The Yes v Pink Floyd thread started by my good friend Baskerville has prompted me to start the versus debate that ends all versus debates. The Who v Led Zeppelin.

Now, the natural reaction of most classic rock fans would be “Oh come on, its Zeppelin, for goodness sake, what are you on?”. The sheer power of that band and its constituent elements, the riffs, the anthems, their legend and mysticism, Page’s masterly arrangements, Plant’s blues howl, the front man template that launched a thousand imitators. JP Jones, the musician’s musician. Bonham, nuff said!.

I’m not so sure. I set out my case for The Who.

Pete Townshend was, and remains, much more of a visionary than Page. Right from The Who’s early days he steered the band from mod popsters, through the rock opera masterpiece that was Tommy, via the peerless Who’s Next (which was must surely be the only No 1 album that emerged out of a failed rock opera concept – Lifehouse), and onto Quadrophenia which is far ahead of anything Page and Plant could have dreamed up in front of a roaring fire in Bron y Aur.

I’ve just been introduced to this on Twitter (by @tattooed_mummy), and it’s addictive: it only works if you’re typing on a device which gives you suggested words. All you do is type a letter (or a word), and then choose a word your phone/tablet/whatever suggests, then keep doing it. What I like particularly is that your own phone will have its own suggestions, based on what you’ve typed before. Mine is also liable to switch to German at the drop of a hat, as I occasionally do fb posts and tweets in German.

I am aware that some of you will have *absolutely* no idea what I’m talking about; but if you want to join in the fun, here’s my first effort:

Whilst removing frost from the car windscreen this morning, I found myself singing The Jam’s “Scrape Away”.

I went shopping, and when we returned couldn’t find the bread. “Where Did Our Loaf Go?”

Spent late morning/early afternoon in the garden. I was singing in my head “Pruning Back The Hedge” (to the tune of Talking Heads “Burning Down The House”

Hoovering needed doing, and I had the urge to grow a moustache and sing about how I yearned to get away from domestic mundanity (I can report there was no urge to dress up in drag (honest!)).

I’m doing everything the FAQs says to do to post an image but getting no joy. I’m going to try again.

It feels almost churlish to raise it given all the hard work that’s gone on to get us back home again, but is there any chance of putting the logo back on the site, or getting a new one.

It just feels slightly bare and functional with just the bold “Afterword” lettering at the top.

I already had these “in the can” when the site did a flounce and thought I’d revive it for the next few weeks. Work commitments will make it difficult to go back to one a week but I should be able to do a few more over the coming months. Went to see him give a Q&A at a screening of that Dexys film a few months back. He was a right moody git. Wouldn’t talk about anything that happened in the past and my mate was chosen to ask a question and he decided to stroke his ego and Kev responded with that “Yes ,I am a genius” line he’d been waiting to use all night. Saying that he happily posed for photos after,not many were in a hurry to ask though and I had a 2 minute chat with him about ex-Wolves player Peter Knowles.

I’m sure the presenters on a festival jolly are having a whale of a time. I’m sure the punters that saw Mogwai last night really did enjoy themselves but ironically it seems to me that as soon as the 6Music Festival started, there seems to be far far more talk on the station. There’s normally far more talk for a station with Music in their name than I would like but it’s gone a bit overboard this weekend. Of course it may be that it’s just particularly boring talk and there’s not actually any more of it at all! If that’s the case, then I apologise!
