Musings on the byways of popular culture

Back in the days before Twitter allowed us to find out what they were having for breakfast, pop stars could be quite mysterious and there was no act quite as mysterious as Kraftwerk. After they released their albums, they would invariably carry out a perfunctory bit of promotional work (usually, if memory serves, on the TV science show ‘Tomorrow’s World’) and maybe do the odd concert, after which they would retreat to their studios in Dusseldorf (the splendidly named Kling Klang) to start work on their next project, or maybe that should be projekt. When I say they ‘started work’, that would have been a guess. In those days, we had no idea what those mysterious Germans got up to. Years would pass; pop fashions and prime-ministers would come and go, but Kratfwerk wouldn’t even answer the phone. What were they working on? New music? Testing new synthesisers? Building robots? Constructing a time machine? Or perhaps a combination of all of the above? It turns out, according to David Buckley’s biography, that they were quite often goofing around with gizmos, enjoying coffee and pastries or indulging in that most rock and roll of pastimes, cycling. Their imperial phase » Continue Reading.
I’m very excited to have just received the new Public Service Broadcasting LP in the post – reversible gatefold sleeve, opaque vinyl, lovely booklet and great pictures.
I’ve just shared a photo on the AW Facebook page, but I’m very reluctant to have to sign up to a new thing and work out how it works so that I can post photos to it, which I can then post on this blog. So you’ll have to make do with a youtube video of their next single.
The magnificent Ms Gråbøl was on the Skavlan talk show last night. (She was speaking in Danish but mercifully there were Swedish subtitles.)
We are already big fans and she managed to further consolidate her status as one of the most intelligent thoughtful actresses of our time. Nice sense of humour too.
She talked at some length and with great honesty about her year struggling against breast cancer. She pulled no punches and was frank about how difficult it was to be brave and heroic and accept help from other people. It was a great relief for her to be part of an ensemble when filming Fortitude. http://www.independent.co.uk/news/people/profiles/life-after-the-killing-sofie-grbl-is-set-to-star-in-new-sky-atlantic-drama-fortitude-9966023.html
I’ve posted a clip from her first movie. You all speak fluent Danish, eh?

It feels almost churlish to raise it given all the hard work that’s gone on to get us back home again, but is there any chance of putting the logo back on the site, or getting a new one.
It just feels slightly bare and functional with just the bold “Afterword” lettering at the top.
I already had these “in the can” when the site did a flounce and thought I’d revive it for the next few weeks. Work commitments will make it difficult to go back to one a week but I should be able to do a few more over the coming months. So here’s a mix of the songs covered by Kev both solo and with Dexys. enjoy,
Went to see him give a Q&A at a screening of that Dexys film a few months back. He was a right moody git. Wouldn’t talk about anything that happened in the past and my mate was chosen to ask a question and he decided to stroke his ego and Kev responded with that “Yes ,I am a genius” line he’d been waiting to use all night. Saying that he happily posed for photos after, not many were in a hurry to ask though and I had a 2 minute chat with him about ex-Wolves player Peter Knowles.
The debate goes on. We can’t leave it alone. It keeps bubbling up to the surface no matter what we do to keep it down. So this is it. The ultimate discussion on this persistent topic. Which band has been the most influential: Yes, or Pink Floyd?
The big man has died. Perhaps better known as a writer of great soul music (just ask Aretha), his songs liven up every party. He had a great ‘gutbucket’ voice. It makes perfect sense that his backing group were called The Goodtimers.
Let’s celebrate the joy the man liked to spread by posting your favourites. I’ll start with the obvious one, See Saw.

I’m sure the presenters on a festival jolly are having a whale of a time. I’m sure the punters that saw Mogwai last night really did enjoy themselves but ironically it seems to me that as soon as the 6Music Festival started, there seems to be far far more talk on the station. There’s normally far more talk for a station with Music in their name than I would like but it’s gone a bit overboard this weekend. Of course it may be that it’s just particularly boring talk and there’s not actually any more of it at all! If that’s the case, then I apologise!
This is something I started posting over on the Facebook page and received some good comments so thought I would try it hear.

What does it sound like?:
A traditional blues title for a traditional dirty blues stomping set of songs highlighting the usual underworld characters of Steve Earle, whose lived a hard- nosed blues life himself. Less of the country-tinged themes of the last few albums, the Dukes rock out – would sound great live!
What does it all *mean*?
White men can sing the blues afterall!
Goes well with…
Drink, Drink, a Drink….with a bourbon chaser

1. If I reply to a comment, it appears as a reply to the OP rather than the comment I was replying to (eg see my comment on DFB’s comment about the Bonzo’s/Rutles in IanP’s “Who you going to see” post. Can we fix this? Otherwise my comment doesn’t necessarily make sense.
2. I saved a New Blog Post as a draft, because I couldn’t work out how to post a photo. (Still can’t). But then when I went to “Post a Blog”, I kept getting my previous, saved one. Can this be sorted? Does this make sense?
BTW I of course appreciate the great work all the admin folks are doing. PLEASE can we donate something?
Peter Gabriel tried with Cameras. I say we swamp the whole fucking arena with Electric Guitars. Who’s with me?
A post that has lots of words I start to panic.

Never did get the chance to enthuse about this Box Set as the pub burned down before I managed to compose anything.
Brought to you be the compilers of the excellent Scared To Get Happy: A Story Of Indie-Pop ’80-’89 Set, this 4 CD set celebrates an often overlooked period of music, often unfairly referred to as “The Jam and some other bands. Oh, and Quadrophenia too”. All the big names are here: Secret Affair, The Chords, Purple Hearts, Squire, Merton Parkas The Jam do not appear (only in the guise of The Jolt performing the Weller song “See Saw” – and (perversely, possibly) that is a good thing. It gives lesser known bands a chance to shine. Bands which (in my opinion (which may not count for much!) that should’ve been massive like The Truth or The Prisoners (a retrospective statement, as I only discovered them 3 or so years ago) to worthy contenders, maybe not so vividly remembered names like The Combine, Untamed Youth, Beggar and The Vandells. The mid-80s Mod Revival-Revival is also represented in the shape of The Moment, Makin’ Time and the Gents.

BBC 6 Music have repeated this documentary over the last couple of days. Just 2 episodes at 30 minutes each but well worth a listen if you like your blues and gospel. http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b038bt1s
One of my favourite Youtube videos is of her performing on Chorlton railway station in Manchester back in 1964 – must have been a great gig to have attended

What does it sound like?:
If you had a really, really good imagination, this 10 part series from Amazon Prime looks and sounds exactly as if it would if you read the Michael Connelly books and had your mind project what you saw in your head onto the screen. Titus Welliver nails the Harry Bosch role. A couple of the stars of The Wire are great in it. The story is largely that of City Of Bones, one of the best early Bosch books, but updated. I’ve read all the books and can assure you this is a superb adaptation, done with Michael Connelly’s input and blessing. TV doesn’t get much better than this.
What does it all *mean*?
It means I’ll have to read the books again. And that Amazon Prime is worth getting.
