The Manics are on tour in the USA. Actually coming very close to me, with a ticket priced at a very reasonable $25.
I have much of the early canon, as well as the obligatory Greatest Hits. But I’m a bit undecided about whether or not to go.
Anyone seen them recently? If so, would you recommend going to see them?

Tuesday 17th February 2015 will be recorded in the Ancient Annals of Afterwordia as the day on which, phoenix-like, the Afterword flew from the Frying Pan of Despond and became once again a golden pancake of hope for the world.
But now we are all gathering here again, shouldn’t we be doing something big?
Bringing about world peace? Saving the whale? Protecting Mother Earth from a fiendish alien invasion?
Sorry! Far too ambitious. Those are jobs for chaps who wear their underpants over their tights.
But what task is appropriate for the mighty men and women of the Afterword?

Very close to exhaustion, having trodden water in the Ocean Of The Lost And The Damned for three months, I spotted the Salvage Vessel and hauled myself aboard, only to lie on the foredeck waiting for someone to rub me down. Has anybody got a towel? In the meantime, I’ll be popping over to Rafferty’s cabin to have a fruit tea, so you know where to find me. I think I can hear a few voices I recognise…

Stepping out of my Time Machine this morning, having popped into the latter half of the century to get some REALLY fresh milk for breakfast from the village GrubOmatic, I chanced upon a copy of the day’s newskindle. Scanning the main story, I was reminded that the UK as a political entity will cease to exist in just a few years time, to languish under military rule for many years:
Back in good old 2015, tucking into buttered crumpets and real coffee over a printed copy of the Grauniad, I pondered that we could take all sorts of liberties with our politics in the coming election, reasoning that it won’t really matter anyway, given the approaching coup.
Then I thought that perhaps it’s this very sense of hopelessness to come that has somehow already seeped back from the future, colliding with today’s own political torpor and disgust to create a brew that will likely deliver an ineffective cobble of a government, unable to prevent any slide towards totalitarianism.

The Afterword is back! Time for a party!
At this moment, on the other side of the Atlantic, some of the best parties on the planet are happening.
Yesterday, it being Pancake Day, Mardi Gras and Carnival, we had a thread on the music from those amazing celebrations over on The Lifeboat. I was particularly chuffed at finding this wonderful clip of soca star Super Blue performing in front of an ecstatic Caribbean crowd. It captures the atmosphere perfectly. I love the strongmen in their swimming trunks and the guy on stilts.
But can you imagine a crowd of 10,000 Afterworders all jumping up and down waving their hankies like madmen? Or can you imagine yourself wearing a bejewelled thong, pasties and a large feather head dress?
Some things just don’t travel very well however hard you try. There is a samba troupe here in Stockholm. The girls are gorgeous, they have beautiful outfits and the music is great. But somehow, when you are freezing and covered in goosebumps, it’s a little difficult to let Bacchanalian abandon take over.
Any other examples of cultural events which do not travel well?
Anybody here been to Mardi Gras or Carnival?

I wanted to use my / our return to this lovely place to pay tribute to Gavin Clark, who died on Monday.
A beautiful singer and writer, who gave so much joy as part of Sunhouse, Clayhill, UNKLE and the soundtracks to Shane Meadows’ films.
This short film was made by Shane for his best mate back in 2009.
If you’ve not heard his gorgeous voice, get hold of last year’s kind-of-best-of “Beautiful Skeletons”.
I’ll miss him very much.

What does it sound like?:
Natalie Prass possesses a fragile, feminine voice. On this, her debut, it is swept along by Schmilsson strings and topped by ripe, cherry horns. Over nine songs, she delicately and gracefully picks the bones of a failed relationship. It is a delicious, featherlight confection, cleverly disguising the splintering in her heart. Matthew E. White, her old school chum, provides the label, Spacebomb, the orchestra, the brass and the producer. I doubt it is entirely altruism as the retro smokey-soul sound suits the house style precisely. The quality of the writing and performance should easily repay his investment. It’s a pity the album was shelved for two years whilst White promoted his own Big Inner, yet poor Natalie is left with a window of only a few months until he releases his follow up. In the meantime, please don’t overlook this little gem. It takes a confident, precise performer to pitch such emotional vulnerability against a swelling thirty-six piece orchestra. I am sure by the year end, there will be few albums so coherent, so luscious and so effective in impact.
