issue online – thanks for the tip, I think I might like the roots emphasis.
I used to subscribe to it
It’s a good magazine whenever I got around to reading it
That’s the problem with me and music mags I buy them flip through them that’s it
I’ve just re-subscribed to Prog I wonder if I’ll read more than one piece in each mag
I find that I’m reading less and less in Prog magazine – the editorial writing has an oddly “arch” tone sometimes, almost as if they are slightly embarrassed by what they profess to champion…
Understandably…. 😉
Now now Mr Retro your smugness sometimes tarnishes what’s left of your reputation 😂
Oh, I say!
Obviously it was meant in jest, Mr Retro is a fine upstanding member of this community
Obviously…(insert wink emoji)
Did you know smug is gums spelt backwards?
I used to subscribe to it and only stopped because they didn’t auto renew it one year and I didn’t get around to it. I liked it a lot
@Twang Do you mean you used to subscribe to the aforementioned R&R, or the redoubtable Prog?
I confess I’ve never read either of them yet, but (as I haven’t had the chance to explain in our still-hasn’t-happened Progcast: 2) I rather fear that the shiny Prog beast would leave me cold, while anything that casts a wider net in a mildly Frootsy direction – like R&R perchance – would be more to my current taste.
R&R – Rock & Reel as it was known then. They have a side hustle where micro artists like me can submit albums for review… if you’re a subscriber. But I liked the mag and kept it going until they didn’t renew.
Incidentally I got 3 stars and they were nice about it.
That’s three out of three, right?
Not sure I’m all that interested in Colin’s Dick, ta.
Well, my copy of R&R has arrived, and a very shiny thing it is, awash with budget-threatening news from the folky rootsy side of things. The piece that features our @Colin-h and Dick Gaughan is a great read, re-relling much of what Colin has brought to these pages along the way.
Roll on the boxed set’s arrival; I’m setting aside a good weekend for a full wallow. It won’t be too long now. Better late than never!
Thank you, Vulps. Mike was slightly adrift in saying ‘Live in Belfast’ and ‘Live in the 70s’ are planned sequels to the box set – they are limited edition Kickstarter ‘extras’. But there are definitely sequels planned…
One thing that struck me was how new the magazine smells! It honks of posh paper and expensive production values. I’m used to the slovenly standards of the Staggers and the Eye – this thing shines like a paint company’s shades chart.
Speaking of Gaughan, three splendid clips from a 1993 Norwegian TV show surfaced recently. This one’s especially great:
