Car Boot Christmas 2016

This year’s Car Boot Christmas cloudcast has finally landed. Whether you’re walking the dog, putting up the tree or listening surreptitiously on your ‘phone at work, there’s all sorts of festive music for you to ‘enjoy’, all on vinyl and all rescued from the boot sales and chazzas of deepest Suffolk (plus a Beany surprise). There’s jazz. There are carols. There’s soul, pop and surf. There are, er, Wombles. Use the player below and the tracklist will be revealed to you one joyous piece of music at a time. Sorry about the silly voice.

  6. Good work mini. No, really…listening to it now.

    Christmas is much on my mind at the moment – when I signed up for the Brisbane Chorale I had no idea I was signing up for a midsummer Christmas cheesefest at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre. Rehearsals are well under way, bringing the innocent citizens of Brisbane such warhorses as Do You Hear What I Hear, Little Drummer Boy, When a Child is Born, plus Aussie Jingle Bells (‘Jingle Bells, Jingle Bells, Christmas time is beaut, Oh what fun it is to ride, in a rusty Holden ute’), and a few actual carols. Oh, and this taxing slice of Winter Wonder, which I’d avoided up to now (apols if it’s a favourite).

    • Funnily enough I bought Stevie’s Christmas album from a car boot this year. I’ve yet to give it a spin, but I think I recognise the above track from the Motown Christmas album. No, it’s not a fave, but I’m sure your rendition is just lovely.

      I bet the choir thing is huge fun; there’s nothing like belting out some rousing tunes in a big group.

  8. Maybe some of you like to be reminded of my two crimble mixes – featuring lots of silly voices, crackling noises (OK!), Santa impersonations, and messages from Nelson Wilbury and others.

    • Have an Up Fatima. There are some gems on your playlist. A bayou Xmas is always right.

      Green, Carboot, Fatima: all these totally different Xmases to enjoy! My cup runneth over.

      If one just digs a little deeper, there are so many great Xmas songs. But all the stores play the same 50 or so on constant rotation.Boring!

Those of you of an out-to-lunch Xmas waxings disposition (@beany, @minibreakfast, @fatima-Xberg, @duco01) might like to check out the YouTube channel of some joker who calls himself Cheeseknee Hawkes ‘Mr. Pastry’. He’s gone absolutely gangbusters on deeply obscure Xmas music, as well as the merely deeply obscure, which is what he usually posts. Here’s one of the less offensive offerings.

  10. December Will Be Magic Again….

    There seem to be several different versions. This 7″ is not the same as the version on This Woman’s Work or the one I grew up with, on the 1989 compo It’s Christmas! (very very similar to the Now! Christmas album, but not the same)

    My mother particularly likes the “down the chim-a-neee” bit which sounds like someone doing a KB impersonation and going slightly too far.

    • I like the fact that all the early Kate Bush promo videos and TV appearances are up on YouTube. All those Pebble Mill and TOTP slots. Spend 20 minutes watching these and you conclude that no matter how far you go when doing a KB impersonation, you won’t be able to go nearly as far as she did.
