Another great one! Boogie Nights is my favourite record I think, so much fun and also incredibly sophisticated sounding.
It was great that they were ‘ours,’ even though they were multinational.
Before JD Nicholas was hired as the onstage vocalist for Heatwave, he was in a 9-piece West London funk band called Hit And Run with guitarist Paul Fox and drummer Dave Ruffy, both later of The Ruts.
The other two Ruts, Malcolm Owen and Segs, were Hit & Run’s roadies. The band’s trumpet and sax players, Luke Tunney and Gary Barnacle, became The Horny Horns, who featured on some of The Ruts recordings. Both later played with Jools Holland’s big band. My oldest pal Martin was Hit And Run’s bassist.
That’s brilliant, Mike. Thanks.
I used to live near Cleethorpes. Known in NE Lincs as “Meggies” for no reason I ever discovered.
Marvellous! That’s almost a book in itself.
A pedant writes: First para mixes Chinn and Chapman, and includes a your/you’re typo.
Ta. Fixed.
Blimey, bet that Nicky Chinn tale resonated, @niallb !
A good read. I was way too snobbish, at the time, to ever like Chinnichap, even baulking when Chapman got the Blondie gig (and feeling Richard Gottehrer was far more in keeping with the band, if, clearly, way less commercially minded.) Of course, likewise, Heatwave were disco bollix to me back then, and I could barely manage a grudging appreciation of Temperton’s later work with Jacko. Hindsight, eh…….
@retropath2 I could not believe it. During some really dark days he was writing songs which made kids so happy. He went up in my estimation, so much and will forever change they way I think about his music.
ChinnyChap? Me too.
Heatwave? Loved ’em.
Possibly the best one yet. I can’t wait for the book!
I love that the last three have been someone’s ‘best one yet.’
Niall, thank you so much for that. Definitely the best one yet, particularly given the presence of some character called Barry Blue.
Ha!
An amazing bit of research and writing. These just keep getting better Niall.
