Oh boy that took a few hours but I enjoyed doing it, as I`ve stated before I love lists, I apologise for the time taken but bla blab la.
It was looking like P.S.B. was going to win easily at one stage, they led by 3 points with 75% of the votes counted, however Sufjan Stevens came through and will cause some consternation in some parts (@henpetsgi ; )) ). The genre that stands out in this poll is `Americana`, but what is `Americana`, because these days it seems to cover many types of American music. I think special mentions must go to Richard Hawley, The Unthanks and Steven Wilson, I personally love those three. I wonder how long P.S.B. can go on, their music is original, both albums & EP are very good but I wonder what direction they can now go.
Enough of my wittering over to you…
P.S. Any mistakes are intended so please concentrate on the music.
Woohoo, g’wan Sufjan!
Thanks for compiling it all.
PSB are moving forward in time with a concept album about the 3-Day Week. Tracks include “Send in ACAS”, “Beer and Sandwiches” and “Who Governs?”
Ha, love it Moocher, the Thatcher concept album should be a good `un, Arthur will turn in his grave.
The working title is Comfortably NUM.
Well played!
First – huge thanks not only for setting up the poll but also presenting the results in such an entertaining manner.
Second – have you all gone stark raving mad????
good work, @andyourbirdcansing.
Now – who’s doing the playlist?
Great job, Baron. Well done. The outcome is a travesty. To Pimp A Butterfly is clearly the album of 2015. Perhaps, you should have used the formula one scoring for a little more…erm…nuance?
I fear that using the Formula One scoring system (obviously a far more logical method) would, given the number of completely deranged people who apparently placed C& l at No1 on their list, would only lead to the same bloody result.
I feel I should post more samples of those preposterous lyrics but perhaps a few days of dignified silence would be a wiser option.
Thank you for doing this. M
A great list. You’ve all done very well.
Sterling work butty.
Ganglesprocket voted for the Unthanks 10 times – have you counted all 10 votes? I ask because it might just be a way of knocking Carrie and Lowell off the top spot.
How long did it take you to do that little lot? Can tell your missus is away.
sprocket only got one vote, he could have used one of those he wasted to vote for U2, democracy? Pah.
It took a lot longer than I thought it would Steve, but a lot of that is down to my keyboard proficiency or lack off. I LVG is f*****g losing it, my application is in.
Thanks for your sterling effort buddy!
Top top job Birdster. Clearly my tastes are common – one of those who didn’t have a unique choice. Knew I should have voted for Bella Hardy…
I have the top 2. Yet to listen to Sufjan as I’m concerned it may be a bit too much given my Mum is advanced in years.
If PBS is the second best album of 2015, then I can only surmise it’s been a shockingly poor year. It’s pleasant enough, with one standout track. I’ve rarely felt the need to listen to it.
I’m going forward to the past with deramdaze is my conclusion.
I followed DD’s advice yesterday and listened to Cliff’s early rock n roll songs. When I got to Willie And The Hand Jive I suddenly remembered something I’d rather do (and which, to be frank, I’ve never tried with Cliff’s voice in the background)….
Great work @andyourbirdcansing. Really appreciate he effort.
Shock, horror more agreement with ianess!! PSB are okayish but are they anything more than a novelty act? There must be a limit to what else they can do in that format of theirs.
It is a novelty, but what a novelty.
I’m currently ploughing my way through Neal Stephenson’s glorious Seveneves, and PSB are providing an extraordinarily apt soundtrack.
`Neal Stevenson`s “glorious” Seveneves`, I`ve been thinking about this book for a while now and you @bingolittle have decided for me. Book duly ordered. Any naysayers, I don`t want to know ; ))
I’m really enjoying it so far! Hope it hits the spot for you too.
I’ve just realised I’ve got one of the albums on the list, so perhaps I’m not hopelessly out of touch after all.
A few weeks ago someone gave me a burn of Ryley Walker – Primrose Green saying, “you may like this, it sounds like John Martyn”.
It started off sounding like Tim Buckley, but I could hear the John Martyn influence as well.
It was OK. But I’ll probably never play it again
I bought about 10 new release albums last year, and I’m pretty sure they’re all represented here, so I’m in the right place 🙂
This is as solid a ‘best of’ list as any out there in media and dare I say a little more adventurous than most – agree that its weighted towards Americana but then again to be expected on this site. I thought the 2nd and 3rd spots were very surprising – only just heard the PBS album and agree it is rather fab.
Well done AYBCS
Thanks for all that work. I’ll buy you a pint should you perchance be at a London Mingle (as yet, none planned).
Five of mine get the solitary single vote. Liz Longley, Dean Owens and Florence & the Machine (is there a band less loved around here apart from U2) I expected, but Shelby Lynne!!! Rosbif where were you? SteveT how could you not?
Well I like U2 (f*** off sprocket in a nice way) and what I have heard of F&TM I do not dislike. Might take a punt.
Carl, I have a small confession to make. I had Shelby Lynne down on my wanted list before release and then completely forgot about it. Your list jogged my memory and rectified my mistake a couple of weeks ago. Its very good but haven’t listened enough yet to put it up there with her best. Couple of tracks where she has that smouldering voice that I really love.
Looking forward to the new Lucinda.
Getting back to the list I am really surprised that Carrie and Lowell and Julia Houlter ranked so highly – both are okay but albums of the year? Nowhere near.
As they say – no accounting for folk.
I too admit I missed the Shelby release. I think we should demand a recount???
You can count `em yourself my friend.
That’s four votes for Shelby, taking her up to joint 29th (I’m being very presumptuous here casting one of Rosbif’s votes on her behalf).
I’m also surprised that Shawn Colvin only had my vote, because I’d gained the impression over the years that she too had a few fans, unless they never followed on from any of the old places.
Have a listen to her playing Springsteen’s Tougher Than The Rest.
I’d have chosen her version of Robert Earl Keen’s Not A Drop Of Rain, but there isn’t a decent version on YouTube.
mmm. tempted. One of my favourite Bruce songs. Already have her other covers album which gets played reasonably regularly. Didn’t think I needed another one but not sure now.
I got the album for Christmas, too late to vote otherwise it would have been in my top 5.
Sufjan Stevens? Seriously?
No surprise that five of mine were in the 115th spot as all but one of them are Swedish (and the fifth one Romanian…) 🙂
I’ve no idea who Public Service Broadcasting are. And, with a lame name like that, I don’t want to know…
That’s a shame. They’re well regarded here generally.
If people were put off by names, Ikea would be out of business. Here they are:
That was awful. I lasted one minute of the first one, and as soon as I heard them start talking on the second one I bailed.
Sorry, not for me!
Ha ha it would be a dull world if we all liked exactly the same stuff.
PSB is an interesting one, as they appear to have benefitted from andyourbirdcansing’s flat voting system (*emphatically not complaining, Sir – it’s your poll and counting must have been enough of a ‘mare without weighted votes*). I’d guess very few of the 90 had PSB as their favourite album, but they found a place on many people’s list. In contrast Kendrick is Tiggs’ album of the century but wouldn’t make the next poster’s top 1,000,000..
It would probably have won, who knows? The poll was really taken for a reflection of musical tastes of The Massive which I think it did successfully Mr. @sewerrobot.
Exactly so. Vive Le Difference!
I’ve been taking a tour of other people’s favourites and, by and large, my head’s been turned more by those idiosyncratic single vote winners than the big hitters which (again, by and large) are on all of the end of year lists anyway…
I agree and will be taking a punt without listening, because that`s how I like it, on a few of the one vote wonders.
You rang?
Well I was surprised that 6 of mine were in that last spot. I know when I go to work I’m treated as an outcast musically (in a nice way) but I thought round here I was among friends! The even odder thing is that, apart from those 6, most of the rest were in the top 20 so there must be the common ground I took as read.
Them’s the vagaries 🙂
You’re not along though, I had 5 that nobody else voted for but also 2 in the top 20.
Either way, it’s interesting reading, so another thanks to @andyourbirdcansing for the effort.
Now can you put them into genres, I need to know the top folk, jazz, world etc. Shouldn’t be much effort. Get to it, you know you want to. Just the simple ones, no need to go into @Poppysucceeds or @KidDynamite territory with post-grime urban shoegazey thrump and all that malarkey.
Off, Fuck – rearrange into well known phrase or saying @retropath2 you silly old coot ; ))
O, I say!!
I knew those @s wouldn’t bloody work…..
I’m rather surprised that the Joe Jackson album only got 2 votes.
Annoyingly, I love the FFS album and forgot all about it when I added my top 10. Would have made the overall top 10 but for that, which it deserves. Sorry FFS
FFS! @ainsley
Fantastic work Birdman!
The very least I can do is create a Spotify playlist for those who want to investigate further.
72 songs so far and I’ve only got to the letter G in the first list.
Some very pleasant surprises so far. A band’s name can be very misleading.
You really are a glutton for punishment KFD! That’s an awful lot of work for one hombre. It occurs to me (too late, as usual) that if we’re all still here next year we could set up a collaborative playlist and people could chip in a song from the albums as they vote for them…
Or would that spoil your playlisting fun?
Well done to the compiler and the Spotify guy. Listening now. Mind you, the first track is a stinker….
Great work Kfd, I`ll be giving it a listen when my John Lee Hooker LP comes to an end.
