It’s clear from the recent camera thread, and various Afterworders I know on Facebook, that many of us enjoy a bit of photography, so let’s see some of your favourite shots. I’m really a point-and-clicker, but I can’t ask you to show me yours without showing you mine so here’s one I took at the end of June when I was in the right place at the right time.
It’s Hans Haacke’s statue Gift Horse which currently occupies the fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square. I couldn’t help but be struck by the way the cloud formation echoes the form of the horse. The Light’s daughter said it looked like the horse’s spirit was leaving its body, but I prefer to think that it looks more like it is cantering down to be reunited with it.
Your turn.

Sorry. I take am taking a lot of photographs at the moment but they are either of my dog or this little chap below. I cannot get enough of him. Love him to bits. He will be 4 months old next week.

Ah, lovely. Big hands – he’s gonna be a bruiser!
Sorry. How do you post photos again?
Upload your picture to Photobucket then copy the ‘direct’ link into your post. I’m sure there are other ways, but that’s an easy one.
This little chap was laughing at me while I was digging the garden. Probably my $5 Ralph Lauren combat gardening trousers.

Use Photobucket. Upload, click on the uploaded pic. It will then enlarge and in top right hand corner click on the word ‘direct’ for direct link. The bar next to it should turn yellow and say ‘copied’. Then just click again in your post and the link will show.

Avoiding a humourous answer for once, yes. From the back of my house.
A fine Thin Place indeed.
The thin place you see as a darker strip is a mid-river island, which belongs to LAO. The fainter horizon is Lao itself, all jungle all the way to Vietnam (not that far). A few years back I was heading northwards (R-L here) on the far bank, going through Lao by bus. Little did I know then, readers, that I would soon be living out here, gazing not altogether unphilosophically across the river at the path of my voyage.
How lovely.

Re. Burma and other places with oppressive regimes, the question of visiting them/tourism often gets questioned. Is one showing friendship and solidarity with the people and helping them economically, or does it all got to the government/junta etc ?
I think the answer is that you are to some extent propping up the regime, but ultimately our money does benefit the people. The year I went to Burma I also visited Uzbekistan and Cuba – three places which are opening up and offering opportunities that their citizens haven’t had. I didn’t feel that I shouldn’t be there, but I also knew that I wasn’t seeing everything.
Yes, that’s the balanced view I think I’d take too.
Wonderful.
Looking forward to some trips to India. A lifelong ambition.
You’ll love India. I’m off there again next month – Jammu and Kashmir.
Lucky you – I tried a few times in the past but it didn’t work out. I’m glad as I think I’ll get far more out of the experience now than in my early twenties, and I don’t fancy back packing or hippy hostels to be honest.
I’ve been fascinated and drawn to Indian culture/history etc since childhood.

I’ve got some connections to Kerala, and one of the things that strike you about the place, which that picture is illustrating, is the mutual tolerance of Muslims, Hindus and Christians. In Cochin, they’re also quite proud of the long-standing Jewish community, which is now fading away. Unsurprisingly, there’s some unease about Modi and his Hindu based nationalism, which hopefully will pass.

Care to expand on what/ where they are?
Well,
– terracotta vases painted with one of those dual tone finishes, at a garden exhibition in Sydney. The summer light is incredible so I didn’t have to goose the saturation much at all, that’s what it looked like in the flesh.
– the inside of an inflatable art installation, looking straight up at the ceiling
– the same inflatable art installation somewhere else round the bend. It was like a billowing flexible stained glass window.
– Sydney Opera house detail
I wasn’t intending them to look like they were joined together, it just my crappy posting skills.
This would also explain my love of the works of a Mr Pencilsqueezer.

This site hates me.
Potential album cover for niece and sister’s troublesome sophomore effort
Just out of the studio. Into the daylight. Definitely one for the ‘difficult second album’ cover.
OK, quiet afternoon, so I’ll bite – if I can get the sodding link to work. If not, could it be my Mac 10.6.8/Safari 5.1.10 browser is no longer compatible with Photobucket? Advice welcome. I’ll try …………….
A ‘conceptual’ test shot (far from finished) inspired by The Afterwords very own Salwarpe from his much missed series of artworks (was it ‘Work In Progress” ?).
http://s1290.photobucket.com/user/attackdog2/media/Iron%20Test%203%20Final.lores_zpsatwgcwqh.jpg.html” target=”_blank”>
I don’t think that’s why – my browser is no longer compatible and Photobucket clearly tells me so on their front page. Since TinyPic doesn’t work on this site I managed to get Imgur to work a few times, but now it also refuses to upload my photos, so that’s probably the browser’s fault as well.
And please don’t advise me to change my browser – trust me, I’ve tried, but my computer just won’t do it. I tried to buy a new computer a year ago, ran into some annoying problems and aborted the whole project eventually, after losing my patience…I’m slowly feeling ready to try again, perhaps. Nothing saps all energy and joy from me like a tech-rage, and computers have an uncanny knack for turning me into a swearing, teeth-gnashing, fist-hammering monster. My current mouse is the latest victim of such a violent attack, thus opening multiple unecessary windows every time I left-click anything these days. 🙁
Hooray! Posting that really reminded me that I had to do something about this, as it was getting more and more difficult each week to get things to work with my obsolete browser…so I did something I’ve been putting off for a while; removing some stuff on my computer that was a probable cause for my difficulties in uploading a new browser.
Then I tried – again – to upload Firefox, and unlike the previous try it didn’t fail mid-through this time, I got my new and up-to-date browser, and hey-presto! imgur kindly wants to upload photos from my computer again.
So, testing, one-two:
Just to see if I still know how to do it; that should be a photo of Swedish electro pop star Jenny Lewis and her cool sister on the guitar, a rather blurred photo but a cool pose.
Taken last year at Stockholm Music & Arts festival – only two days until this year’s festival kicks off!

Hubert,
Many thanks. I really don’t know what it is I’m doing wrong. I do follow the advice here to click the ‘direct’ link. The problem (if that is all it is) is that I cannot see on the Photobucket page a link named ‘direct’. But thank you again.
@attackdog my reply is below hope it’s of help.
I also can’t see the word “direct” anywhere
@cookieboy I think think I may have ‘cracked’ the ‘Direct Link’ issue.
In Photobucket, once in your library or ‘Your Bucket’, on the right hand side of the page adjacent to ‘Share Links’ is a ‘Settings’ icon. Click this.
Once in settings select and click ‘Direct Link’, scroll to the bottom of the page and hit ‘Save’.
The ‘Direct Link’ will now appear as an option under each of your thumbnail images in ‘Your Bucket’
No more Photobucket Direct Link misery!
We’ll see about that!
I did everything you suggested I clicked this and saved that
This is hopefully from St Petersburg Russia

@attackdog
it works!
Thank you very much!
@attackdog – one of the Macs I use to post here is running the same OS and browser as you, and is fine.
It sounds like you might have a problem with Safari’s ‘Cache’, or History, or the cookies that Photobucket puts on your mac.
Try these; Safari/Empty Cache for the first; History/Clear History for the second, and Safari/Preferences/Privacy/Cookies & other website data/Details for the third – look for Photobucket cookies, delete them, and then Quit Safari and restart the mac. You will have to reenter any Photobucket passwords when you next visit their site.
I find that some websites will deprecate (give out of date messages to) Safari 5. YouTube does, also Flickr, but you can click through usually and carry on.
Photobucket does behave oddly at times, even when I use up to date software to access it. If I add to my Library, it often won’t display the photo until my next visit.
If the Safari advice above doesn’t work – apologies if you’ve tried them already – it might be another Cache issue on the Mac. it would be worth clearing the other caches, using a utility like OnyX or Applejack.
Many thanks GCU. I’ll give your suggestions a try.
I think that once you’ve uploaded you need to click on the photo on the uploaded page, that should open up the page with the links to copy on.

Off topic, but it’s an unexpected bonus of my Google Chromecast that, when idle, it displays an amazing selection of photographs and some art in full tv size. I only use it for a couple of things as a video/ music player (it’s a lot more limited here than in the U.S.) so I’m surprised they don’t make a bigger deal of the hi def photo gallery as a selling point*
(*maybe all players do similar – I wouldn’t know as I only have this one.

This isn’t the best photo ever taken, but it is one that resonates in my life. It was taken in September 2003 when Heather and I were doing the Tour de Mont Blanc. We were on the Italian side between Courmayeur and the Swiss border. We’d set out from the Bertone hut in thick mist (having endured a terrible night’s sleep due to a snoring German!) and we’d just popped out of the mist onto a summit with spectacular views of Mont Blanc and the Dent du Geant and les Grandes Jorasses. We were all alone for over half an hour and it was fantastic.

Apparently it’s good on the bin…..if you sit up you can see over the wall; and if you crouch down, you can hide…….
Lots of talent out there in Afterwordland. Thanks for all your pics. Here’s another of mine which I hope demonstrates that not having a clue what you’re doing can add to the effect. This is Charles Bridge in Prague on a misty might, though not as misty as it looks here. My cheap camera couldn’t cope with the low light, but I like the blurred effect, and the two figures walking away turn the snap into a story. I have always thought that this one would make a good book jacket.

Hip hip hoobloodyray. Here’s another one I made earlier.
So the more of your work I see (here and your site), the more I draw a straight line between my Spirograph fixation as a child, to my own adult geometric addiction (see above), and through a very wide gulf to this sort of hugely technical structured stuff, and why it appeals so much to an OCD second-hand pattern-peddler like me.
That’s supposed to be a compliment by the way. The middle bit anyway. Love your work.
Most kind of you Harold.
