Hello all Bowie peoploids! Just a quick note to say the latest episode of my sporadic Albumtoalbum series is out now, the second in a three parter featuring the mighty Nicholas Pegg – loquacious author of ‘The Complete David Bowie’ and wonderfully erudite and knowledgeable source of all things Jones, getting well and truly stuck into the fabulous 1995 epic ‘Outside’. If you enjoy the pod, please do share! Thanks and enjoy 🙂

I love them all. However, no Aladdin Sane yet. Searching on the Internet doesn’t yield many reviews/reappraisals of it either. I’m beginning to think it’s an overlooked gem. For me, it’s definitive Bowie.
Problem for Aladdin Sane is it’s sandwiched between Ziggy and Diamond Dogs. It’s a good ‘un but it ain’t no Low or Heroes
(can you guess at my preferred Bowie persona?)
I’ve a soft spot for Aladdin Sane. I think of it as Ziggy goes to America. And it’s got some absolute 24 carat bangers on it. Title track, Drive In Saturday, Time, Prettiest Star, Lady Grinning Soul. Song for song, it beats Ziggy, hands down.
Yet no one has chosen it, oddly
And the Jean Genie! How could I forget the best Bowie glam stompathon
Don’t like Time or the Stones cover either, Watch That Man is pretty average. Some really great tracks, but not quite a great Bowie album for me. Production a bit poor too, I think you can hear that it was a rather rushed effort.
The Stones cover is awful and agree that Watch That Man and Panic In Detroit are average songs. The rest is absolutely great though. I also hate the cover.
I cannot agree about the production. The vinyl first pressing sounds amazing. Bowie has been ill served by reissues – all Cd versions of Alladin Sane are dreadful.
The album that has grown the most in stature over the years is Diamond Dogs, also needs to be heard as a first pressing I’m afraid.
I loved it. It was the last Bowie album I really got into. I lost interest to a great extent after that. Dipped back in for “Let’s dance” but I fell out of love with the whole shtick. But AS still sounds great.
I think Aladdin Sane may be unique in ‘botworld for being an album I do really like where I think the opening tracks on both sides are well ropey…
I’m very fond of Watch That Man. It mimics Exile’s murky mix, all the instruments turned up to the max, swamping the vocals. The backing singers are clearer than Bowie. It’s a Rock & Roll party song full of poseurs, cocaine mirrors and people working the room. The drums clatter along pleasingly. Ronson’s guitars dominate, attacking the listener from all sides. Garson introduces himself by politely interrupting the conversation. And the lyric is full of meaty, pithy phrases. He could eat you with a fork and spoon.
I’m with you Tigs. I think it’s a swaggery Stonesy sexy glam stompa
I’m sure I’ve read interviews where Bowie considered it to be ‘Ziggy in America’ too.
I enjoy them all greatly but I tend to binge-listen to podcasts when I’m doing mundane stuff like gardening or decorating. So my responses are usually late.
Keep up the excellent work.
Released today – first of six tracks to come for streaming at weekly intervals….nine track physical release for RSD in April.
