About to hit the charity shops of Muswell Hill later,now I’ve just been told. Bought a bhundu boys album on my way to get the paper.

Picked up a few yesterday, including series 2 of Saxondale – watched a couple of episodes and it’s as good as I remembered. You get the impression that it meant quite a bit to Steve Coogan.

Today’s haul – a sealed copy of the latest Arctic Monkeys album, a double best of Radiohead & Islands by The Band (plus Best Of Sly & The Family Stone for a chum).
Yesterday I was given about 20 sleeveless CDs including Blood on the Tracks, a couple of Nick Cave, Stones, Joni Mitchell, Dave Brubeck and Jeff Beck

I do bits of work for a charity shop so they let me have anything they can’t sell: like sleeveless CDs, amplifiers, iPod docks. I’m very fortunate in that respect.

Well I just paid £2 for a copy of Alan Moore’s “Voice Of The Fire.” That’s none too shabby I feel.
Michael Connelly’s The Burning Room in hardback and Hilary Mantel’s Wolf Hall in paperback. 70p the lot. I try to donate something back every week in the form of books I have read, clothes out of fashion (?) and unwanted (spare) records and CDs. Every little helps.
Tuesday’s charity shop haul was fifteen books and eight CDs.
I tend to buy the albums I never bought in the 90s (when I was broke). This week it was mainly Swedish classics by Brainpool, Christian Falk, The Cardigans, Di Leva, Creeps and Garmarna, plus Suede’s debut album and The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.
Not too shabby!

I’ve only had time to read five of those yet, plus being half-way through two more.
(But that’s because I’ve read four other books as well, not from the charity shop haul…)
Alas apart from the bhundu boys album there was nothing that made me want to shell out. Couple more tomorrow but I don’t hold out much hope. I did get a very useful silver topped walking cane from my brother/in/law. Apologies for the curious compound noun but I’ve just got a tablet and I don’t know how to put in dashes.

My sis works in a Sue Ryder shop and last week she let me rifle through all the unsorted vinyl in the back room, where I spied a couple of nice old LP cases which she said I could buy once they’d been priced up in a few days’ time. As it’s half term this week I looked after her daughter (my niece) today, and at the end of the day was “paid” with the two cases! They’re going to house the ‘Christmas’ and ‘Cheese’ sections of my record collection.
I got bored last night and made some labels for them.

Not a charity shop, but I managed to get Benmont Tenches ‘You Should Be So Lucky’ from a HMV bargain bin for £1 this week which feels like a bargain.
Benmont Tench is a definite contender for my all-time favourite name in rock
Every time I nip down to my local Market Street I always call in the Bolton Hospice shop. Their box of LPs rarely improves but today I came away with 5 recent donations in good nick, all at 50p each.
I’m not risking another failure with the photo posting. This soundtrack LP was one of them. I will always take a punt on something I don’t know anything about if the price is right. Also got Lena Zavaroni LP and Elaine Paige Christmas Album.

Fela Kuti – 7 remastered cds, most 2 on 1s plus a couple of Pressure Sounds dub compilations for a tenner

Pharoah Sanders – Karma cd (£3)
2 Pebbles Garage compilation cds(£3 pair)

Lovely! That’s the only word I can find to fully describe it. It has the gentle feel of A Little Touch Of Schmilsson In The Night but without the honey voice, the beautiful arrangements and the coherence of one long melody. Still, his voice crones nicely and the band support sweetly. It gives the impression of an old uncle attempting to impart some of life’s secrets before shuffling off this mortal coil. It is lovely. I can’t see me reaching for it too often, though.

Our library often sells off its old stock.
I picked up a hardback copy of Anthony Lane’s peerless New Yorker reviews ‘Nobody’s Perfect’ for 10p,
Even more astonishing was a hardback copy E F Gombrich’s ‘The Story of Art’. A great book, filled with gorgeous prints. 30p.
I picked up an ex-library copy of Baddha for 1p. Still had the ticket inside – never borrowed, never returned.

The Salterton Trilogy by Robertson Davies was my own particular Moby Dick. Back in the day before the tax-dodging website, books were bought from shops or borrowed/purloined from friend`s shelves. I had read The Deptford and Cornish Trilogies and was hopelessly hooked. As I was living in Madrid, English bookstores were thin on the ground and I had scoured them all in search of The Salterton Trilogy. Wandering past a flea market one Sunday, a pile of unloved and unkempt books caught my eye and, you`ve guessed it !, there it was. Dog-earred and slightly stained. All three books for less than 1 €
RD was wonderful wasn’t he? In the final days of the old site there was a subthread about him and lots of us came out if the woodwork.

Been looking for that Mille record for a while so i’m delighted. Joe’s place is a proper record shop, good prices, friendly owner, labyrinthine structure with rooms with old magazines and music instruments as well as good filing system that’s not immune to giving the odd surprise (like finding NWOBHM band Dark Star’s album in the Motown section).
Seems a good time to plug Charity Shop Classics on 96.9 All FM from Manchester!
The presenters alternate between my good self, and Gavin Hogg of this parish plus our chum James Graham and often featuring special guests – Beany is a regular!
We each have our own take on the chazzer shopping thing. I don’t really have a nose for the novelty /cheesy angle (my colleagues are way better than me at seeking out the outer limits of charity shop cheesiness)
but I kind of like the challenge of the Charity Shop filter (I find myself leaning on obscure indie and 80s pop) and to be honest these days they are often the only places to go music shopping in smaller towns.
Once a month (1st sunday) the rules are relaxed and I present our sister show ‘Thrifty Finds’ which broadens it to 2nd hand shops etc. as some of you have alluded to there is increasingly much gold to be found in the racks unless you’re after the crazily priced rarities.
Hoping to tune in after a morning’s car booting.

Last Emperor? David Byrne – good album. Christ he was on a hot streak in the 80s.
Had to listen to it again. Yes, nice LP, you’d never guess that Byrne is involved though. Instrumental music done straight as incidental backdrop for China, mostly on electric instuments with the occasional downtuned ukulele for authentic colour and no thirds to avoid major/minor tonality. Good pro. He barely gets more than half a side anyway. File under adventures in genre.

These days I mostly go to chazza shops (or op shops as they are known over here), for clothes – I am dressed mostly by op. you get a good class of schmutter.
Don’t buy CDs or vinyl any more. But I do buy books. Mostly of course they cater for people hoping to complete their John Grisham or J K Rowling collections, but yesterday I got a nice haul of really interesting stuff, all for $8 (less than 4 quid). I love Joyce Grenfell and Ben Shahn; the other two I know nothing about, but what’s the worst that can happen?
