Back on track with the Checkers this week. We’ve been a bit threadbare in recent weeks (possibly due to holiday season, or maybe just fat-fighting fatigue). Let’s hear where you’re at, and how you’re doing.
Check in in the comments below…
(I posted this earlier but the site broke for a bit and it disappeared)

EXERCISE – After 9 days of sitting by a hospital bed, it’s been marvellous to get back to some swimming/squash/walking etc. Really missed moving about.
FOOD – Back to healthy fare.
DRINK – As Best Man/Woman, I was obligated to drink rather a lot of alcohol at my brother’s stag do at the weekend. I stepped up to the challenge manfully/womanfully, despite my lack of recent experience in alcohol consumption due to this year’s Chubby Checking efforts. I miraculously escaped without a hangover, for no logical reason. Maybe it was muscle memory?
SCALES – 1lb. Bringing my total loss to 43lbs.
MISCELLANEOUS – My daughter’s frightening bout of pneumonia has responded well to antibiotics and she’s been discharged from hospital. After the couple of days where IT doctors were hovering and there was talk of intubation, this relatively quick recovery was a hell of a relief. Proving to me yet again that for all my daughter’s health issues with (she has a complicated chromosome disorder) and for all her weak muscle tone, she’s as tough as bloody nails.
Glad the hospital stuff is done and dusted. I imagine you needed those stag do drinks.
I was at a wedding this weekend, in The Netherlands. They have a relaxed approach to the day, with a lot of opportunities for eating and drinking. Long story short – I ate my own body weight in cake. so I won’t be weighing myself this week…
I did weigh myself before I went though and found that I was down to 12 stone 8 pounds, which I liked.
You get a free Chubby Checker pass at weddings, @lando-cakes. It’s in the rules.
Liking what the scales say is a Good Thing.
Ah, my comment seems to have been lost in the outage. It went something like
Great news re Drakey Junior. Still entertaining visitors ( only a week to go) so once again ignoring the steely glare of the bathroom scales.
Thanks.
I’m beginning to think you just have too many convivial friends. But they are fun…
Morning! Hooray for Drakeygirl Jr, such good news that she’s much better.
Apologies that I missed the last Chubby Check-In, I had a few days away in Devon, followed by an intense family week of adventures with all the kids. It’s been lovely.
I also had a weekend away with my best mate last month (involving a lot of sleeping and reading) which gave me the opportunity to think over various aspects of my life, and decide how I wanted to do things better. From that weekend I resolved:
– To make time every day to write a journal
– To turn off my electronics by 10pm each night so my brain had a better chance of switching off
– To spend less time dicking around on the internet / games. If I want to play games, I’ll still do it, but only at the appropriate time, for an appropriate amount of time!
– To get to bed earlier
– To get a tracker (a Jawbone UP2) so I could check exactly how much I was sleeping / moving in an average day
– To plan the week’s meals and shopping in advance. Means there’s less chance of me making myself a last-minute unhealthy meal because there’s nothing good to eat.
…all of which has worked out pretty well. But the tracker suddenly made it obvious that I really wasn’t active enough.
My time in Devon involved lots and lots of walking, and time for thinking. I have a busy brain, and I sometimes need a bit of space to process everything. So it was the perfect opportunity to review my new habits and decide what else I was going to do. I’d forgotten just how much I enjoy long works (my brain goes into a kind-of-focused trance, which is very soothing). So I made some additional resolutions:
– I will either walk 10k steps or do an hour’s exercise every day.
– I will make some time for meditation / relaxation every day.
So, it’s all going pretty well so far. I’m only a week in to the extra resolutions, but I’ve managed to get the exercise in, and I’m surprised at what a difference it’s making. I have more energy throughout the day — particularly in the evenings when I’d usually flag. I’ve got some stressful stuff in my life at the moment, and exercise makes me feel more cheerful in general — and on the days when I’m not feeling so great, a good walk helps me feel better.
So, I feel fitter, happier, plus I’m still (slowly but) steadily losing weight. I’m happy with all that.
BTW All the above has only been possible because I’m reading an excellent book about forming / changing / breaking habits. I’m only halfway in and it’s already been phenomenally helpful. It’s “Better than Before” by Gretchen Rubin.
For the future, I need to think seriously about *how* I’m going to incorporate the exercise when it stops being a novelty, and when school’s back in. I possibly need to get up a bit earlier to start each day with a long walk. Or I need to go for an early evening walk. Or I need to build an hour’s break and exercise into my working day. Possibly a mix of the above depending on the day. But I’m feeling pretty positive about everything…
Thanks for that, @hannah. A lot of good sense in that post.
My habits list is probably pretty similar.
I also use a journal, mainly to list what I’m going to do the next day, the next week, and the next month. I’m way more organised now. The first thing I put down is what exercise I’m going to do, and if it’s there on my list, then I will do it. Finding the right time is important. I’ve discovered hours of the morning that were previously unfamiliar to me! But I am flexible too, and will switch the time around if necessary. If I get a load of work in, I’ll just do my swim or walk later – but I will do it.
The main thing is you have to pick something you enjoy and make a way to fit it in to your average day. If you don’t do both of these things, it’ll just fizzle out.
Keep on keeping happy…
Can I join? I’ve managed to lose a stone in the last month simply by drastically cutting down on biscuits and taking the dog for much longer walke 150 minutes instead of 90 minutes.. That’s about 7 miles in old money.
Things are on hold at the moment, the annual Greek sojourn is being endured. I’m still 14lb above my recommended weight but I reckon I need to lose a bit more because I used to be normally underweight. There’s a steep climb to an old Venetian fort at the top of a hill that I intend to climb, maybe every other day, or err, maybe once! Over and out.
Welcome! All sounds excellent…
Of course you can, @andyourbirdcansing. Your methods are simple and effective!
I do lots of walking, too, but I only have an imaginary dog.
As you’re now a member of our exclusive club, and you’ve lost a stone, then you are due a coveted rosette:

I’ve showed my better half the rosette @drakeygirl and boy is she envious.
Oh and thank you.
I might just adopt “showing the rosette” as a euphemism.
Move along now, nothing to see here.
