That’s great to see. Funnily enough I’m on a bit of a Deep Purple journey again, after watching the wonderful Rockonteurs podcast on YouTube with Ian Gillan and Ian Paice. What a great interview it was, and well worth a watch. I played Made in Japan the other night, the first time in years. Wow, that band were on form for those concerts. Loud, powerful rock, with tunes and riffs to die for. It’s great to see that they’re still rocking, even as they’re in, or nearly in their 80s.
How has Richie kept his luxuriant shiny curls while the rest of the band have straggly grey thatches, I wonder?

My friend, Dougie White, was vocalist with the 1993/1997 incarnation of Rainbow. The band produced Stranger In Us All in 1995. During the time of his Rainbow adventure, I kept in touch with Dougie (he was not happy that the masters decided he was to be called ‘Doogie’). We corresponded by air mail letter as he travelled the world. One of Dougie’s letters was sent from New York. During the making of SIUA, the band were residing in what was described as a chateau in the Catskills. Dougie described the scene saying that the band members were relaxing by the pool twiddling their fingers. Ritchie had been in an argument with his good lady, Candice. She stormed out of their room and had thrown something black, luxuriant and curly into the pool. Ritchie stayed in his room.
This is surely a contender for Afterword Comment of the Year (Heavy Rock Category).
Yes, it’s fun to mock but personally I prefer my pop gods with jet black hair or elaborate syrups over the greying/balding alternative.
Angus Young still hasn’t finished school and that’s how it should be..
Gillan’s got those old man skinny legs. I mean, he would have.
Remarkably good nick for a voice that has put out some ear piercing screams for many a year.

Is Blackmore’s Night still active? I know it’s not exactly Purple but I would have thought that it would keep his fingers moving?

What’s the problem with his playing? (I’m deaf and curious.)
from what I saw Gary it lacked fluidity. Not particularly long or flashy.
You’d expect to come about and shred just to show em all. He looked totally out of sorts.
Thanks, Junior. That’s a shame. I used to be a big fan, though I was always much more a fan of the Blackmore, Dio, Powell Rainbow than I ever was of Purple.

Yeah – Ian Paice’s drumming sounds incredibly solid for a 78-year-old.
Ian Paice. I maintain that he and Brian Downey of Thin Lizzy were the two finest drummers of the ‘70’s and since.
Ginger Baker and John Bonham didn’t have the same swing to them. Keith Moon’s endless flailing around the kit did little, I thought.
So, Ian Paice then. Check him out on any version of ‘You Fool No One’.
I agree with your first statement. Oh, yes. I don’t much go for drum solos, but Brian Downey played the best live drum solo I’ve ever seen, on the Johnny the Fox tour. Short and to the point.
But I don’t agree that Bonham couldn’t swing.
I do. Trampled Underfoot is meant to be funky. If Brian Downey were the drummer it would have been.
He could swing at times – some of the early live footage demonstrates that.
Great example plus I can never hear enough of the intro to Fireball.
Ginger Baker played in Fela’s band. But he couldn’t swing?
That crossed my mind, too…
He’s got great technique. Dave Gilmour was talking about working with Steve Gadd – he said he barely seems to use any power but the sound he produces is immense. None of this arms flailing business.

Depends how many tickets you bought, and how far he’s prepared to travel, I suppose.
