A (female) friend of a friend says MM is an absolute sweetie. But then they always are, aren’t they?
There’s actually quite a lot of aggression in the Bluto’s songs, despite the namby-pamby image. It would be difficult to listen to now, if that many people were interested.
Your first point is key. Emotionally abusive and controlling people are charming; that’s a key part of their ability to manipulate. Of course that can make it impossible for the bystander to distinguish them from those who are just genuinely nice people.
I’ve never seen the Bluetones, but saw him as MD for Matt Berry’s band at The Garage. Support came from Pugwash – a great night that’s been a bit tainted. I’m interested to see if MM responds to this, either legally or in print as it’s pretty damming and awful for the women involved.
I’ve known a couple of minor musicians who seemed to use their ‘look at me, I am famous’ status to manipulate people. Indeed I may even have been manipulated by them (not sexually, but getting me to run around helping them for nothing). We afford far too much respect to some of these asshats.
But honestly, I don’t want to derail this thread. There are some odious people out there and we should call them out. We need to listen to the victims and make sure that their stories are heard.
One of Morriss’s girlfriends clearly got her own back though, because some time before the band first came to the public’s attention my flatmate went away for the weekend, and when he came back he asked me if I had heard of the Bluetones. When I said I hadn’t he told me that I would, because they are recording and big things are expected of them. When I asked him how he had heard of them, being that he knew nowt about music, he told me that he had just spent the night with the lead singer’s girlfriend, the randy old sod.
I knew the lads in the band back in my London days not long before they made it and on the fringes of their time at the top. My bobbing head can be seen in the crowd when they played Later. They were a nice bunch of young lads. This reads like total abuse of status with a complete disregard for anyone but himself. What a totally amoral sleazebag. I feel so sorry for the multiple victims of his abuse but also for rest of the band and their fans. A happy musical legacy destroyed. Sleazy Bed Track indeed…
Back in the day I once had to tell Mark that the new Bluetones album wasn’t selling. I remember the look of disappointment on his face as he realised it was all over. Always felt kind of sorry for him. Not anymore
Jings, that’s a terrible story…
Awful, just awful.

Btw, when I said “accuser” I meant in the legal sense, M’lud.
What I meant was “victim”.
Well that’s surely the end of a career that’s already been steadily ebbing away for years isn’t it?
I suspect Slight Return has had its last weekly run-out on 6music.

He has.

I think we’ve found out what your favourite word is.
Only an asshat would say that. Gorts!
