Bennett,Wilson Poole brought a touch of sunshine to a damp and chilly Crawley last night. I, and I’m sure many others (from the remarks I heard whilst leaving) let the venue feeling uplifted by a set of wonderful songs beautifully sung and backed with fine guitar playing (especially Tony Poole’s exquisite jangly 12 string Rickenbacker).
The band performed the whole of their debut album plus tracks from their previous bands Grand Drive,Dreaming Spires and Starry Eyed and Laughing. They also previewed a couple of tracks which have been cut for their eagerly awaited follow up album due later this year. They finished with a rousing version of the Wilburys “Handle with care”.
It’s only January but I may well have seen the best gig of the year

What absolute joy can be gained from listening to accomplished musicians doing something they love and at which they shine. I floated out of the venue

I thought for a moment that you had visited your local leisure centre which was bnamed in honour of both the Good Vibrations Hitmaker and Lady Gaga’s crooner pal.
Glad to hear that it is instead a rather talented music combo. They sound very promising.
I’m gutted they won’t be at The Ramblin Roots Festival. The album was my Americana Album of last year and the critics thought so too. Great band.

I saw them play a short (20 mins) set at Daylight music last year. Although not my usual choice of music style, I found them very impressive. Jangly guitar stuff with 3 equally good vocalists and well-written songs. Haven’t got around to giving their album a play yet.
Loved SE&L way back then and liked the sound of this, hoovering up the album in my january HMV sales blitz of other peoples faves I had missed in the year. Glad they tour as, with respect, unlikely to be in enormodomes, more yer local arts centres and bijou venues similar.
Yeah.
Can’t see them ever being an enormodome band. Almost certainly a good thing. A more intimate setting would always suit them better.
I’d go see them again if I discovered they were playing within a reasonable distance.
Love this band but slightly sad it might signal the end of Danny and the Champions of the World who I absolutely love both recorded and live.
Read an interview with Danny Wilson at the start of December and he was talking about his plans for the next Champs album – as well as plans for a second Bennett, Wilson, Poole opus.

Their debut album is superb. I criminally left it out of my 20 favourite albums of 2018, it belonged in my top three. I can’t resist that jingle-jangle guitar, S, E & L where a great band, sadly under-appreciated by most civilians just as B W P will be. Looking forward to the follow-up album and @SteveT a new D & T C O T W album. Should put a smile on your wrinkled fizzog (SteveT that is).

Speaking as someone who has got everything recorded by Grand Drive and the “Champs” not to mention The Dreaming Spires and Goldrush, I have to confess I was unaware of this album until I saw this thread. So big thanks to Johnny 99. A lovely surprise.
