The Dunedin Consort (“Scotland’s leading baroque ensemble”) put on a Matthew Passion every Easter, which plays well to my OCD tendencies; this is the third year in a row I’ve gone. And it’s just stunning. The Dunedin eschew large choirs etc., in favour of the smaller scale that Bach himself would have used. The interplay of vocals and music is mesmerising. I’m just in awe of that level of talent. All non-amplified too – yet the vocalists managed to fill the hall.
I couldn’t listen to the Matthew Passion every day but there’s something very satisfying about sitting through the whole performance, even for the non-religious such as myself. A transcendent experience.
The audience:
Here’s the curious thing. As in previous years, the Queens Hall was only about 3/4 full, for this world-class event. Mainly, it must be said, people older than my good self – something I found vaguely cheering. It has to be said though that 3 hours plus on the Queens Hall benches is a bit hard on the bahooky – and the prospect of this may have cut down the potential audience.
