Our Native Daughters – Slave Driver
I heard Our Native Daughters for the first time last week, bought the album and cant stop playing it.
Easily my album of the year but too late to appear on my list.
Even though Little Gary is still awol I really have no objection to changing anybody’s list as we go along.
It is a superlative album inexplicably missing from most end of year lists. Do the right thing, @SteveT, and adjust your list while you can.
From last week. The Kit giving this old Roxette hit an alt-country feel in honour of the late, great Marie Fredriksson.
Even the mighty Soderbergs can’t rescue that horrendous, overblown piece of nonsense.

I don’t like covers so much. A lot of the time the performance plus production is so much of what makes a great recording. Often songs in rock music aren’t so special when you strip them back. It’s better when they are done live though. This I watched recently. Her voice is great on it. It’s a really nice version of So Long Marianne by Courtney Barnett:
My fave was E.S.P. by Buzzcocks performed live at the Portland Arms by Cambridge “psychedelic garage rock trio” Moonstrips. The guitar riff was played by the saxophonist. How he didn’t pass out, I don’t know.
Also Bowie’s Let’s Dance performed by Blossoms at the Reading Festival. A pretty straight cover, the youngsters in the crowd (i.e. most of them) didn’t know the provenence and just loved the song. This might be on the telly.
I think Aldous did a magnificent job on this Gerry Rafferty song.

The “Tiny Changes” album of covers of the songs on “The Midnight Organ Fight” by Frightened Rabbit in tribute to the late Scott Hutchison is full of good stuff.
This is the Twilight Sad doing “Floating In The Forth”. They also regularly do “Keep Yourself Warm” towards the end of their live shows.
