Well well, he’s resigned.
I’m interested to read in his resignation speech how he puts the interests of FIFA before those of football which kind of sums up the whole sorry mess.
Will the house of cards now come tumbling down ?
Musings on the byways of popular culture
I think this is the beginning of a very long story, for once he looked a very worried man
Expect Blatter to be in custody imminently. Not before time.
What a fantastic week this has been.
Somewhere in New York, John Oliver is drinking a Bud Light Lime, mouth full of McDonalds Dollar Meal and wearing shitty gold trainers
Or rather THIS

I was just thinking of John Oliver when Blatter resigned.
He not only has to drink the Bud he has to say he enjoyed it too.
Looking forward to next week’s episode.
It’s hard to believe that he suddenly cares that his victory was not unanimous, “I do not feel that I have a mandate from the entire world of football” and so he is magnanimously going.
Is he hoping that his voluntary resignation will result in a generous golden handshake that would be completely denied should further revelations force him to go?
To be fair Carl, he’s always been a bit slow on the uptake. It took him months to realise that Qatar gets hot in the summer
It would be nice to think that there will be a prison sentence around the corner, but I think it’s far more likely that a deal has been reached.
I must admit that after his re-election last week I thought he had ridden out the storm.
There was a lot of comment on twitter & the general consensus was that he was toast, so I suppose this shouldn’t be the surprise that it is.
Surely the corrupt old bastard wont face jail time?
Blatt’s All Folks!
He’s resigned, but has he actually gone? Isn’t he still around until later this year? I wonder how different the ‘new’ FIFA will be, if it is packed with Blatterites, unless there’s complete reform.
Of course he’s still around. You can’t expect a new boy to come in and oversee the USA 2015 World Cup at such short notice!
Last week he referred to more sorrow that will follow. I think he’s going to play the frail old man card now and feign bewilderment at the betrayal of his underlings.
Round about now, we should all be looking at who is going to host World Cup 2022. Blatter rushed that process through a few years ago. Why? Well, I think we are about to find out…
2022 World cup – Will this be taken from Qatar & a new bidding process started? To me it was awarded far too early, but taking it away from them – would that be a step too far even for the shiny new Blatter free FIFA ?
Interesting times ahead I think.
It depends on what comes out, I suppose. If, for example, they arranged with FIFA to buy votes and effectively bypass the bidding process – then they do not get to host the tournament.
This reminds me of the 50 Michael Jackson concerts being announced in London. You just knew that, one way or another, this was not going to happen.
That might be complex according to whatever law the contract was signed under. Canceling the contract will lead to FIFA potentially being on the hook for a LOT of cash. The only way they’ll avoid that is if the contract can be voided, and that will be legally messy. And potentially not resolvable in enough time, even assuming FIFA have the stomach for a fight
A lot would depend on what governing law and jurisdiction is specified in the agreement (I’d guess Swiss), but I would imagine that if fraud involving both parties can be proven then the contract will be easily rescinded. It’s hard to imagine any court ordering performance/restitution for a contract entered into under such circumstances.
I assume that some major sponsors and or UEFA presented him with an ultimatum. FIFA is unsustainable without either however they might like to suggest otherwise. I expect a significant power shift in the make up of FIFA as national organisations now have impetus to review the extent to which their own representatives have lined their own pockets and been complicit in the corruption. Economics and footballing status will dictate that Europe and the Americas will come out of this in a dominant position. I expect a certain Frenchman’s beret to be thrown into the ring as soon as talk turns to who should succeed Blatter. I wouldn’t be surprised if someone with strong links to “soccer”, in the USA steps forward, maybe with European links – maybe Klinsmann, Beckenbauer or, who knows, a certain Mr. Beckham.
This is very much the point I think. He will remain there to secure a safe & lucrative exit and ensure “his legacy” is safe. Unless there is some dirt which will implicate him, such as who sanctioned this bribe to Jack Warner. Let’s at least be pleased that this could be the start of something good.
Presumably much of his remaining time there will be spent standing at the shredder!
We should absolutely, categorically and as soon as humanly possibly take the World Cup back off Qatar.
As soon as they prove that the award was hooky, and I have no doubt they will, they should rerun the process and find a more suitable venue.
The North Pole would do in a pinch.
Does that mean an Eskimo team would get an automatic bye into the finals. Ice stadiums with Polar Bears hired for crowd control… it could work.
I think that the “authorities” have something on him… otherwise why would he quit?
presumably not unconnected with the fact that US authorities have announced tonight that he is under investigation – nevertheless it seems he’ll be around until a new election can be held which will apparently be between December this year and May 2016.

This is very enjoyable news. But I’m waiting to see him do the perp walk. Orange jumpsuit, shackles, the works. That will add greatly to the gaiety of nations.
As I said on another thread, rather than ushering in an age of transparency, it may have the effect of concentrating power in a Eurocentric oligarchy, fuelled by money from American behemoths.
You may have your wish for now but life has taught me – be careful what you wish for.
I wonder what’s going to be left when the house comes tumbling down. This is much more than just a few rotten apples in the barrel and I suspect there are many more maggots waiting to move in. They just can’t resist the sweet taste of power, whether it be multi-national corporations, governments or religions.
I’d have thought that is very unlikely. After all, the same people who voted for Blatter will vote on his replacement. His power base has always been Africa and Asia, where there is great mistrust and dislike of the European bloc, due to its hoovering up of players and money (particularly TV rights). Those people won’t vote for FIFA to be run by Europe (and they have the votes to make sure it doesn’t happen).
I always liked Rico. Now they can go after all the other cartels stitching up the world.
