He did amazingly well to last as long as he did following his cancer diagnosis, but Wilko Johnson’s Twitter has just announced that he died on Monday. I never got to see the Wilko incarnation of Dr. Feelgood, but will have the warm memories of some great solo gigs to sustain me.

Who? Sorry for breaking the anglocentricity for a second, but if for no other reason than making you listen to one of the best ESC entries of all time, I will give Sweden’s (mostly) one hit wonder a send-off. He came fifth in 1968 (back when you had to sing in your own language) and went on to combining civilian careers with his singing gigs on the side. The classic ESC entry is of course “Det börjar verka kärlek, banne mej” (approx. “Damn, it’s starting to look like love”), with the immortal rhyme of “pang-pang” and “dang-dang”. Died peacefully in his armchair at the age of 77. And let’s try to use the box and see if it works…

A sad day for Brazil. Gal Costa, the much-loved, sensual, versatile yet unmistakeable Brazilian singer has left the building. She was booked to play Nalen in Stockholm tomorrow evening. Sadly the Grim Reaper had other ideas.

Gal was a key figure in the Tropicália movement of the late 1960s, along with Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Maria Bethania and Tom Ze.

”Costa’s self-titled album from 1969 was ”a madcap constellation of Brazilian pop music, psychedelic rock and the avant-garde, her voice not so much the glue but the liquid gold swimming through choppy arrangements and unconventional structures by Veloso and Gil.” (Lars Gorich, NPR)

“Departing with her are the tender voice [and] the encanto do canto, which were always her trademark,” Gilberto Gil shared in Portuguese via video. “Remaining for us is saudade, the sadness, the grief.”

President Elect Lula has posted an elogy on Twitter: a smashing photo of himself hugging Gal and a comment where describes her as “one of the greatest singers in the word.”

I was sorry to read the Kevin O’Neill, probably best know for his distinctive jagged style in 2000 AD’s ABC Warriors and Nemesis the Warlock has died. As a teen I would drool over his superb layouts and the dynamism of his unmistakable artwork.

Low have announced on twitter the death of their wonderful lead singer Mimi Parker. She had ovarian cancer. She had a magnificent voice, and was the partner in life as well as music of the band’s Alan Sparhawk. It’s desperately sad and a terrible loss, above all for Alan and their two children. RIP.

Apologies for the double post, I haven’t been here in a while and didn’t notice an obits section.

Patrick Haggerty was the leader of Lavender Country, the world’s first gay country band. They did one album in the early seventies, just called Lavendar Country and it was ace; I suspect John Grant and Mark Eitzel heard it. Their song “Crying Those Cock Sucking Tears” is just fantastic. He’s died after a stroke at 78
