Wonderful, fascinating stuff. Very easy to understand why you enjoyed it so much, Steve.
Yes, as entertaining as plugging in and positioning dozens of microphones is for the engineer, and the endless days of mixing the multitracks, I’ve never bettered the in-the-round recordings I’ve helped make with a single Soundfield microphone.
I’m always aiming for a Trinity Session, although I’ve never quite managed it.
Incredible – some proper sound engineering, and ingenuity. No wonder it sounds so good.
I suggest your follow on listening should be Michelle Shocked’s Texas Campfire Tapes. An altogether different vibe, but it keeps that single microphone theme going.
Backing by the crickets.
“I realised that no matter how much money you spend on your bloody sound system, if you’ve got a shitty–sounding room, you’re not gonna get anywhere”
Now I’m sure I’ve heard that before somewhere 🫡
P.S. 14 grand for a microphone? Holy moly.
