And itās a phone free tour, where you have to have your phone locked in a pouch upon arrival. I wish more concerts were like this, as I get fed up having to to try to see through a sea of phones and even iPads on occasion.
The reason for the Hull gig will become clear, and things will really kick off ,half way through when it finally becomes clear he is attempting a full set of Watersons covers, with Bob attempting all four harmony vocals simultaneously
Should I make the (solo) trek from Newcastle to Glasgow for this? This would be my first time seeing him and I assume will quite likely the last chance to see him play over here. I love the first 20 or so years of his career and am a bit foggy about the rest but I loved Rough and Rowdy Ways.
Is it worth the trek/expense? The earlier leg of the tour seemed to be acclaimed as his best shows in years, IIRC.
I made the āthis could be my first/last chance to see himā mistake back in 1997. Still one of the worst gigs Iāve ever been to – I think he was singing in Swedish at one point.
Around then I remember Q describing one of his gigs as ‘an increasingly challenging game of Name That Tune in which the contestants frequently included his own band’.

Someone’s got it in for me, they’ve been planting stories in the PressbyrĆ„n
Blonde on extremely blonde
That was then, possibly the low period – even I vowed to stop going to shows, but thank God I didn’t coz, this is now. Plenty of stuff online to assess current performances. He plays mainly the latest album as he can’t do most of the old stuff. Especially since doing those standards albums he has really prioritised diction.
I have seen about 13 or 14 Dylan shows. The worst one was in 1987 with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. He was clearly totally out of it.
1984 at Wembley was good, I also thought he was very good around the start of this century Last time I saw him (2017) it was pretty mediocre but had a few moments of brilliance. Reviews are pretty good right now, but don’t expect too much and catch him on a good night and it may be worthwhile. I would probably go one more time if he played near me
“he has really prioritised diction”…. this presents the image of Dylan doing vocal warm-ups backstage in the manner of an Edwardian actor-manager:
“Mi mi mi mi mi mi mi mi
Peter Piper Picked a Pillbox-hat of Pickled Peppers
He thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts”
(this last has always sounded like Dylan to me anyway)
Disappointing that apart from the Palladium it’s all arenas. Last time I saw him was in 2015 at Manchester Apollo and it was great. The time before was 2011 at the barn that is the Manchester Arena and it was awful. There will be no screens, no exciting lighting design and certainly no ‘Good evening Hull – let’s rock!’ I won’t be going to any of these and if he does play either Manchester or Liverpool arenas I think I will still pass.
I don’t think it’s that bad, tbh. I’ve been to much worse (Newcastle Arena, I’m looking at youse). It’s large, of course, but can’t be considered one of yer enormodomes. I remember when it opened, the consensus was that it’s too small to attract the major acts; that hasn’t proved to be the case.
I kinda meant when it was in the planning/construction stages. Van was another coup…I remember ATM whether I should go. I think I made the right call in not doing so.
From what I hear you did. Friend of mine was there and described it as an artist going through the motions in an unmistakably provincial (ie second-rate) venue.
I’ve already been asked about the Zimster and my answer was I’d rather hammer six-inch nails into my face. Well I might be busy that night….(.whichever one it is)
“I thought you liked Bob Dylan”
“The connection between liking Bob Dylan and actually wanting to go to one of his gigs is…..complicated“
Yep. Whilst other Bobcats and curious civilians (TMFTL) will be stuck there thinking ‘WTF’ I’ll be on the North York Moors Railway ‘Light Spectacular Express’, waving my LED bangle in the air like I just don’t care!
I donāt know how they rate for atmosphere, but Iāve just looked them up and Glasgow only seats 3000 and Hull 3500 (which is the same as Manchester Apollo). Theyāre not enormodomes.
I’m probably about midway between Hull and Glasgow but I think the Armadillo just about has it over the Hull Bonus Arena, which looks like a giant B&Q.
I’d never heard of the Armadillo until a couple of hours ago but it looks pretty decent for a modern venue. I’d be hoping that Glasgow could provide the atmosphere and the hall take care of the acoustics.
I passed in the end – Ā£85 for the upper balcony exceeded my level of interest. I have seen him before so he’s ticked off the list, but I guess it’s the recordings for me from now on.
I spoke to my Dad about this and he said that Dylan might have chosen Hull thinking of Mick Ronson. It would be nice to think that’s true and that he’ll do a Ronno tour when he’s here, the same way he does with other artists, alive and dead. (Didn’t he once park outside the house where Springsteen was born, or did I dream that?)
He also did the National Trust tour in Liverpool visiting John and Paul’s houses. Some of the passengers were a bit bemused when he got on the mini bus
I’ve been listening to a show from last month and it’s great, honestly. It’s mainly Rough and Rowdy Ways but with a few somewhat reconfigured oldies thrown in, plus a cover of The Grateful Dead’s Friend of the Devil, which admittedly took me a few minutes to recognise. As @Junior Wells says above, the new material sounds tremendous live, due in no small part, I’m sure, to it having been written for his voice as it is now. I’m really looking forward to it.

8th November for the book I believe @chinstroker

Never mind the (expected) four in London, he’s doing one in ‘ULL!

Good choice.

Appropriate as it is the Rough and Rowdy ways tour.

@seanioio
You’re a liar!
Even if you did, he wouldn’t hear you all the way over in Hull

I can’t believe he’s playing Hull.
What have we ever done to him?

Good choice.

Arf!
Good point though, he’s probably aware of the Carthy-Watersons connection.
Of course he may also be wanting to visit the Grafton Arms and think deeply about the Housemartins. Hull 4, Duluth 1.

The London Palladium is a lovely venue, I saw Tori Amos, The Divine Comedy and The Blue Nile there, all with pristine sound.
Gatz says
Agreed. I’ve seen The Unthanks and Richard Thompson they recently and the sound was excellent, and even at the back of the gods the views are decent.
dai says
I would imagine tickets will be extremely pricey though
Gatz says
I dare say. I’ll look as soon as booking opens, but set an as-yet-to-be-decided limit on what I’ll pay.
yorkio says
They’re Ā£60.90 – Ā£105.70 for Glasgow. Dunno how that will translate to the other venues.
Moose the Mooche says
Local economic conditions will be factored in. So the Hull tickets will be 65 pence.
Jaygee says
In fairness, Moose, that’s the Platinum VIP package and you get a fadge from Arnotts on the way home
Moose the Mooche says
Special rates for pattie slappers
Black Type says
Hull Arena have/has said they’re ‘from’ Ā£75 + fees.
Moose the Mooche says
Blimey, that’s like 75 packets of smuggled Drum tobacco on Spring Bank
ernietothecentreoftheearth says
They will have to pay the locals more than that to go

The SEC Armadillo is brilliant. Confusingly, it’s part of the same site as the SEC centre, which is rubbish (a big echoey metal barn).
