It seems we have a British world heavyweight boxing champion.

I didn’t even know there might be one…I only have peripheral interest in the sport which can never be called a game…though when I was a kid, fights by Ali, Frazier etc were mainstream television. Of course the alleged corruption and multiplicity of WBO/A/X/Y/Z has degraded it badly. I can imagine some of you out there blanching at the very thought of watching boxing, but there’s something compelling about it…even the Benn/Eubank duels were exciting…I might have watched it if it had been on terrestrial. Here’s Ali, roping a dope

Wireless 5Live were (as on so many occasions) superb in their commentary for tight sods, like me, who won’t pay extra to watch on the telly.

Speaking of which, eye-brow raising item on R5 Live just now looking at how Fury’s win might be positive for the image of Travellers. I was left puzzled as to how the achievements of a bloke who earns his living fighting and is given to homophobic and other reactionary rants was going to do much in terms of challenging stereotypes.

Great commentary on Radio 5 as mentioned above – didn’t give him a chance so fair play to the guy!

What other job could a guy called Tyson Fury have done?

@leedsboy Best comment on the match I have read.

Shame ‘Arry isn’t still with us because he may have said… ‘Get in there Tyson!’.

As someone just commented on a phone-in, it is hard to imagine people being quite so relaxed about some of Fury’s more controversial views if he was a footballer.

It’s a sign of the modern day cult of personality that anyone cares what a sportsman’s opinions are anyway. I’m happy to separate the sportsman from the man otherwise it just gets crazy.
