Extraordinary batting, but South African bowling seemed to be rubbish. Pleased as I am for Stokes, am more pleased for Bairstow. His mum was there and she must have been feeling emotional and very proud. It’s on days like today though that I miss not having tv coverage on terrestial tv. Well done ECB.
Aggers has just interviewed Jonny’s mum and sister and a wonderful listen it was too, as has all of TMS so far today. Interesting too how Geoffrey has been a great support to the family since David died. Not a side of Geoffrey you imagine exists given some of the things he says on the radio (Michael Yardy).
I saw Jonny Bairstow’s first class debut knock at Headingley in a championship match. He scored 80-odd, and even then it was clear that he would be a special player. I also spent much of my teens and twenties watching his old man (in the really bad days of Yorkshire cricket), so Jonny’s success really is an enormous pleasure for me.
I can’t think of too many ginger blokes I played with, but whoever they may have been we certainly never put on nearly 400.
Mrs bobness commented yesterday, while trying not to watch the game at my Mum’s, that BS and GG look basically the same, bar the beard length.
I thought that was a bit ging-ist myself. I’m with Tim Minchin on this one (despite being in my “winter plumage” shall we say…).
Unfortunately, Amla appears to have batted himself back into form. Even that famous Lancastrian du Plessis has got some runs, which shows how flat the pitch is.
Not ‘arf!
Jonny Bairstow….ditto!

Agree with that Dodger. Poor show that we can’t even get highlights on a series like this.

Just mute the volume and listen to TMS.
Not always in synch but in a good way…you see a wicket before they comment onit.

Ginger carnage.
Ginger carnage in Cape Town.
Best partnership ever by 2 ginger blokes.

Ben Stokes isn’t bad either (for a Mackem)…
Just a pity they couldn’t have added another 13 and taken the all-time England partnership record off 2 public school toffs (May and Cowdrey).
Jonny Bairstow went to St Peter’s, York.
Alright, 2 southern, extreme Establishment public school toffs. Nobody could ever accuse Jonny B of being a toff!

As I said earlier, worth a listen.

That was lovely.
Very cool. I get fonder of cricket as I get older and this makes me happy.
It is a place of solace and comfort.
Great innings by both players – now all we need to do is bowl SA out twice on this pitch! Hope we don’t live to regret that dropped catch off AB.
Early days but a draw seems likely.
Looking more likely as the day goes on. We need to cling on to every chance we get.
