I am disappoint.
There were loads of tantalising clips of live performances from TOTP, OGWT, Later, Parkinson and so on. None lasted much more than a minute. Other than that, we had a fair amount of official videos that we can all view elsewhere. And news features. Nothing makes more excited than a news reader making an announcement. Bowie provided a voice over, cut from a variety of interviews, some of which looked, when pictures were shown, very interesting.
I expecting to see full performances of songs at various points of career. As an example, I’ve added one in this post. Sadly, that did not happen. I would happily buy a DVD of all of his performances at the Beeb but I won’t be watching this again.
There was one astonishing moment. Jools Holland asked a good question!
Must admit I was slightly disappointed too.
Although there was a fair bit of stuff I hadn’t seen, the “new” material was all too fleeting, as Tiggs says. And there were some strange anachronisms, eg “Wild Is The Wind” being attributed to 1981, when it was released as a single off the “Changestwobowie” compilation, rather than 1976 [and not even a BBC film clip at that]. I could still watch this kind of thing all day, though.
The more I see him, the more I miss him – like really really miss him. “No Plan” is a heartache to listen to now.
I think the attributions referred to the time the clips in question were filmed, rather than the original release of the track.
I’d have been happier with a programme twice the length, with the music clips played in full. Some very interesting interview clips though. Never knew before that he’d been on Parkinson.
I have to say the anniversary has brought it all back, like a real bereavement. I still feel quite raw about it.
Stupid bastard, it’s only a pop star.
No, Moose. It’s not only a pop star. Let it all out, mate. I’m going through the same thing. As I said above, the longer he’s gone the harder it gets. I knew he was important culturally, but the more archive/retrospection I see, the more important he gets.
Someone on twitter said that Bowie was the glue that held everything together. He or she may have a point. Although ‘Heroes’ is one of my personal faves, I’m not a fan. His death certainly affected me, though. As did Victoria Wood’s, and Jo Cox’s. What a shitty year 2016 was.
Apologies for the missing words in the OP. I was being hassled. Still, you get my drift.
No need to say sorry. I secretly enjoyed your opening sentence and almost replied “I am slight disappoint, also.” Nothing makes more excited than a typo which sound like English being second language. In any case, I easily please.
You are the Godfather, you can do what like.
Excellent! I love your pisstake in the third sentence with a deliberately absent ‘me’, just as in my OP. Bravo! 😉
I read it in the voice of Harry Enfield’s character, Stavros . Needed to follow it with “..and most deeply trub, matey peeps”
Is a stress! You make me depress!
I thought the “I am disappoint” bit was deliberate.
Nothing I do is ‘deliberate’. 😀
I wasn’t expecting full performances in an hour-long career overview, but it did seem a bit of a waste to use so many well-worn clips in amongst the more tantalising ones.
P.S. Low is 40 years old today.
I only saw a few minutes but if you want the performances in full many are in The Complete Bowie. Thought it looked a good way to do a career overview
Do you mean the Best Of DVD?
Er yes.
I’ve fished it out. There ain’t that much really, mostly official videos.
Oh! You Pretty Things, Queen Bitch & Five Years from OGWT, TOTP live performances of Starman & Rebel Rebel (Jean Genie was mimed), Drive In Saturday from The Russell Harty Show plus an interview with Russell and an alternative version of Pretty Things. There is also Young Americans on The Dick Cavett Show but that’s not the Beeb.
There is Later and Parkinson in the can at least. Perhaps a refresh would make money for someone. I’d be in the queue to buy.
Yes disappointed too
I was fully expecting full clips as per usual with the at the bbc lark
Can go to YouTube for interview s and vids
But it wasnt a bad little prog all the same
Never saw that wild is the wind vid before
Surprised there was no mention of Baal as that was for the BBC.
Or his appearance on Extras
Just as well. Wouldn’t want to be reminded of that crappy ‘comedy’ show.
Here’s the full Parky show from ’02. Check out the Jagger impression around the 29 minute mark.

Actually talks about his mother immediately after this Wow!
And later on, a Ronno impression.
Couldn’t work out what the show’s purpose was. By any definition it was poor.
Not the Beeb, but Musikladen in 1978 rebroadcast.
