I, too, thought he sounded old, but I think the song works as an old man looking back on a significant event when young. I think when I reviewed The Pogues live show last year I declared it as one of the best songs I have ever heard.
“an old man looking back” well, it fits. Brooce is 76.
One of Shane’s finest and a great reading.
Looking forward to the full album to see how the songs shine in different renderings
One thing (amongst many) that I really like about Bruce is that he is a huge music fan and is quite happy to acknowledge and celebrate other’s work. He was (maybe still is) in the habit of performing a song from an artist appropriate to where he is playing, as well as contributing to albums like this. Good on ‘im…
I confess that when I first saw the thread title my first thought was, gosh, the Boss is doing Shane Fenton. Not such a daft idea though – I’d love to hear him do this.
Better than I anticipated, with Bruce sounding frailer than usual.
Pretty decent cover.
Here’s an RTE article with details of the album…the usual mix of the good, the bad and the awful…no mention (so far) of Nick Cave or Paul Simon.

I should acknowledge that half the proceeds will be donated to the Simon Community…

A beautiful song and a beautiful rendition from the great man
A nice cover of a fine song.
What a phenomenal EP “Poguetry in Motion” is: three out of the four tracks are absolute belters.
Great version and a very poignant video too.
I think Bruce did this in Eire on his last tour.
